Jinshi uses charm as part of his job, as explained in his conversation with Gaoshun. In theory he can't even do anything because the concubines are linked to the emperor and he is, as far as we know, a eunuch.
@@MinscS2 I also see him using charm as a way to get the women in the palace to cooperate more easily when a problem arises. It would be easy for him to impose authority through fear, but he prefers to use lighter means.
Maomao is actually already of age. In the novel she’s described as very malnourished and thin that’s why she’s drawn small. Also there’s another manga that actually draws her taller.
@@SupremeCommanderBaiser It's not a spoiler though. That's just a fact of the story. There's no big reveal. It's literally how she is described in the novel when the author presented her character.
@@SupremeCommanderBaiser It's not a spoiler though. LNs *need* to describe the characters with as much detail as possible because it's a literal novel 😂
This is probably one of the best voice acting performances for a character that I've seen and heard so far. Maomao has been given a so damn authentic characterization which complements her voice so well, that I instantly fell in love with this anime.
Of COURSE Yuuki Aoi san is the goat. ❤ If you need a female lead who blows everyone away with her acting you either cast Hanazawa san or Yuuki san end of story. :)
No one is going to agree because of the unrealistic hate dubs get But even the dub is amazingly good as well (Not saying better than sub but easily on par with it)
What Hongniang (head lady-in-waiting for Lady Gyoukuyou) did was intentionally break the expensive vase after hearing how Mao Mao was kidnapped and her wages are going to her kidnappers. The cost of the vase is taken from the earnings she already made and her future earnings so basically the kidnappers are getting nothing now. Also, Mao Mao's poison tasting hazard pay is not part of her regular salary so the kidnappers don't get any of that. So, basically Mao Mao is now getting what she was earning beforehand and the kidnappers are getting nothing.
14:27 Carlie's pronounciation was top notch! Totally understand Carlie's reaction towards Jinshi's "harass-y vibes" 😅 but Ange does have a good read on Jinshi's character this early on, using "seduction" to have influence in the rear palace _(edited out a comment. in hindsight best to let them digest the characters as intended by the show!)_
Concubine Gyokuyou is on the same level as the other 3 high ranking concubines... Right now she has a better position of them all, because she's the only one with the emperor's child.... until one of the other concubines births a boy... If Lady Lihua's baby boy hadn't died, she would have been in a better position among them all at that point.
Not the "Sherlock Holmes with a side of Sexual Harassment" 💀! I believe Toho are the distributors (so for example JJK was animated by Mappa but distributed by Toho?), and Oriental Light and Magic (OLM) are the animators. OLM has done works such as Pokémon, Summertime Rendering, Komi Can't Communicate!
Just want to officially put it out there: Maomao is canonically 17, so she is considered of-age, even by the standards of most countries today. Jinshi, though he comes across much older, is only by a year or two.
A job as a poison/food taster is scary job. It is because this is Mao Mao so it appears to be less scary esp she's pretty much trained against poisons, also esp because Mao Mao eats the food deliciously so it looks great as she got to taste tasty food first. The tasters without poison tolerance will be scared as they never know which food with poison or what kind of poison. They may gradually learn a bit to see or smell if there is poison but it won't be like Mao Mao. If somehow the food passed the taster and the higher up who eats it got poisoned, the taster will be the first to blame. I just watched and read some historical stories (west, east) or fictional stories with historical settings that have food taster.
So Mao Mao is 17 and that is the age of a legal adult in this time period. Now with Jinshi, as you could see from this episode, women adore him and it appears that he has never had a problem charming a women before until Mao Mao. I'm hoping as more episodes pass you'll enjoy the dynamic between these two characters.
Maomao's name is written as 猫猫 in Chinese, where '猫' means 'cat' in both Chinese (Mao) and Japanese (Neko). Hence, those cat-like reactions are quite fitting.
The more I watch the show, the more I like Xiaolan, Maomao's laundry lady friend. She's just so adorable when she rants, and she is the best source of gossip in the whole palace, and we need to protect her just as much as Maomao.
Carlie needs to be more relax and reasonable with Jinshi. He is not a creep. He is just someone who uses his looks and flirtatious character to his advantage
Great stuff, I have watched a few of your reaction videos on anime. Really fun stuff. I especially enjoy the commentary, ... trying to figure things out, surprised at development, and appreciation of things I have missed, really adds a lot to the video. With a lot of youtube couples, the male talks over the female and you almost never see a womans opinion. I doubt anyone talks over Carlie, and it is nice hearing a conversation about an anime. Instead of a single opinion. I sub and thumbs up.
I like jinshi but I like it even more that the Female character in this anime is unbothered and doesnt blush every 5 seconds she interacts with the male lead... I love maomao
Call her MaoMao please! As someone whose real name is hard for people to say, I appreciate it when people take the time to learn it. Names sometime carry meaning with them that get lost when people don't want to learn how to say it.
Back then it was luxury. But cacao is stimulant, we just eat it too much to have effect on us. Its same with alcohol. When you drink often, you wont get drunk from one glass. But when someone gulps it for the first time, he gets drunk.
Im very anti spoiler so no hints from me. I loved this show, and im glad you are watching it. I must admit im jealous of the way the 2 of you can discuss episodes and theorycraft after each episode. A couple of my coworkers watch anime, but its super rare we watch the same shows and are on the same episode making watercooler discussion impossible.
I’m guessing they’ve only spoken english their whole lives so their vocal chords aren’t trained to pronounce certain sounds. The same goes for people who grew up only speaking Asian languages. There are certain words they’re incapable of pronouncing accurately without a lot of practice because that sound simply doesn’t exist in their language. I’m good as long as they keep making the effort to try.
@@befuddledrai I mean I don't care either, it's just funny how it's every new anime for a while in the beginning they make guesses how to pronounce the names rather than just listen to how they say it in the show - I've only ever spoken Danish and English, but it's not hard to replicate a name even from other languages than that, remembering it might be another thing tho :P
So um... I wanna remind you guys please refrain from OVER explaining for Carly and Ange... As the anime progresses... spoilers and over explaining are the same and other people have been in this position. I just wanna say it right now before the story move further. Even for the patreons too. Let's let our reactors roam the comment section freely and interactively without being scared of spoilers.
