You dont have to take the column shield off Just turn the steering wheel.

Do you need to disconnect the battery first ? Could the airbag go off if you don’t disconnect the battery ?

Why did u remove the column cover? U do realize by turning wheel hard left and then hard right you can access the flat screw tabs to remove the airbag then rest is straight forward.
