France arrived in North America with dreams of wealth and empire. La Salle had explored and claimed the Mississippi Valley but, yet to make the vast region their own, the French had to occupy it. With shiploads of soldiers and settlers, they built forts by the score in upper and lower Louisiana. And when the French invaded Chickasaw territory, the Chickasaws were ready, ably defending their homes.
