Hi Cali. I have 2 week old Black Eyed Susans in my flower bed. I have tried Neem oil but I still have bugs. Will the bug and slugs killer stop holes in my leaves?
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 4 месяца назад
Not knowing exactly what's causing the holes it's hard to say. I would think it's most likely earwigs, pill bugs, slugs and snails, which Monterey's Sluggo Plus is what I would suggest trying. Here is the link: amzn.to/4e07dun

I have eraser type holes in the middle of my basil and pepper leaves and cannot see any bugs or critters eating them! What is doing this and how to stop them?
@CaliKim29

Hi! This is a bummer and hard for me to say exactly what they could be! Whatever they are, I'm thinking they are small...and hard to see (because you haven't seen them). Here are some suggestions on what they could be... Flea Beetles-Small, shiny beetles that jump like fleas and most active during the day. Slugs and Snails:These pests feed at night and leave irregular holes with smooth edges.Look for slime trails or check the plants at night with a flashlight.Handpick them at night, use beer traps, or sprinkle crushed eggshells or diatomaceous earth around plants to deter them. I did the beer traps and they worked. Cabbage Loopers-Look for caterpillar droppings (frass) or check the undersides of leaves. Leaf Miners-Larvae of certain flies that tunnel inside the leaves, creating trails or blotches. Look for serpentine trails or blotchy patches within the leaves. This is no doubt frustrating. Keep after them and keep me posted - CaliKim

Pest pressure increased radically in the last several years, due to climate change giving us warmer winters, not killing off the bugs. Love the idea of clipping tulle to the beds. Additional benefit - you can pick fun colors of tulle! Those in-ground bugs aggravate me. I started using Sluggo Plus, which worked! I bought Captain Jacks, the dust formula, haven't used it yet. I'll have to get a bottle of the liquid too. I really like how great your terraces look all cleaned out and growing some grass for the time being. Whole yard has great changes, new methods, fun expectations!

I love Tulle as an insect barrier. For zucchini growers, if you don't mind hand pollinating - it's SUPER effective against the dreaded vine borer moth if you get it on soon enough. Big fan of Captain Jack's. Thank you - great vid.

Kind of an Occam's razor situation, don't you think? When you planted your plant --- did you add worm castings or fish fertilizer? Your plants have need those additional ingredients to get a strong jump start....frustrating nonetheless, I know. I am sorry to hear --- but let's jump back in and keep moving! CaliKim

We’ve been in a drought here in MD. We are nearly 6” below average for rain this year already. Today we finally had an inch of rain but still it isn’t enough. There was also a tornado not too far away from me that took down some trees and fences. I’m just glad we finally got some rain because we kept having wildfires. Someone send us more rain! Lol.

Hi Jack, crazy weather - usually you have so much rain and we're in a drought here in Cali. This year it's reversed, I'll send some rain your way! Stay safe, hope those tornadoes and fires stay far away from you family and your garden!
@jackrudden5970
@jackrudden5970 Год назад
@@CaliKim29 thank you! We’re actually are expecting several inches of rain in the next 7 days. 2-4” between Friday and Monday so that will be a huge help with the drought and should result in a growth spurt for the garden.

do earwigs also chew on plant leaves? I've put slug and snail bait after our california rains when it started to get sunny thinking slugs might be coming out... but I see some earwigs moving around when I am out digging holes and trying to plant things in my soil. They've completely chewed up a couple yarrow seedlings and started to munch on some hollyhock seedlings that I just planted out. :(

Should I pick off leaves that have holes in them?
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 4 месяца назад
Hi Andrea, It depends on the extent of damage and the type of plant. If there are just a few leaves with small holes, it's generally not necessary to remove them, especially if the plant is otherwise healthy. But, if the damage is extensive or if it's caused by pests or disease, it might be a good idea to remove affected leaves to prevent further spread. Regularly inspecting your plants for signs of pests or disease and addressing any issues promptly can help maintain their health. CaliKim

Hey Kimba, been too long, I hope CG and your son are doing great! I am back to growing after an injury last year. I chose to "up-pot" all my 160+ seedlings since we had so much cool, gloomy weather in our area. I'm putting to earth this weekend. Good to be back and I'll see you guys on your livestreams. God Bless my friends. Tommy

only problem with putting netting on your plants is that bees can’t get into pollinate or other pollinators
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 4 месяца назад
You bring up a legitimate concern...in further detail, what I do, is that I am constantly, removing the netting for early am/evening, etc. placing the netting back on, etc....Thanks for pointing that out -

@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 Год назад
Hi Tatyana, no need to rinse off - leave on the plant so when the insects chew on the leaves they get a nice mouthful of the insecticide. DeadBug Brew can be sprayed up to 1 day prior to harvest. Good luck getting rid of the creepy crawlies!

Does it work for SCALE ?
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 Год назад
Hi Emily - Scale super annoying and tough to get rid of, as you have to catch it at the crawling stage before the insects become immobile and attach themselves to the plant. I'd use Bonide's Insecticidal Super Soap, and spray as soon as you see them for best results. Check out these links: bonide.com/insect/scale-insects/, amzn.to/3AvumSK. Hope this helps!
