Referring to Eartha Kitt and not naming her or knowing what an absolute GET she was for this movie hurts my heart 😂😅 a true ICON!! Makes me want yall to do Emperors New Groove because her work as Yzma is some of my favorite
For the record, Stanely knew that there was treasure buried where Kissing Kate's lip stick was found because he grew up hearing stories about Kissing Kate Barlow, famous thief. She is a local legend. His grandfather is even telling the story of how she robbed his great grandfather, Stanely Yelnats the first, earlier in the movie when his family is sitting around the dinner table. That is why Stanely's name is on the treasure box. This movie has literally no plot holes.
holes will always hold a special place in my heart because madam zeroni ( eartha kitt ) is my cousin! then getting to hear my grandmas story’s about how they grew up together on the farm and what not. im just like damn that’s my cousin???? on the disney channel???
Your cousin????? She was the coolest, most badass woman to ever live! The original Catwoman! A genuine chanteuse who was so fascinating and magnetic that the US govt got paranoid she was up to something. That's so wild, I'm jealous haha. I literally have a framed picture of Eartha Kitt with a black cat in my kitchen.
The like random montage of Miss Katherine turning into Kissing Kate goes so hard with that song "done a lot things that I'm not so proud of.... I WILL SURVIVE " lmao this movie has everything
In fifth grade, we had a day of celebration where the fifth graders got to spend all day outside and have a BBQ for lunch. To top it all off, we got to watch Holes in the library. It truly was the cherry on top of an amazing day.
I was an English teacher (WAS) and I read the book to my students and then we watched the movie, and Zero spelling “d-i-g” after he hits him with the shovel and I wish I could bottle that reaction because it was so amazing to show it to them 😭
My 4th grade teacher read Holes to my class. She read it every year, but it also happened to be the school year the movie would come out. Loved the book, loved the movie. Now I've been a teacher for 8 school years, and for 6 of those I've taught 4th grade. I read Holes every year as the first read-aloud I do during our 20 min snack time. Just for fun, not do do academic work on. Some of the kids kind of act like being read to is babyish at first. Then, they get into the story, and they're excited every day to hear what happens next. And let me tell you, watching their faces when a plot twist or a pivotal moment happens is just the best. Then we watch the movie for their Fun Friday period, the last 30 min of the school week, until we finish it. Quite a few of my past students told me reading and watching Holes are a core memory for them. Makes my heart so happy. I also hope it helps some of them see you can read just for fun, not just for school work.
33:27 Fun Fact, David Bowie did not have heterochromia. It only looked like he did, because one of his pupils was bigger than the other. This condition is called anisocoria.
Not knowing Eartha MFing Kitts name is wild to me. Also, it wasnt a 5x5 hole. It was as long and wide as the size of their shovel. Thats why Zero always chose the smallest shovel and was done the fastest. Thats why Zig Zag, the spazzy guys says "smaller shovel, smaller hole". Manget is our latin king
Marion is absolutely an (old-fashioned) male name. It was my great-grandfather's name. It used to be that "Marion" (with an o) was the male name and "Marian" (with an a) was the female name. Movie star John Wayne's real name was Marion Morrison.
My fifth grade teacher read us holes and I loved it. And when I saw the commercial/trailer for it on Disney channel I literally screamed and ran around my room because I was so excited. Lol I was 12
I was recently on a 2.2hr flight. Kid in the middle seat in the row in front of me was watching Holes in the in-flight entertainment app. And it occurred to me that this might have been the kids' first time watching the movie.
I actually didn't see the plot twist coming with Eartha Kitt and Zero as a kid so my mind was blown!!!! I loooved this movie so much, a true classic, so many layers ... onions!
Not Kelsey's and Jared's energies fusing into one in this episode 😂 Zach seems so much calmer next to this duo. What a great episode! Such a treasure of a book/movie.
Why do I need book club with Kelsey? I feel it would be the best of book-tok (romance genre or adjacent assumed) but with an actual comedian?! With someone to explain what they got wrong with the parts of the books that go into bd sm/dom/sub?! That's a Patreon perk I'd sign up for.
Holes is an iconic movie with incredible storytelling!! “Well that’s too damn bad!” and Sigourney Weaver serving 🔥 I can fix that 😭 I was thinking what grade the climb was too
So many things. This movie stayed on rotation in my household for at least a year. We read the book as a class if I remember correctly. The cast commentary on the dvd was so entertaining. Their cast chemistry was crazy. I had a massive crush on Khleo Thomas after this movie. So many good one liners. The song is burned in our millennial brands because Disney channel played it like every commercial break forever.
That's too damn bad has been one of my favorite sayings since Holes came out. Holes is my nephew's favorite movie and even at 23 and 20, they will still watch it with me 😅😅😅😅
I teach 6th grade ELA and I read this every year with my students (and Hatchet) and watching them freak out at every twist and reveal in Holes brings me so much joy
I can't even with how much they're squeeing over Holes!!!! it's one of my favourite movies ever. I was 37 when I saw the movie in 2007, and I don't remember the big deal about the book. It's one of few movies I've watched where I got to the end of and immediately watched it again. When Hector runs away after hitting Pendansky, and the Warden says to destroy all of Hector's paper work because "he was never here," to me, the justified nearly any punishment she was going to get. The thing with the judge is he is in cahoots with the Warden, Mr. Sir, and Pendansky. If some kid who is Black, or poor, or homeless comes before his bench, he knows he can send them to Camp Greenlake and no one will miss them. The absolute best part of the whole movie is when Stanley puts the valise in the trunk and the Warden begs him, "Stanley, won't you just open it? Just let me see what's inside, please." And he closes the trunk and says, "Secuse me?" Boom! Khelo Thomas is a gamer who won a Mortal Kombat 11 tournament dressed as Powerline from A Goofy Movie. "I can fix that" means the exact same thing as "As you wish." Yes, Zach!!!
My schools did the same dang thing - I had holes as required reading maybe 2 or 3 different times in different grades and then read it on my own just because I loved it somewhere in between all of those reads - and I’m from Massachusetts - maybe an east coast thing? (Also yep Hatchet was also required reading but I never did because the cover was so hideous I couldn’t bring myself to do it)
Born in Chicago IL. Holes was not required reading but it was in our teachers classroom library so I picked it up & loved it. The cool thing is Camp Green Lake really was a Girl Scout camp and it’s in Illinois. I visited it as a Brownie 😂😅 Hatchet was also not required reading but my 4th or 5th grade teacher chose it as a read aloud book to us for class story time. It blew our little minds. Class favorite for sure 👏
Was so excited when I saw Dulé Hill in Psych and then have a whole scene reference Holes in the episode “65 Million Years Off” and then in “The Santa Barbarian Candidate” when he says “I can fix that.”
Fun observation as a Disneyland cast member. After working oogie boogie bash last year, one of the top three most popular group costumes (as in an obscene amount of groups wore them) was holes just outfits. The hard core groups had the jugs too (I’m sure they would have done shovels too if it was allowed lol).
The first time I watched this movie in 3rd grade was the first time I was afraid to sleep in my own bed because of the spotted lizards. I also ate onions so they wouldn't want to bite me
I never google more frequently than when I'm listening to this podcast. So many references. Ever actor/director/sequel name/etc. I have to google them all >.
I am 28, and this book and movie are still my absolute favourites. It truly is perfection. I love Louis Sachar. ❤️ But also, Small Steps is not 39 pages, it's a whole book. More than 200 pages for sure.
I ratify 4th grade, and would read Holes to the kids every year. It was the only book that kept everyone invested, and so good for teaching twist plots, forshadowing and about racism. Then we got to watch the movie together. So fun!
I have seen holes over a hundred times. It's one of my favorite movies but I was today years old when you said "zero" and "zeroni". I never made that connection. I never knew why he was named zero
In NYC Public Schools Holes was required in high school which was weird. I had read it the summer between 8th grade and high school. I didn't have to read it in high school because most of my English classes were Honors level.
I love and respect that Try Guys did a Palestine Relief Special. It was great to show support if they also donated themselves. HS and College kids do not have much funds--if any for charity.
I'm really saddened to hear that the Try Guys are haemorrhaging subscribers because of a charity event that helps orphaned children in a war-torn country.
I LOVE this podcast and have been here since the beginning and I love all the films you guys review and especially the amazing classic great vibe movies you’ve reviewed lately!!🤗🫶 I love the big conversations you guys have and I learn something new every video and I love that!! Subscribed forever🥰🫶💗✨
David Bowie actually didn’t have heterochromia! He had a blown pupil from a head injury in childhood. His irises were the same color but one pupil was much bigger than the other, creating that illusion
David bowie actually doesnt have different colored eyes, he had anisocoria- so one pupil was just much larger than the other, and since he had very light eyes it really contrasted w the darkness of his pupil to look like he had different colored eyes
