What a great time and great place to be a child. When it snowed on Thanksgiving and stayed till Easter. Nothing like winter in GR in the 70's. Sledding at Richmond Hill with all my friends from Kenowa Hills

I recognized the sledding hill at Richmond Park immediately! Back in the late 60s and early 70s sledded and skated several times there with friends from West Catholic HS, just a mile further up the hillside.

The filming missed the second consecutive years of major snow storms which happened in late January of 77 and 78. The 77 storms hit on a Wednesday night and shut everything down for 4 days. We had all day beer parties at the Ramblewood club house with barrels of beer picked up from the party store by snow mobiles. Those winters coaxed me into taking up downhill skiing. What a blast!

Nothing better than a winter in the 70's! I had a fellow worker and high school friend that had a small part in the movie pretty cool....best of times!!

I was one month away from my 1st birthday. It was great to see the American Seating plant. My dad worked there during the time this movie was being made. Thank you for posting.

I remember when Paul Schrader came to town to make the movie. We were all so excited! Our hometown boy returns home to make a movie about Grand Rapids! Little did we know that he had some grudges up his sleeve. We all flocked to his auditions for the movie he told us would be called "The Pilgrim", a nice story about a "Christian" family in Grand Rapids. Ha! He really made us look like a sleazy, hyper-religious, hick, podunk town, and the actual title of the movie ended up being "Hardcore". That he pulled it all off always made me laugh, still does!

That movie was good. I wonder what his grudges were... Sadly, sleazy, hyper-religious hick podunk town fits Grand Rapids sometimes. Nobody is totally flawless.

Oh, my gosh! The house shown at 27 seconds- I think that's the house I lived in during the early 90's. 🤯 955 Richmond St. The park shown looks like Richmond Park, which was right around the corner.

I always wondered what town was featured in this opening scene. I'd go crazy in an hour with all that snow! But I've known several Michiganders in my life, and they're fine people.

The snow was worst in 1977, I was 11 years old and my brother and I would go out and earn some money shoveling snow. The beginning of this clip brings back some really good memories of growing up in Grand Rapids.

Paul was a neighbor & schoolmate. i always felt it was a "prodigal daughter" themed film. loved the "TULIP" scene & credits at the end showing the character names using names of classmates. he also did a great "Bannaner" magazine spoof which pretty much ended his welcome in GR until he pulled off this movie. my parents walked out of the theater, but i make my kids watch it. i want them to know i would try to do what george c scott did.

This must have been filmed a while before 79 with the "Dime Store Block" still intact. Haunting to see a least a tiny amount of old GR on film like that.

Ah...the winter of 77-78...I had enough. I moved to San Diego by Labor Day. I knew there was comfortable climate somewhere in the states. I don't miss the snow at all.
