Reel 2
Continued - see record b.
Various shots of the ship's shop as the Mother and Father look at jewelry and the Son looks at a large decorated wooden box. Shot of the sun setting over the sea as we speed along on the ship.
M/S of the Mother and Daughter with another woman in an ironing room; they press their dresses and petticoats. M/Ss of the daughter having her hair done in a hairdressing salon on the ship. We learn from the commentary that it's her 17th birthday as we see the family (plus a new blond-haired boyfriend!) drinking champagne in the restaurant and giving her gifts: a string of pearls and the decorated box from the ship's shop (Son has left the price on the bottom of the box).
Various shots in the ship's ballroom; lots of couples dancing in evening wear; balloons are released from a net just below the ceiling and people struggle to burst them. Mother and Father walk out on deck in the moonlight (looks like day for night).
M/S of passengers coming down a steep gangway and onto a boat taking them to Dubrovnik, Jugoslavia (Yugoslavia); we get a good view of the bow of the Arcadia as the smaller boat pulls away. The family drive to the walled area of the town and look at a picturesque harbour. They explore various parts of the town including the Rectors Palace courtyard. Back on board the ship, we see people standing around and chatting; looking out towards land as we pass the Straits of Messina, between Italy and Sicily.
Commentator says "And so to the last jewel on our particular necklace: up the broad Tagus to the heart of Lisbon", as we see the Son taking photos as the rest of the family disembark. Various shots as the family look at the Jeronimo monastery, gardens and harbour of the city and eat at Estoril - Daughter has another new boyfriend for this excursion.
'Arcadia' neon light on the boat as we see a fancy dress party taking place on an open deck. The Daughter is with yet another boy and commentator says "There seem to have been plenty of young men among those twelve hundred and seventy-two". The couple seem to win the fancy dress contest - dressed as ancient Greeks in togas. M/S of the Daughter with a boy by the rail as the sun sets.
Mother and Father lying in the sun on pullman chairs on deck as the ship makes the return to Southampton. Daughter gives Father a gift of a small clock, then we see she has given the same to two of her young men. Mother and Father stroll along the deck. Commentator says "The spin of the coin gave the right decision... always they will be able to say 'I too have lived in Arcadia'". L/S of the liner on the water.
The End. Produced for Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company by Associated British Pathe. Film Editor - Cliff Boote; Sound Supervisor - George Newberry; Production Manager - Terry Hunter; Commentary written by Paul Jennings; Spoken by David de Keyser; Music composed by Douglas Gamley; Conducted by Muir Mathieson. Produced by Donald Taylor; Executive Producer - Terry Ashwood; Direction and Photography - Bernard Till.
Note: this print is badly scratched and the colour is quite red, but is lovely footage of a cruise holiday - good deck scenes!
