I use Hollister 8901 bag. It seems cheap but I use the stoma powder around my stoma and it lasts 4-5 days. I just wash it out a few times a day. I empty it and pour water into it and rub the bag together and I repeat several times until it's clean. I use the adapt liquid deodorizing oil drops afterwards. No problem with the smell then. I also cut the material off of my bag. I never had a fungal or yeast infection with mine. Also just fold the bottom up a few times and no rubbing. Previously I used convatec 2 piece units and don't like it. It's too stiff. It's thicker as far as bag and wafer. That caused like a heaviness and a pulling on skin around stoma. Hollister one piece seems cheap and it's very light weight. It doesn't ever leak, which I did have problems with when I used a 2 piece from convatec. I'm so much happier with Hollister 1 piece bag. The few issues with bottom of bag poking me is easily fixed and the material is easily cut off. They all have pros and cons. Hollister 8901 bag, is just my favorite so far. I tried 4-5 different types and came back to the 8901. Everyone is different though. Bless you for this education.

I am an ostomate for just onto 40 years. I was a Hollister user but have changed to the Coloplast products and find both the one piece system and the two piece system excellent! Changed over to the 2 piece a few months ago and fully satisfied. There Velcro system is absolutely secure. I had a few mishaps with the Hollister Velcro …. You really have to align it correctly and press firmly to close.

I started cutting the little thin, extra plastic flaps, at the very end of the opening off, following the line of the thick plastic of the opening, almost since day one. It's easy and quick. You are right, they are hard to clean and make it a little more difficult to open the closure to clean it.
@VeganOstomy
@VeganOstomy 2 года назад
This can work, but be cautious if you have liquid output as those flaps seem to help seal the outlet. But if you're cleaning the tail end properly then leaks from the outlet shouldn't be an issue 👍

@@VeganOstomy If you can get the last 2 folds of the Hollister closure clean and dry, inside and out, it won't leak liquid. Also, after swimming, or bathing, make sure the outside of the whole closure is dry, along with those last 2 folds, still both inside and out. If those 2 folds are wet, even with just water, inside or out, they will wick a little of the contents of the bag to the outside.

Me too! Hate the tiny floppy poopy plastic ends. Use heavy surgical scissors, sharp & cuts evenly - no edges that snag the TP while wiping. Do a box(10) at one time. handier.

I agree with you, the flange is great and my irritable skin liked it but the pouch is not so good. I'm trialling this product right now as I had severe skin irritation with coloplast flanges. I don't think the pouch is as good as coloplast for sure. I'm using the filter less pouch that Hollister sent me. Gas is always a problem. I'm also trialling the Convatec system. I have to use duo derm extra thin under the flange due to skin irritability. It is very secure but again the pouch material is very inferior. Too bad that pouches and flanges cannot be interchangeable. Thanks for this review.

Part 2 (. Unfortunately part one is below). Part of the reason that I'm not itching so bad is because of the soft fabric that is around the wafer that you don't particularly like. However it does work for me. Also as far as waterproofing the bag' Etsy is on an online store were lots of people make and sell handmade goods.. if you look up ostomy bag covers they actually have some that are waterproof, but you kind of have to look for them because they are normally in a big picture with like 40 or 50 designs and only one of them is waterproof. I'm getting ready to order a couple of them so I don't have to deal with waterproof tape, etc. I really appreciate your comments because I have not yet decided on which brand will be my go to brand as I've only been an Ostomate for only 4 weeks,, and we're still learning the tricks.

I currently use Hollister. After my surgery, I was sent home with Hollister but did call and get samples from all of the other major brands. For me specifically, the others leaked pretty quickly but I can go a full week between changes with these. I do use the filterless version of this bag (18112) because as awesome as those filters were, they still leaked on me since my output tends to be watery. My biggest complaint is that material. It starts to pill, like a sweater, within two days. Since I go 6-7 days between changes it looks pretty rough on the outside by then! I agree that it doesn't dry quickly either. I cover it with press and seal saran wrap and tape when I shower but sometimes the water still finds its way underneath.
@VeganOstomy
@VeganOstomy 9 лет назад
K Frazier Thanks for your comment! I find that if I use a pouch cover, the cloth fabric doesn't look too bad, but at 6-7 days, it won't perform miracles =) It's a shame that the filters don't work well for you, but I'm sure the first person to invent a filter that works with liquid output will win some kind of Nobel Prize - I'm sure of it!

Found Saran wrap leaks badly. Hard to get the cling to stick tightly. Lot's of sweat inside & makes it messy(hot shower). I have been using a 11x7 piece of heavy plastic. Secure it with 2 rows of silicone tape, on top & sides. One on bottom. Tape lasts for several showers. Sweat is an issue. I taped a few dessicant packs along the top of the wafer before sealing. Absorbs All the moisture & sweat. Eric is correct, Hollister pouches hate water.

I have been going thru tests with every product I can try before my surgery. I am hyper sensitive to a lot of adhesive even without latex. Many companies gave me a hard time asking for samples before having my ostomy but many helped when learning fully why I wanted to pre test. For some reason the hydrocolloid and my skin do not mix. Any wafer applied causes my skin to turn red and start itching in minutes. The Hollister care plus line won hands down for me with skin reactions. I have a good idea where my ileostomy stoma will be. I shaved the area days before so no irritation from that was there. Every sample from convatec tuned my skin red and started a rash. I tried barrier wipes and that didn't help. Coloplast was the same. Within minutes of putting on a hollister sample and could hardly feel it there unless I thought about it. I applied both one piece for a few days followed by a 2 piece. I saw one issue with both test. The adhesive on the outer edge started to peal on day 2. But the flange itself stayed stuck tight. This was over 2 days and one long hot shower with it on. Being on Medicare and able to get 20 bags a month a bag that holds up thru 2 days is perfect for me.
@VeganOstomy

Samples should be easier to get through a stoma nurse before your surgery, but most companies will be happy to send more samples after your surgery. I find that in the beginning, everything was kind of irritating to my skin, then my skin got used to the wafers and it's fine now. Stick with what's working and try not to overuse products (like adding more than you need to your routine). 20 bags a day should be no problem once you've got a reliable system. Good luck!
@wmden1
@wmden1 2 года назад
You probably have it figured out by now. I have to agree. Everything I tried was some irritating to my skin. Some of the add on border tapes were especially irritating, and you just about had to have them with the non Hollister bags. Hollister worked out the best for me, but they weren't real sporty, either. I had to use them, though, and have pretty much gotten used to them. I just use stoma powder and the spray on protector, some, and haven't had any serious problem.
@wmden1
@wmden1 2 года назад
If your output becomes thick, or is thick, most of the time, the filter contributes to severe pancaking, and the connecting flange, on the barrier becomes a reservoir for that pancaking, leading to the discharge being forced between the sides of the stoma and the adhesive barrier and causing a leak, possibly catastrophic. The filter eliminates ballooning by letting the gas out, which with no ballooning, the inside surfaces of the bag to stick together which then does not let the discharge fall to the bottom of the bag. A little ballooning is a good thing, for me, anyway.
@VeganOstomy
@VeganOstomy 2 года назад
Yes, one of the strategies to help with pancaking is to purposely add air to the bag and/or put a sticker on the filter to prevent a vacuum effect from worsening pancaking 👌

According to my ostomy nurse and others, the first flap is flipped back the other way, then they are folded normally. The first flap being backward is supposed to make a better lock when the unit is folded.
@VeganOstomy
@VeganOstomy Год назад
I wonder where they heard that from. Hollister recommends folding backwards, and that's how I've always done it without having any issues with leaking through the outlet or the outlet coming undone. That said, if the method you were shown works better for you, stick with it 👌

I have used this product for several months. While the wafer is nice the pouch is a real problem. The pouch leaks at the juncture of the flange and pouch. I agree with Eric as to the cheap material. Sometimes it leaks in the middle of the bad. The leaks are on the back so underwear gets stained as well as the ostomy bag cover. I'm looking to change products.
@VeganOstomy

Hi Terry. The pouch should not be leaking at the flange, so I wonder of it's not being snapped into place 100% or if you're using an accessory belt on it.

Eric......I'm copying below, my comment about keeping the bag dry when showering, to help folks, as you stress here the problem with these bags getting wet and not drying quickly.. This tip saves using a hair dryer. You can be dried, dressed - and good to go right after your shower..... A solution / tip for you (and other folks) who have trouble with the time this bag (or any material covered bag) takes to dry when just taking a shower........use an elasticated-edged shower cap. It takes a few seconds to pop it on. If you shop around, you can buy non-bulky ones that are fairly thin and soft....these are the best type - and you can use them again and again. I've got one I've been using over a year and it's still like new. I pop it in the washer from time to time, but you don't need to do this, as your final rinse in the shower cleans the cap anyway. Hope this helps.........Teddy UK xx

Oh well, seven and a half years later and the design is still exactly the same! That said, I get on okay with them. They put these on at the hospital and I tried various others when I came out but came back to these. I'm actually using their soft convex at the moment as they were on order while I figured out the flat ones are just as good (I think). For me, important to use a belt to keep it flat and no barrier ring as that encourages stuff underneath. Agree with all the negatives, one more with a colostomy is that the outlet is too narrow for thick output. I put a teaspoon of olive oil in after emptying and that helps things slide out the next time. I don't know why but I feel generally unwell wearing Coloplast, a shame as it does feel like a much higher quality product.

Good quality ostomy scissors will make cutting these a breeze. But I do agree that the material is harder than some other wafers. On the upside, the Hollister wafers tend to be pretty durable to breaking down too soon.

I personally prefer these Hollister bags that I have been using since 2013. I recently got new type of Hollister bags that flanges didn't have an opening seal so I had to put scissors into the seal that would open it up to discard the products in it. I notice how yourself and a few commenters say they hate how the bags last two to three days. This is my opinion but maybe that's how Hollister create the bags just to last the three to four days. The adhesive fold ups seem to come off after three days with me.

My husband uses the Hollister 2pc New Image system. I crease the outlet and trim the little plastic edges off the bottom of the outlet for my husband before he even puts the appliance on. the underside edge can be trimmed a bit more than the front edge, so it creates a lip to make it easier to open. My husband rinses the bag each time he empties so the inside stays cleaner. I also trim the wafer as where it is worn it is close to the leg crease when he sits or bends.

Hi Eric I had a question about the flanges.. I have had my ostomy for a little over 10 months now and I have only been using Hollister products with great success.. Never had a single leak UNTIL about 4 weeks ago I had my flange come apart twice in only days.. Now I am using Brava Barrier Strips to tack my flange in place. It works but I hate the extra to have to stick to my skin. The packages for the flanges have changed from those white boxes to red boxes now.. Is it possible that they changed the adhesive of the flanges.. Have you heard anything or maybe its just me..

Hi Jodi, Hollister has made some changes to their products over the years, and I do recall a change with my wafer as well. The release liner was different, but I didn't notice any difference in the wafer itself. I'd contact Hollister to give them feedback, but hopefully this was an isolated issue. I has some issues with the edges of my wafer (the tape border) not sticking well after a few days, but I think it was because of something I might have used on my skin prior.

Hi Beryl, I had a look at the MSDS for scotchgard, and it seems that if used correctly, there is no risk. The only ingredient that had data supporting carcinogenic risks was Isopropyl Alcohol via inhalation, but that was for a rat, and the data lacked enough information to even classify it. Once the product has been applied and dried, there should be no risk (just don't breathe the stuff when applying it!).

Hi Vegan Ostomy, I have been wearing the Hollister New Image Convexity base plate + bag for a few years now. I have a high output ileostomy which causes alot of ballooning + filter problems, yes I agree with you regarding the low quality of the cloth on the bag and how long the cloth (on the bag) and tape (on baseplate) stay wet for, however I haven't had any fungal skin infections. I don't mind the lock 'N' Roll closure, but think we need a tab or something to pull so we can open the closure without having to use finger nails. Dean a. I love the Sensura MIO, but I got leaks after a couple of hours wear. With a liquidy output from an Ileostomy, the MIO wafer in the two and one piece just lets a leak spread quickly across the wafer. There's no RESISTANCE in the adhesion. It just lets effluent seep straight through the wafer to the outer edge - and onto your clothes!!

Thank you for your comment and suggestion. Unfortunately, because I don't have a urostomy, it's difficult to offer any advice that's specific for urostomy care. Generally speaking, most tips for an ileostomate can apply to a urostomate, but there are certain products and care which only apply to a urostomate.

I have been a user of Hollister convex one piece pouches for almost 30 years and as such am reluctant to try another brand but recently they have discontinued a lot of their products and it seems Hollister pouches have really deteriorated in quality and as such - even though the flange will be still firmly stuck down - after 24 to 36 hours the actual pouch itself is stinking. I also find that when cleaning the flap the seams are so weak they very often tear at the sides. I am thinking I am going to have to bite the bullet and try another brand but I am unsure which company to try😕

I had the same experience with Hollister bags over the last few years, but ultimately ended up with a skin sensitivity to their wafer, so I'm no longer using them. After 30 years, you never know how much better a different appliance can be, so I'd suggest getting a hold of any and every sample you can find! Good luck!

Hi there! I am about to have surgery in 1 week, and I was just wondering what your favorite ostomy bag is. I know that the perfect ostomy bag varies from person to person for a variety of reasons but nonetheless I was just curious as to what your preferred ostomy appliance is. Thank you for your videos! They are extremely helpful
@VeganOstomy
@VeganOstomy 6 лет назад
Hey Jager, my current appliance (and preferred choice) is very similar to the one in this review. The only differences are a) my wafers have "ceraplus", which is a newer Hollister adhesive additive. b) I tend to use clear bags. This combo gives me excellent wear time of no fewer than 5 days, no leaks, and has a simple, functional design. Best of luck with your surgery!

I love Hollister! I have used them since my surgery and found that their products are better then others. No matter what the product (and I have tried quite a few), I cannot stand it when the appliances get wet so if there is a product out there that actually stays dry during a shower let me know. I have never had a problem with the cloth, the products last me a god 5-7 days. I love the lock-n - roll and do not trust clips at all, plus the clips are so very uncomfortable. Now when it comes to the filter, I have not tried a product that has a filter that I like because it always sees to be located on the top and it weighs down right away over your cloths and will not stay straight up. I truly think you did this video biased towards your favored product so Hollister never had a chance in this video. But the difficult thing about this is that everyone is different, everyone, when it comes to this issue to deal with, so what works for one will not work for the other and visa-versa. So I believe and will not listen to anymore videos on thoughts about products without me actually trying them. Also as a side note their close ended bags rock. I where the close ended bags during the day because they are smaller and then the bigger longer ones at night. Works out great! That's just me though.

Thank you for your comment! I've been using Hollister consistently for the past 6 months, and the issues I pointed out in the video are still annoyances, but the system is solid. I always recommend that people try out the products, especially since samples are so easy to come by, but I hope that Hollister (and other manufactures) can take notes on some of the gripes we have and make changes to improve them :) I don't give preferential treatment to any brands or products, so I don't believe the video has any bias towards another brand or product, I simply pointed out what other manufacturers have done better, and where the Hollister shines. The filter on this bags are still the best I've used, and while not perfect, are pretty reliable and I can notice a HUGE difference when I use other products and experience frequent ballooning with them (which I don't get while wearing these Hollister bags). I do agree that the filters can still be improved on! Take care!

It's entirely possible they changed something. More companies follow what California allows, so if they banned something (and they often do), then you can only reformulate your product!

@VeganOstomy
@VeganOstomy 9 лет назад
The end of the bag has a semi-rigid plastic that seems to be laminated between the thin clear plastic "lips" on the very end. I'm not sure if cutting those "lips" would cause this semi-rigid plastic to fall out. Also, I believe the ends also offer some waterproofing for people who have very liquid out put. I wouldn't touch it, and with the right technique, cleaning it isn't too much of a problem.

Not a fan of this ‘red’ wafer’s tape border. It’s not wide enough. When an edge starts lifting up, you’re going to have a leak in 24-48 hours. Patients shouldn’t have to spend another $60 on a pack of 20 barrier strips to hold down the edges. The ‘blue’ style wafers with the larger wafer is superior.
@VeganOstomy
@VeganOstomy Год назад
I've been using the Hollister 1pc version of this appliance, and while I do get edge peeling, it happens after around 7 days, and I usually change it at around day 10. Edge peeling can be minimized by prepping the skin and making sure to apply the after while standing (not sitting) so that skin stretching doesn't cause the edge to peel more. That said, while tape borders aren't perfect, they work much better for me than the full, hydrocolloid wafers, which tend to have worse edge peeling.

Very informative, thank you. However, my problem is that the waste (feces) does NOT drop. It just keeps accumulating around the Stoma. I do use the Lubricant/Deotorant but, the pouch just "pancakes". I have tried many pouches: 1 pc., 2pcs, flat, convex and from different Companies. The once without a Filter seem to work better. I do not wear anything tight over it. What do you suggest??
@VeganOstomy

What you describe is "pancaking" and I do have a video with a few suggestions to try: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3EIC4zrUups.html Covering the filter (if you still want to use a filtered bag) is one suggestion, but also making sure that the bag has some air in it will also help considerably. Good luck!

I too have noticed what you were talking about when it comes to the end of the opening. Those two little floppy pieces of plastic that is hard to open up unless you use ia fingernail. The way I handle that is to trim off those it off before I put the bag on or as soon as I put the bag on. And since I don't like getting the bad wet, I use those little bowl covers that you can get like at the dollar store that look like a little shower caps in different sizes. I use the second size up from the small wrap it up pretty tightly and then use waterproof tape if I want to shower with it on. I know you said the fabric seems cheap but I find it very soft and it doesn't irritate my skin like some of the other brands, unfortunately one of those brands is Coloplast.. Unfortunately I have very sensitive skin, so I normally have a dark ring around my stoma caused by adhesives or paste... I have to take a lot of Benadryl or deal with major itching around my bag.
@VeganOstomy
@VeganOstomy 8 лет назад
Thanks for all the info, Michelle! For me, I still find creasing the end to be the most effective and simple way to deal with the flaps that are hard to open on these bags. And thanks for letting me know about etsy for those waterproof covers. I don't mind getting my bag wet or drying it, but covers can help people who are bothered. Take care!

Yes. It's the same with any ostomy bag. There's no danger in getting the bag wet. Just be aware that prolonged soaking may cause the edge of the wafer to absorb water and peel off a little.

I find with the sticky tape edge, it doesn't leave enough stomahesive to adhere to the skin so need to change much more frequently. the flange itself needs to be larger, there is very little option on the size of the flange. If you change often enough, all the problems mentioned are done away with.but agree with the emptying of the pouch, it can be messy because the exit doesn't open easily, How can he wear a pouch for so many days, most folk change every few days, glad I am not his friend?

The newer "Ceraplus" wafers adhere better than the traditional New Image wafers. I had 8 day's of wear last week without doing anything special.

I used Hollister Center Point Lock product for 13 years and NEVER had any problems with it. The connection between the flange and the pouch was tight, never moved and never blew out if it got too full before I could empty it, or because of gas. It never leaked, there was never any odors, the pouch was larger and the tail was longer and the clip fit and was not an issue. Hollister decided to discontinue the center point lock system and took away any choice options. The new product you are reviewing sucks! The connection between the pouch and the flange is so flimsy and weak and it leaks odor. I had a humiliating experience where the pouch filled with gas and I was going to release it, but as soon as I tried, the pouch just exploded, for lack of a better description. It happened in my car, in front of someone I had not seen in many years and who was my guest for a few days. There was feces everywhere! All over me and my clothes. I got to my apartment and bathroom and cleaned up and changed my wafer and pouch. Suddenly, there was more output and for some reason it burst through the wafer and created more mess. The wafer on the center point lock was larger; the new image wafer is smaller and does not stick very well at all. The pouch is constantly separating from the wafer. I remove that stupid cloth with scissors I keep in the bathroom just for that purpose; the cloth is cheap, tears after a day or two, and when feces gets in it, it is hard to remove. You have to really wash it and then roll the pouch in a towel to remove all the water, which sort of works; the cloth will remain damp against the skin. The lock and roll system is a pain, the velcro flap gets caught in the cloth and tears it, the tail is difficult to clean. The option of a tail with a clip is not great - the clip is really long, and it gouges the skin and gets twisted up in the cloth. I HATE NEW IMAGE! And I am looking for something else.

I would like to add that Medicare allows 20 bags and wafers per month and with the New Image crap, I use more. I am constantly trying to find ways to get more use out of what I am allowed. It is a serious problem and Hollister doesn't care.
@VeganOstomy
@VeganOstomy 6 лет назад
I'm sorry you've had that kind of experience. I haven't had those kinds of problems after years of wearing New Image wafers and pouches. I would suggest letting Hollister know about your experience. They'll likely ask for the lot number on the package. Out of curiosity, are you wearing an ostomy support belt or anything that attached or pushes on the wafer?
