June 3rd, 2024 : The new Hollow Clock V is released! • Hollow Clock V
New version of the Hollow Clock is released. Contrary to the former version (Hollow Clock 3, • Hollow Clock 3 - 3D pr... ), the angle of the hour hand is controlled not mechanically but magnetically.
The 3D data and code are published for free at
www.instructab...

I have come from other video trying to understand the 2 gear ring functionality and it is genius man great thinking

Thanks! Yes, I think the idea of using worm gear to give 1 : 12 gear ratio between the minute and hour hands of a clock is quite original and it is another highlight of my design.

clock 3 was awesome but this is even crazier!! Congrats, I really love to see how the design changed from 1 to 4. Can't wait for clock 5 in 2023!

Very cool, as usual 👍🏻 Well done! Should be easy to have a second hand for an alternative time zone, right? Just put in some more magnets and a second hour hand. I’m a sucker for GMT watches 😁

Thanks! Yes, I it would be nice to have 12 sets (12 positions) of magnets around the hour rotor that enables 1-hour step time adjustment. I will try it.

The hollow clock looks amazing and I really appreciate you for sharing how it was made. My boyfriend and I recreated it with 3D printer and we really want to get in contact with you! I can’t find a way to message you.😢 Would you have a business email so we can share some pictures and discuss with you? We love this design and thank you!

Hi, can you make hollow clock with second hand? I think it's like combining previous design for second hand to move
@shiura
@shiura Год назад
It is theoretically possible, but actually the size of the reduction gears would be too large. The gear ratio from the second to the minute hand is 1:60, so it needs so many teeth (or needs more gears for multi-stage reduction) . The smallest size of the gear is limited by the preciseness of the printers. For common consumer 3D printers, it is safe to keep the minimum pitch of the gear teeth around 4 - 5mm.

Hi! Great design. One question, since I am planning to do a remake. How accurate is it to be used on a daily basis? We don't need an additional RTC module?
@shiura
@shiura Год назад
It depends on how you tune the parameter in the source code. I think the stability of the clock is not so bad but control with the theoretically calculated value (60,000 milli seconds for one minute) is too slow.

I think any nano controller including ver.3.0 can be used. I used compatibles of 3.0.

I've check the connections over and over, is the stepper test file supposed to constantly rotate the motor or is it supposed to pulse and rotate a bit at a time? What happening is that it turns, then stops, the turns then stops, sometimes it turn for more time other for less then it eventually just stops turning. EDIT: I have no idea how you guys pulled this off, the only way I got the stepper motor to work was to feed the controller with a completely isolated power supply different from the arduino, let me explain: If I connect the controller to the 5V and GND of the Arduino I get that constant on off thing, thinking it was lack of power I connected the 5V directly on the USB 5V pin, still no dice. So then I tried the 5V 2.5Amp supply that I tested with and connected both the arduino and the driver to the power supply still nothing, only connecting the Arduino via USB and the stepper controller to the power supply totally separate from each other will the stepper motor work properly. So no matter which way I try if I connect both boards together the either the USB or the power supply the damn thing doesn't work, I'm so frustrated right now because I obviously don't want to have to separate power supplies to power a clock.
@shiura
@shiura Год назад
As I answered in the other site, the micro controller is unintentionally reset when the motor is rotated. It might be voltage drop or noise issue. In my case, simple connection of Arduino nano and driver board works fine except the case of defective motor or driver board.

What program were you using to simulate the movement of the gears?
@shiura
@shiura 7 месяцев назад
I do not use simulator. Just the gear ratio is calculated. The computer graphics of gear movement is generated by Blender. The CG model is common to the shape data for 3D printer.

You can find .ino file (source code for Arduino IDE) from thingiverse or instructables listed in the description of this video clip.

Что если использовать датчик холла для определения часовой стрелки. И тем самым определить ее положение. И исходя из этого прописать в коде настройку времени.What if you use a hall sensor to detect the hour hand. And thereby determine its position. And based on this, write the time setting in the code.
@shiura
@shiura 10 месяцев назад
It might be less precise because the position of minute hand is not possible to sense. We can use only one hall sensor (and magnet) because they interfere each other. I would like to keep this thing as simple as possible, so I have no plan to add automatic time adjustment function.
