hehe, she was famous for saying " Only hardcore raiders deserve Nagafen loot "....she was the producer for Everquest for a long time and made quite a few missteps and eventually left. I think the environment at Blizzard is better for her. Everquest had a lot of uncertainty budget limitations, very few developers.

It's always good to be able to put our "demands" in the context of how the team actually operates. We can be better consumers if we actually know what we're asking for, and it lets people give more constructive criticisms and feasible suggestions, and creates less of a barrier of disdain from the devs who might disregard an idea because it sounds silly with regard to how things actually work. Anyone who's worked in any sort of customer-facing business has had those experiences of "if they only knew how it actually worked, they'd know it's not that simple." This kind of transparency from the devs being open about their actual development process has been really helpful. I remember back when the Dragonflight launch fiasco happened with the boats and portals where the actual engineers on the team were posting details about what happened and why. Put it in really interesting context and helped humanize them a little more. Does transparency excuse failure? Of course not. But it makes it feel more like we're talking to actual people when we voice our complaints.

@@Bradgilliswhammyman I mean, doesn't that go without saying? You can't always make the "right" decision. And even if you managed to make the "right" decision, it doesn't mean everyone will like it. Rather than focusing on the blunders or the successes, it's about getting it "right" more often than not, and making sure you can fix your past mistakes or shift direction. As long as your actions lean towards a net positive, that makes you "good" at the job.
@HH-hd7nd
@HH-hd7nd 3 месяца назад
@@Bradgilliswhammyman That doesn't mean anything. It is impossible to always make the right decision, and it is also impossible to please every player all the time. Players have different interests and expectations. I for example would never touch PvP with a 100 meter long pole. I despise PvP not only in WoW but in general and I hate competitive gameplay. This means Plunderstorm wasn't for me and players like me and some of them have voiced their anger loud and clear that Plunderstorm was a PvP event (a frustration I don't share btw). Some people would say the devs made a bad decision by releasing a Battle Royal, but in my opinion they're wrong. Even if it wasn't for me doesn't mean its for no one - a lot of people enjoyed Plunderstorm. It wasn't a bad decision to release it. Or take Torghast - many hated it but it also had a lot of fans. It's never just bad/good.

I love how much she talks about the playerbase and player experience. Especially how she considers the different fan bases. There's a fine line that needs to be walked by Blizzard when it comes to catering to these different "types" or categories of WoW players. There is a balance that needs to be achieved so that all these types of players can be satisfied simultaneously; I think Holly is aware of this and hearing what she says in this interview is relieving.

@@jakubpelikan2393 I primarily play SoD currently, I haven’t touched retail since Dragonflight’s launch - but classic is not carrying retail. Retail still has a lot of active players. WoW is a huge MMORPG that has been around for 20 years now, there’s multiple baskets to put eggs in. Blizzard has the means to put eggs in each basket and should be expected to do so by their playerbase (I mean cmon, we pay a monthly sub for this). Maintaining a “core audience” while providing the best experience to different styles of play can and should be done at the same time.

I want a ‘Warcraft Story Experience.’ A single player experience, streamlined, going all the way back to Vanilla. Streamline the main story beats, add some new in engine cutscenes here and there, and tell the story of Warcraft from the start in an instanced single player mode. Cut all the fluff, and go from main story beat to main story beat; from Vanilla, to TBC, to Wrath, all the way up to the previous expansion to whichever this feature launches in.

She reminds me a bit of Yoshi P with how she comes across and is very genuinely apologetic with no PR scripted crap. She seems to have inspired many good ideas and the changes that broke the usual wow mould, and as much as Plunder storm didn't appeal to me, it's was very popular with a lot and received very positively which is a positive. Remember, it's not just about us as individuals, but as a whole, and since we all have our own favourite parts of wow we like, we're not going to like everything, and nor should we. It would be way too much to try to do!! It needed a womans touch, albeit the right woman, and it seems she has fitted in very well within her role and has the respect of those working under her. Happy people ..... productive environment ...... better creativity ..... better game ..... And that's what we see is happening here. It was a good choice for Microsoft to appoint her in this role and hope the game thrives under her leadership.

I'm a relatively new player ( started at the end of shadowlands ) that made it to DF heroic raids and mythic + loops, and i can 100% say yes there is a massive discoverability issue within the game for us, and it starts with the map that's extremely outdated from a UI and generla usability perspective, it gives little to no information, you can't zoom in enough, far from even remotely close to enough markers etc. etc. Maybe you need to add in a new color code or something to distinguish questlines that will help you unlock something new to your day to day or week to week gameplay such as unlocking this or that meta progression system. ( XIV does that for instance ) On the good note the game is just massive, still extremely immersive when you get into it, there is a sermingly limitless well of content for us, and the updates coming up just gets us even more excited about it. I think WoW Retail has its best years still ahead of it !

Depending on how well these things improve over time, this could help the game grow to pretty big numbers especially when you factor in where the game was not too long ago. There's huge potential for growth by the end of this trilogy the WoW team is on.

Love Holly's attitude, and always loved Ion. Think we may have light at the end of the tunnel for Warcraft.

MoP remix could be super good, so good that it could be the new leveling style in the game. Kinda gives me the FF leveling feel; play through the expansion story through all the main quests, dungeons, raids etc. you will know what happened, who the characters are etc. as someone who quite enjoys story, it’s been hard to catch up fully on the expansions I didn’t play. I’m really pumped to see how it goes

It feels like things have really trended better since she's come on board, and while of course that isn't just her, I do wonder what experience she had previously (not just which games, but what kind of roles and projects) that resulted in this success. As someone in IT, it's a huge difference between someone who is an engineer leading vs a finance or sales person leading. She feels a lot like someone who actually knows how this stuff works vs a finance person. (No offense to finance folks, the role is important but unless your company's selling financial products I don't believe most finance people have the long term vision needed for delivering good products in other industries)

She knows the long tail of MMOs because she was from Everquest and Everquest II. Which may not sound that useful, as they're older than WoW (by 1-5 years) and certainly never kept updated for modern gaming, but it possibly means she knows how to maximize what resources are available, and Blizz/MS are going to have a lot more resources than EQ did.
