They pull the cover off the custom Job for Jimmy Shine. Love the laughs in this movie,but the stuff with Duke,Jimmy and smitty are my favorites. We all know Jimmy was not coming back.
My aunt and uncle snuck me into the drive in near my house when I was 10 years old to see this. I lost aunt Judy last week to cancer. RIP aunt Judy thanks for everything.
This scene was so genuine and perfect. The awkwardness of tough guys who are scared for their friend, and want to show their love. The Jimmy subplot was a great juxtaposition against Newbomb’s hijinx. RIP, Jimmy Shine. We lost him in the A Shau Valley, at Hue, in the Arizona, and the Mekong, over 50,000 times.

1980 I remember watching this with my dad when he was 40 and I was 12.. He started crying when they played the song remembering his youth. I'm 54 now.. I understand
I’m 52 now, and I “see” a lot of my dad, rest his soul, and his old friends in this movie. My heart aches for times gone by that I wasn’t around for, but it all seems so familiar to me.
I'm 59 now, my dad did a tour before I was born, then returned to the Army when my brother was born in 67'. Total of three tours in Vietnam. My best friends dad was in Hanoi for seven years. Returned to find his wife remarried and his kids adopted by another guy. Other friends dad's didn't return. Dad did a total of 44 years, I did 23. I had a 17 year old, and I'm not sure I want him to go. A lot of mixed feelings... this scene says a lot to a lot of us. Thanks -
One of my favorite scenes ever. So cool of Tony Nancy to appear in this. There will never be a movie like this again. It’s American Graffiti meets Animal House in all the best ways.
What a movie. High jenks and seriousness with Jimmy. GOD how i wish i was a teen thru the 60's l, but who knows where or if id still be on this Earth due to Vietnam. GOD bless ALL that serve and a long overdue Welcome Home ! Would love to relive time as long as it was back during the same time as lived and not in today!

Awesome movie and this part makes me feel emotional. Really sad that the car culture and real car guys are aging out or are already gone. The new vehicle technology dosen't draw many people's interest
@@juanc5149 the scene may be strong but technology while its great has taken away the soul of the vehicle. Cars like that 57 had a sound and feel that new cars just don't have. New vehicles may have as much power and go as fast or faster but it took talent to tune those engines it took a ability to feel the engine especially carburetors when you hit it to know how to drive it. It's a whole different world from fuel injection and tuning with laptops. It's a shame more younger people cant experience the more intimate feel of man and simple machine nothing against technology but it really is different.
@@shawnbirt4161 Lmao, a person can go from never seeing a carburetor to tuning one with his butt cheeks after one afternoon of google. As for feel, I dunno, personally I like vehicles that don’t handle like a dump truck when it encounters the first turn. It really doesn’t take that much talent to advance ignition and jet a carburetor. Just a wideband, a timing light and listen for engine knock. Easy peasy.
I feel like Jimmy Shine's story is one that really shows what it was like to be dragged into the Vietnam conflict at that age and at that time. I grew up nowhere near that era. But I would like to think that this is a good depiction of a tragic moment in history.
What made it even worse was that Jimmy thought he wouldn't see combat, since in 1965 we were only sending advisors. Little did he know that the whole thing was about to blow up just as he got drafted. This and the sub-plot involving Duke & his girlfriend were fairly heavy topics in an otherwise hilariously light-hearted film.
I saw this movie at the drive-in so many years ago and as the years have gone by when I thought about the movie I always remember this scene I think it has a tremendous amount of depth almost like it doesn’t belong in this movie but it’s powerful

Chris Myrick I spent many weekends at Morro Bay when I was a kid. I had a Great Aunt and Uncle that lived in Paso Robles. I can't tell you how many times we would go to Morro Bay for fish at the Fish Bowl #2. I heard several years ago that it burned down.
when i saw this movie for the first time 20 years ago, i thought these guys gave this car to him as a gift. Now i realise, it was a project (he most likely focused on) that took a great deal of time and finesse to finish. His friends and co workers worked on it before he left for Vietnam. At least he got to see the final project. And they did it all for him.
Tony Nancy had successful rear engine dragster, before Garlits. It was Olds powered, than switched to a 392 Hemi. Tony Nancy did a lot of upholstery work in the 60's.
Maybe one of the greatest scenes in moviedom. After all, Jimmy is leaving for VietNam. But hell, he’s got nothing to worry about. It ain’t even a war. He’ll be fine. Right?
WOW! I can honestly say that my seventy-year-old memory cannot recall my ever having seen this movie! I do recall hearing about it over the years, but I don't believe that I have ever actually seen it. Guess what just got added to my To Do list? P.S: I just ordered the DVD!
Fendergibs. Not sure why they didn't finish the car but it is part of the story line. In the ending scenes Duke, Smitty and Jimmy Shine are in Dukes car and Jimmy Shine asks the guy to to take care of his girl DeeDee and if anything happens to him the Knights were to get the Coupe.
Love this movie and love the music. One thing that always bothered me was that it was supposed to be taking place on Halloween night 1965, when “ California Dreaming” had yet to even be recorded.

for about fifty years i thought it was "i began to pray" then about three years ago i heard i believe the Beach Boys version with "i pretend to pray". glad i'm not the only one singing it wrong all these years.
Saw this when it first came out over 40 years ago. The movie is more about the end of an era and the beginning of another - car clubs, hamburger joints, cruising were moving out hello hard rock music, drugs, and Vietnam.
I like when Duke asks if this was piss yellow? They laugh and one of the mechanics says it Tony Danza yellow... Also to the guy that said should of played ACDC...This movie was set in 1965! ACDC was still 10yrs away or so...
They built the car for Jimmy knowing he may or may not come back but wanted that car to be on his mind and for the club and the guys at the shop to be on his mind. Of course he's going to do his best to get back but the more initiative the better. Actually in October of '65 things in Vietnam were heated up pretty good. And for the person that mentioned the color of the car and the reply "That's Tony Danza yellow", what was actually said was "That's Tony Nancy yellow" and the guy who said it was Tony Nancy. Only reason I know these things is because I searched and searched on google to find them out. I know Tony Nancy was a car guy but not sure exactly what he was most famous for. I did see some pictures of him in a drag racing suit.
He did. I have that very same model of 8-Track player, too. This movie is supposed to take place in 1965, so if this were for real it would be one of the very earliest 8-Track installations.

@@exilemike actually this is one f the better looking '40 Ford customs that were built , however I will agree that there were some UGLY ones built also . Something to remember here , when this car was first customized it was just another old car , and could have just as easily ended up being crushed and sold for scrap . Thankfully this one was saved , many weren't .
It was a great movie, a little corny at times but had a nice feel. They only had a handful of actors and Fran Drescher is in EVERY scene, which takes place all over town on the same Halloween night, she is annoying everywhere. It seams to have faded into history and is very hard to find. Not sure I have ever seen screened on TV. Hard to believe it is 33 years old now. I made my girlfriend see it 2 weekends in a row at the old Acme Drive In near Cincinnati.
Tony Nancy Yellow, not Tony Danza yellow. That would have been funny, but unfortunately, not. Tony Nancy was a famous hot rod painter back in the day. He's actually in the scene saying 'it's Tony Nancy Yellow'.

I saw an interview with Tony Danza and he said that after he made the remark, the director just decided to keep it in because he thought it was funny and didn't think anyone would catch it because at that time Tony Danza was not a famous well-known actor.

This movie had the Real Don Steele!!! Famous LA DJ in his own right...thats who the pledges had the guys in Watts, make the request to for them. Don Steele was also prominant in Once about a time in Hollywood also...
Seeing as this is a movie(a great movie!), What happens to the characters is open to your imagination. To me, it would seem fitting that Neubaum Turk would go on to become chief or police.
I disagree. If you listen at the end, Jimmy says he wasn't even sure if he WAS going to Vietnam! He said they are just sending advisors over at that point. He was going in the service, the next day, Nov 1st 1965. The 1st combat troops only arrived 3 months prior. He still had to go through 8 weeks basic training and then Advanced training. If he did get sent over after that, his DEROS would of gotten him out of Nam and back in 12 months, 13 months if he was going into the Marines; which we don't know if he was army or marines. Again, combat deaths between late 65 and 1966 were very low compared to 67-68-69. And again, he wasn't even sure he was actually going to Vietnam. Yes something to think about, but i doubt he went and if he did, his chances of survival in that 1966 "time frame" were excellent.
Because they hadn't finished building it yet. They are talking about the guy who rubbed out the paint (polished it) and the other guy 'who put the tune on it', so it just got finished.
