Groucho's second appearance as host of Hollywood Palace, originally aired on Apr 17, 1965. In addition to hosting, Groucho reprises the introduction of Captain Spaulding from the play/movie "Animal Crackers" (@ 50:00), with a special appearance by the grand dame herself. . . the original Mrs. Rittenhouse. . . Margaret Dumont! This was Dumont's last public appearance; she passed away shortly after filming this show.
Also appearing is Groucho's daughter, Melinda, who sings a number that's a clear rip off of Petula Clark's hit "Downtown", entitled "The East Side of Town" (!) The song couldn't possibly be more derivative without its writers getting sued for plagiarism. (@ 9:15) After her solo number, Melinda and Groucho perform a charming duet of Irving Berlin's "Play a Simple Melody" (@ 14:15), a song they performed together many times on TV when she was younger.
Here's a link to Groucho's first appearance hosting Hollywood Palace, performing one of his favorite songs, "Dr. Hackenbush":
• Hollywood Palace 1-11 ...
This program also features:
- Gordon and Sheila MacRae: "I Want to Be with You"
- Sheila MacRae: "Hello Dolly" and "Happy Days Are Here Again"
- Gordon MacRae: "More"
- Shecky Greene: Stand up comedy
- Miriam Makeba (African folk singer): African Game Song
- Lydia Torea (flamenco dancer): "Dos en Ritmo" & "Un Pinto"
- Don Saunders (comedian from Scotland)
- The Four Kents (trick unicyclists from Denmark)

How cool... The audience's prolonged applause for Margaret shows it understands how wonderful she was as Groucho's "straight man" for all those movies all those decades ago. A real "thank you for your service" tribute. Yes, she died just three days after this showing. How fitting that Groucho mentioned Margaret when he accepted an honorary Oscar for The Brothers at the 1974 Academy Awards.

Groucho said, in this famous and wonderful Carnegie Hall solo concert, that Margaret had no sense of humor, didn't understand the jokes, and would later ask him why something was funny. I don't really believe that. Dumont was the female Bud Abbott, and a perfect straight man/woman needs a sharp wit to pull off sly humor.

A real joy to find this and see Margaret Dumont and Groucho reunited for my favorite Marx Brothers song. She was fantastic as expected and Groucho witty and clever as ever. He even had a few new asides to throw in. Margaret was obviously enjoying herself as she finally laughed and smiled at Groucho's puns. They always claimed she didn't get the jokes, but that is clearly not the case. Perhaps just a good show biz myth that was to good to be corrected. Thanks for all of the memories, fun and laughter with this post.

Groucho is HILARIOUS!! His wit and sarcasm is the best. I also loved seeing Groucho's daughter Melinda doing her gig; that had to be such a rush for her. The dance choreography during the song was well done and certainly top notch for its day. For a late teen, she had it down. Probably the finest medley of the popular dances (of the time) ever. She was awesome and really looked gorgeous. 'The Hollywood Palace' on ABC was such a great show and in many ways outdid 'The Ed Sullivan Show' on CBS. In Feb. 2015, I was in Hollywood and one of my must sees was to find the 'The Hollywood Palace' building. I googled it and knew it was still over on Vine and across from the landmark Capital Records building. So, on my last day in town I took the subway there and, needless to say, I was star struck just being in front of it. The giant marquis with chase lights was long gone but I thought of ALL the acts, performers, comedians, musicians and Hollywood's A-list who worked there all those years ago. It really should be a historic landmark in its own right. As it stands now, it's a nightclub called the Avalon, but the building is the same. Even the large open lot next door where many high wire and trapeze acts performed is still there as a parking lot. I talked to a doorman and mentioned to him what this place used to be and he was clueless about its rich history in Hollywood entertainment. I can't fault him as HP wasn't in 'his time', only in ours. Anyway, I was so thrilled to see it up close. Thanks for posting this and the others! I also wanted to point out that the announcer for HP during its 6-year run is none other than the great Dick Tufeld. His voice work for TV shows and commercials spanned several decades but he's probably best known as the voice of the Robot on 'Lost In Space' which ran on CBS from 1965-1968. Also, read that the Palace would get all new cameras and equipment over the summer of 1965 (between seasons) to go to full COLOR broadcast in the Fall of 1965.

Margaret Dumont's last appearance. But for 82 years old she looks quite slim and fit. She was the perfect foil for Groucho. "I took some pictures of the native girls when I was there...but they weren't developed." No one like Marx today. Way too clever. "The Hollywood Palace" tried to be like The Ed Sullivan Show but it just never had Ed's magic and quality of guests. The one thing it did have that worked well was the special guest host that I liked. Unfortunately, they never booked any truly exciting guests. Margaret Dumont making an appearance with Groucho after all those years in their films was really special.

Dumont said, "Scriptwriters build up to a laugh, but they don't allow any pause for it. That's where I come in. I ad lib-it doesn't matter what I say-just to kill a few seconds so you can enjoy the gag. I have to sense when the big laughs will come and fill in, or the audience will drown out the next gag with its own laughter... I'm not a stooge, I'm a straight lady. There's an art to playing straight. You must build up your man, but never top him, never steal the laughs from him."
