Hollywood Shuffle "Sneaking in the Movies" n' Sh$t
Hollywood Shuffle is a comedy film released in 1987 that satirizes the stereotyping of African Americans in both film and television. It was directed and produced by Robert Townsend, and written by Robert Townsend, Keenen Ivory Wayans, and Dom Irrera (uncredited). Comedians featured in this film include Robert Townsend, Keenen Ivory Wayans, Damon Wayans, Dom Irrera, Don Reed, and John Witherspoon. Many of the cast and crew later became involved in the Fox TV sketch comedy series In Living Color (1990-1994), and the style of humor is similar
Hollywood Shuffle was produced on a very tight budget. Townsend personally financed the movie with his own credit cards, and, in order to avoid obtaining permits, he asked his crew to wear college sweatshirts to pose as students.
The film's trailer (included on the MGM DVD release), which is hosted by Townsend, jokes about the lack of funds. As the trailer ends, Townsend begs the audience to see the film as the set's furniture is repossessed. The trailer ends as Townsend is forced to use a disposable lighter when the electricity is turned off.

I can’t tell that even with his recent career not on par with black media. You can say he was the Melvin Van Peeble of the 1980s, and the starting point for Spike Lee and so forth.

The entire film’s production came out of his own pocket. Almost zero actors do that, cause they never wrote a day in their life. That’s the difference between an actor and a REAL film star. Too bad Hollywood sleeps on that though

I remember the first time I saw this on TV back in the late 80s when I was about 15, I nearly pissed myself laughing. I rented it out from the video shop the following day, and played it to my parents expecting them to find it hilarious.... It went down like a fire at an orphanage, their faces never cracked 😂. Classic film anyway.

Me too! Although I didn't quite "come up" at the same time. I saw Meteor Man as a kid in the theatre. I loved it! Tthen one day years later, saw Hollywood Shuffle on HBO or Showtime or something... Instantly recognized Wayans, but then said to my brother "That's Meteor Man!" Quick jaunt to IMBD, and thus I realized the genius of Robert Townsend! They should play this film more. Heck, re-release it! The issues with Hollywood Mr. Townsend highlights are still relevant today.

Sure it's 30 years old. Sure the clothes are dated. But when 7 zombie pimps shuffle toward you, clutching their junk...Wheahs...mah.....BITCHES!....you either collapse in laughter or run from the room, and frequently both! I wet my pants laughing 30 years ago and the horror/humor hasn't aged at all. More frightening than the Walking Dead, and funnier than anything since. This movie had a point that has barely been addressed so well since. Mr. Townsend is a genius!
