This is the theme music to the Heatter-Quigley game show The "Hollywood Squares", which aired on NBC-TV and in syndication. It was used from 1979 to 1981, and is composed by Stan Worth.
Once the daytime version's ratings slipped with Paul Lynde's departure, the show was taking a dive afterward, and his return to the Vegas show didn't bring them back up. This music was an attempt to updste itself into the 1980's, not to mention the new loud set didn't help much either. By this time, the show's age had shown and they never could recapture the atmosphere of the 1970's.
@operator35 Wouldn't have made a difference. Paul Lynde's departure from the show hurt the ratings (his return didn't help either). Fred Silverman seemed to have disliked this show. He was going to move the show to the late morning time slot. But Heatter-Quigley decided to end the daytime show and concentrate on the nighttime show (lasted one more season though).
I think they were trying to update things to fit the 1980s, but it just didn't work. The show was nearly 15 years old by this time and it had begun to be tedious. I also think the show was hurt by having no more secret square games, and the contestants only winning prizes instead of cash. At least the set had been updated some.
It wasn't the theme music. NBC broke the cardinal rule of a hit show. Don't fuck with the time slot and that's what they did and got lower ratings as a result. Same thing with Match Game. CBS fucked with the time slot and regretted it. They tried to repair the damage but was too late. That plus Richard Dawson's departure to focus on Family Feud didn't help matters. Same with HS. Lower ratings + Paul Lynde's absence = NO bueno :(
Hollywood Squares TV Game Show with Peter Marshall also with Tac-Tak-Toe with Stars in each Box that how I got Started in the World of Trivia Games back in 1974-1975 the Rest is History I keep doing Trivia till the Day I die
Back when they switched to this theme music, I thought it was a big mistake, but it actually grew on me after hearing it several times. Maybe if they had kept the old music the show would have lasted a little longer.
The original Hollywood Squares was done at NBC Studios, now called The Burbank Studios from 1966-1980. The current Burbank Studios is no relation to the former Burbank Studios that was down the street from NBC in Burbank and was jointly owned by Warner Brothers and Columbia Pictures. Now, the original Burbank Studios is entirely owned by Warner Brothers, while Columbia Pictures has its studios in Culver City, California.
@@ClassiCole No it wasn't. It was at NBC Studios in Burbank, California. HS moved to the Riviera Hotel and Casino for its final syndicated season in 1980-81. Where do you get your information from anyway?

Well, at the time the NBC president was Fred Silverman, and he was said to have hated this show. He axed this along with Bill Cullen's "Chain Reaction" and Alex Trebek's "High Rollers". It was replaced by David Letterman's 90 minute talk show, which was axed itself after only a few months on the air.

"SO IT,S A TRIP TO HAWAII & 2 CARS!! & THIS SHOWCASE DESIGNED TO HONOR & REMEMBER THE CLASSIC TV GAME SHOW THE HOLLYWOOD SQUARES WITH PETER MARSHALL!!--CAN & WILL BE YOURS IF THE PRICE IS RIGHT!!
What I did'nt understand is if he hated the game show genre so much....why in tarnation did Fred put his money into the Maury (You Are The Father) Povich version of 21 in 2000?
Game shows were booming then with millionaire and greed so he thought there was money to be had. Gotta admit revived the long dormant 21 is pretty random though
It,s too bad they couldn't have Gene Rayburn Brett Somers Charles Nelson Reilly Richard Dawson & Fannie Flagg along with Karen Valentine Rose Marie George Gobel & Paul Lynde!!--ALL IN THE HOLLYWOOD SQUARES & HERE'S THE MASTER OF THE HOLLYWOOD SQUARES PETER MARSHALL!!
@benquicks I actually have one CD which has A theme from the Marshall Era of HS but its the one called "Bob and Merill's theme" which is the first one heard. Part of me likes this one better and I wish it was put onto a CD but sadly I don't see that happening but maybe someday if it hasn't happened already
Actually, the first Squares theme is "The Silly Song" by Jimmie Haskell. And although Mr. Haskell and Peter Marshall recorded versions of it, the actual theme itself is presumed lost. (Yes, Peter recorded a vocal version of the Silly Song on his LP "For the Love of Pete" - lyrics by...are you ready for this? - Steve Allen!)
Well, I'll bet that show only lasted a few months because likely his humour wasn't suited for daytime. I wouldn't say he's a disgrace. I prefer him over Leno. Also, his sidekick Paul Shaffer is from my home town of Thunder Bay, Ontario.
I wished Jack Barry from The Joker.s Wild appeared on The Hollywood Squares along with Geoff Edwards from Treasure Hunt.Oh yeah another mention Carroll O'Connor from All In The Family. They had Rob Reiner & Jean Stapleton (Mike & Edith)& Sally Struthers (Gloria)on the nighttime Squares but never Archie Bunker.
frist was the time change to i think 1230 then pauls departure then switched to 1030 stupid 20000 pyrmaid was cancelled a week later i was one devested 10 year old
How did the third theme song on "The Hollywood Squares" come from the first and second themes? Well we are known with familiar music to all other Heatter-Quigley game shows we watched back in the 70s, and by the way there is not any cussing about it.
Just like LET.S MAKE A DEAL & THE PRICE IS RIGHT WILL ALWAYS BE MONTY HALL.& BOB BARKER,S SHOW although Wayne Brady & Drew Carey aren,t too bad enough either but again not the same.Just like to me HOLLYWOOD SQUARES will always be Peter Marshall,s show even though the John Davidson & Tom Bergeron versions weren.t all bad but not all great either.
