All the neighbors watching this are going to be redoing their decks and checking the caulking at the very least.

My parents attended a local church...very active then. The basement was used for local dinners etc. WELL the sump pump quit. Flooded the whole basement.!! Well the insurance company fixed everything and installed A BACKUP SUMP PUMP. They had two sump pumps....one was a backup if the other quit. My thoughts...the sump pit looked small and it needs a backup sump.

A roof over the door with carefully sized gutters would divert a lot of that water and keep snow from piling up by the door. That deck needed replacing. Some caulking. The house was in pretty good condition.

That basement door needs a roof over it and a bigger drain grate.

hopefully that discharge line of that pump is routed far enough from the home..... or else the issue won't be resolved!

As a general rule, new homes are going to have a lot fewer problems. But it's important to understand two things. First, fewer problems doesn't mean no problems. And second, there are exceptions to our general rule.

yeah, get to skip all the old house issues(lead/asbestos/entrenched termites/ect) and jump right to cheap ass contractor issues(so many corners cut it's a perfect circle)

Maybe just closing off the staircase with a roof and windows would be cheaper

Mike holmes exaggerates some of these things for tv drama. Wish he just had a RU-vid channel and post his content there

It varies with the job. But, typically, the homeowner pays part of it, and the show pays for the rest. And on shows like this, there is probably going to be some materials and labor donated to reduce the cost. Mike mentions asking the homeowner to pay for a certain portion of it on some of the shows. A good example would be the episode of Holmes on Homes where a contractor was building fences for 50 families. They had each paid the contractor different amounts thus far. Part of the total, the whole amount, etc. Holmes told the families that he would charge each of them the amount the contractor quoted them minus any amount they had already paid him. The show would then pick up the tab for the rest. If I recall correctly, there was another case where the contractor had started work on a home for a family but never finished. Holmes took over the project as the general contractor and worked with the subcontractors who had been previously working on the project. He then charged the homeowner an amount that he felt was fair for the work. Which might have been less than what the contractor had originally quoted them.

If there is one good home inspector in Canada, please stand up ? Seriously start suing the botched inspections, really.

This is not a show about good home inspections. It features all the bad ones. So, it can be biased in that regard. It doesn't necessarily mean that every home inspector is bad. It just means that if they are good, their work is not going to be featured on this show. Likewise, you aren't going to have a Holmes on Homes episode where the homeowner tells Mike how fantastic their contractor was. The episode would be 5 minutes long, because there would be nothing for Mike to do.

@@TerryProthero The inspection reports what the inspector sees TODAY. S/he does not make projections as to service life or likelihood of failure. So if there is no standing water or obvious rot, or the HVAC works properly when tested **today** it does not go into the report. Mold, water stains, decay, and failed equipment that can be seen are what is noted. No defense of the inspectors. There are good ones and bad ones. Just saying what their job is. They will never put down: "replace at earliest opportunity" or similar. They might recommend testing or inspection. But that is on the owner/buyer. I usually do my own inspection, but it is for my own house and I am a licensed contractor. So there is pretty much nothing I'm worried about because, generally, I'm going to tear out and replace almost everything eventually. For my current house in Vegas, however, the inspector was very good and actually recommended repairs and replacements here and there -- but NOT on paper. Verbally.

@@ricoludovici2825 Yeah, there are definitely things that Holmes can find that would not be on a standard report. And he says that himself. At this point, he's now doing a more thorough inspection. But there are so many things right in front of your face that these guys miss that it 's ridiculous. Things that the home buyer could then investigate further if it were noted on the report. That doesn't mean all home inspectors are bad. But it's guaranteed that the worst of them will be featured on this show. Because that's what the show is about. But definitely a good move not to defend these guys. Because I, with no construction experience, could see half the stuff they miss from what I have learned watching a few home improvement shows. Their mistakes are that glaringly obvious. Yeah, don't report standing water you don't see today. But report the huge water mark on the ceiling of the living room, the damaged shingles on the roof, the termite trails on the wall, the electrical outlet across from the bathtub near the floor, etc. etc. etc. (Actual examples from Holmes on Homes and Holmes Inspection.)
