This is the absolute best overview I've seen on this pedal. Thank you for breaking it down into easy to understand manageable pieces.

Clear explanations that are helping me make a decision as to buying the pedal or not. They are expensive but you get what you pay for (usually). Infinite Jets is a mainstay on my board but I can imagine this pedal I would mainly used for recording ambient tracks and have the scope to play around with the intricacies to get the ideal sound for the song.

Thanks! I love it. I had Infinite Jets on my list forever until this dropped, and I had to get it. I actually just finished a gig where I played my synth through it and it did wonders.

I like this review. This old boy is learning along with the rest of us. Cool! These pedals can run into some serious money. I've seen them go for as little as $449 new and as much as $650 used. ..like...WTF?

Thanks for the kind words. For sure, buying pedals of this kind can be nerve racking. How many times did I get some gear in front of me and found it wasn't what I thought. I was going to get Infinite Jets for the longest time, but other reviewers kept telling me to wait for the Microcosm, and I'm glad I did.

I have received mine last week. I am still trying to determine whether the Microcosm looper is influenced by the preset effect selection or whether you can record capture into it and then overdub to a different effect entirely, over the top (and so far I think it's the former - changing the effect will alter the whole effect applied to the recorded microcosm loop as well ..?). I am also trying to determine the best placement for this pedal. i.e. if it goes in your effects chain (after your other delay/reverb pedals, but before your standard looper, i.e Ditto or Boss), it can allow interesting overdubs on a standard sounding background loop. It's like performing with the pedal and a guitar or synth to put layers over a standard loop. However, if you place this pedal as the last pedal (after your standard looper and play a loop or sound from another source into it) it is basically a mixing effects desk which will alter a whole loop/input entirely, and would be good for mixing your standard pre-recorded loop. Final thing, the randomness is rife with possibilities, but to be musical with this, it will take some deep diving and knob tweaking where clock speed and tempos are synchronised.

Awesome, I think you'll love it. And thanks for the questions. In phrase-looper mode, your unit should record up to 60 seconds of your play and the effect, by default. You then can change effect and overdub with a different effect. You must turn the phrase looper on, otherwise you are in Hold Sampler mode. It is with the pre-fx option within the phrase looper menu that allows to have the loop continually feed into the effects, as I do in the video. As for placement, there is a variety of preferences here, but I put it at the end of my chain after my delay, but before my Afterneath reverb (or your reverb of choice). While the onboard reverb is decent, I have others I prefer. So, on my board it goes delay --> Microcosm --> reverb --> Infinity Looper. While Microcosm is a defiantly a looper, it is not a looper in the traditional sense. I wouldn't use it to build out a song, rather I use it to build soundscapes within a track. I'll loop a few bars, let it go, and move on. I have it MIDI clocked to my Moog's BMP so the Microcosm's repeats sync with the synth (quantize mode in the manual). If I don't use synths, then the repeats can be freely manipulated with the knob. The randomness/activity relationship knob interaction is where you'll find the sweet spot, and while you are right it will take a minute, it really is a matter of getting a "feel" for the effect you are using. I might pick 3 or 4 settings and then just master those, and then apply what you learn to others instead of trying to tackle them all at once. Again, thanks for your thoughtful comment. Cheers.

@@FrederickFoxtrott You are right about the looping, it does save and when you change effect you can layer a new one on top. Thanks for your comments, definitely still trying with this pedal!

how do I connect an apollo twin x to the Microcosm pedal in order to get sound ?
@FrederickFoxtrott
@FrederickFoxtrott 2 года назад
Apollo is just an audio interface, right? I’d put your instrument (guitar/synth) into the Microcosm with a normal 1/4” jack, and then a 1/4” cable to the Apollo, which then connects to your favorite DAW via a Thunderbolt cable. Good luck, should come easy.

100% I often have a Count to 5 followed by a Particle followed by an Afterneath on my board, which is a great chain, but Microcosm has it all in one unit and so much more.

it would've been more helpful if you had played various guitar notes and chords rather than the same loop playing in every mode. You can't really get an idea of how dynamic it is when playing single notes and such.
@FrederickFoxtrott
@FrederickFoxtrott 3 года назад
Thanks for the feedback. I thought of that, but then thought others would find it useful to hear each effect on the same notes to get a true sense of the differences between settings. This also cut down on the length of the video, which improves watch times. In light of this, I opted to care more about the true representation of the effect rather than its dynamic range. In retrospect, I am happy I chose to highlight the effects the way I did. I do hope you found other videos that gave you a better sense of the unit’s dynamism though.
