I have actually saw somewhere that if you read a lot of books when young, you are more likely to mispronounce words because you learned them by seeing/reading instead of hearing/being taught them.

Definitely the movie which firmly confirmed Emma Stone's status as a leading lady in the 2010's and beyond. Just like Olive, I was obsessed with 80's teen movies, and how real life didn't seem to work the same way. I quoted random lines, such as "Oh, Burn!" and "My apologies to Mark Twain" whenever I could.

So I think Easy A is homage done right. You can clearly see what they're referencing but it's its own story with interesting dynamic characters. They clearly loved John Hughes and his movies and it honestly did feel like a lost Hughes script was found and modernized. For 'homage' done wrong see Joker, a film that straight lifts plot points and entire scenes from a Scorsese film called "King of Comedy" but the director claims that it and other Scorsese films were 'inspiration' so it's fiiiiine.

I know and use both "homage" by the original meaning, and the second which we re-borrow from French with a slightly modified meaning and pronunciation (seriously we do this constantly, anyone who pooh-poohs this knows nothing about a podcast run by Kevin stroud called History of English Podcast), and it never occurred to me it was the same word. Woof English is a crazy language!

While it's a little unrealistic that seemingly EVERYONE at school would be that obsessed with one girl's sex life, it proved that Emma Stone could headline her own movie, and add more spark to a modern teen flick.

Homage, parody, satire, and pastiche (which you didn't mention, but it fits in with this group) are all distinct things that can but do not have to co-exist. As you talked about here, an homage draws heavy inspiration from earlier works (or just one work), typically resulting in a work that feels very similar to said earlier works. A pastiche will take it further and directly imitate those earlier works (meaning it's actually pretty hard to do pastiche without homage, but the others can exist separately). Parody is when the earlier work is exaggerated or taken to an extreme for comedic effect. Depending on how that's done you might still end up with an homage but you could also go so far with it that the work loses the feel of the original it's parodying and so no longer really feels like an homage (your Scary Movie example being one such instance). And finally satire uses humor to criticize something, which could be done through the vehicle of homage and/or parody, but it doesn't have to be. As an example Enchanted is a movie that is all four of these things at once. It is a homage to classic Disney films, especially the Disney Princess ones, while still retaining it's own story and identity. It also is a pastiche of those films at times, such as the poison apple > true love's kiss plot beat lifted straight from Snow White, down to the size and shape of the bite mark on the apple. It at times moves into full on parody of the other films, like when her singing draws in animal helpers, but being that it happens in New York City, the animals are cockroaches, rats, and pigeons. And it can also dip into satire, such as Robert criticizing Giselle for wanting to marry a guy she's known for one day, pointing out how shallow the romantic connection is between the leads in the earlier films.

They filmed this in my hometown and at my high school a year or so after I graduated, most of the extras are local kids. I created a drinking game with two other friends who had moved to the same city as me. Drink when you see a town landmark, drink when you see someone you know, drink when you see an orange. I became very sick from this game many times. The school is actually called Nordoff but they changed the name because they wanted to incorporate the town name but the school has big N's all over campus

As long as The Final Girls have been brought up, I can't but admit its directors' consistensy in kinda not getting the source material. Although I did like this movie, it's very clear that it doesn't get 80s aestetics and references. Say, the side character of a "80s" slasher mentionned Bon Jovi as a legend, although the fake slasher was set in late 80s, Slippery When Wet barely came out (sic!). Then some early 90s songs were thrown in (wait what?), Paula wears CLEARLY modern hip torn jeans (want some old school in this respect? Watch Whitney Houston's I'm Your Baby Tonight music video, for example)...and there is more and more such as wrong hairstyles and shooting angles. Aestetics matters, otherwise an hommage falls apart.

I feel like the idea of a Pastiche fits in quite well in this video, as it generally referential to previous works, but unlike parodies it celebrates the subject rather than mock it. (First example off the top of my head is Hoodwinked! The early 2000s classic)

I think Friends with Benefits could be categorized more as referential to ideas and actors than homage to specific films or scenes. Like an allegory needs 1-1 comparisons, homage needs specificity in order to be effective. I also agree with you that homage needs to have an actual purpose in the story instead of carelessly being tossed in for relevance or inside jokes.

I think one of the best shows that fully incorporate the art of homage was the show Community. (Besides season 4) Community always made sure that there homage fit in line with the narrative and each characters motivation, a big factor for why their homages work is largely in part with the character Abed, who has study movies and TV so much that he believes that he is a character in a television show.

He is likely to be an older brother's friend, or a friends old brother... or maybe she has to tutor him because if he fails English he'll get kicked off the team. He treats all women like objects until he comes across this one sweet shy girl (most likely a English lit student or a publishing intern) who he is willing to settle down with, but... will also treat like dirt in a whole different overly possessive, stalkerish and psychologically abusive way.
