Maybe she meant biologically (very basic example: men with bigger backs are considered more attractive because of evolution), but even then it doesn't completely apply. What we find naturally beautiful still is very subjected to personal taste
@@PumaArg biologically that's still subjective... beauty is literally always subjective. there's no way around it because human brains are far too varied to have any massive ideologies that everyone will accept at any given point. people don't even all THINK the same way. For example, some people can actually visualize whatever they're thinking about, even if that thing is abstract. Other people literally can't see images in their head. They just... think. And that's hard for people who feel colors to understand. The only thing objective about human sexuality is that it's all subjective.
@@PumaArg no? beauty literally i something cultural, for YOU and YOUR culture men with bigger backs may seem more attractive, but i can assure you that other cultures find other traits a lot more attractive...
@@PumaArg it's funny you say this because the media characters that become internet boyfriends are almost always skinny. Timothy Chalamet, Benedict Cumberbatch, Dylan o Brian, Harry Styles, none of them have broad backs. The things considered more attractive to men are not what women statistically want. Kind like how more women prefer dad-bods to muscles.
watching early reality tv really makes you realize the microaggressions and baby racism towards minorities. Like of course a 6'3 black man is not going to touch or comfort a crying little white girl, a man, in general, would be hesitant to do that
Not to mention that they failed a black woman because she was uncomfortable being approached by a large white man who says "anything can happen in Vegas." JFC if that wasn't staged it probably traumatized her
I want to buy CJ a beer. Shutting down micro-aggressions, calling out producer riggery AND scoffing at beauty being calculable followed by voicing his disgust at the plastic surgery business? In the 2000s? What a guy. Hope he's doing well.
I just kinda wanna point out that there was a little racist moment regarding the "boy" comment, there's a history (dating back to Jim Crow) of southerners using that term against fully grown black men. Depending on the context, such as this one, it can be considered a racial epithet akin to the n-word or other ethnic slurs.
I was 26 and had never heard of that usage when i called a Black coworker “boy” in the same way i called female coworkers “girl”. He knew i wasn’t being racist, explained why it wasn’t okay, and i learned. So i don’t *assume* the one guy meant it in a racist way, but it’s definitely something to take notice of and see if his other behavior supports the racist meaning of the term.
love the acknowledgment of identity and safety when it comes to doing "good" deeds. As a single woman, I'd be pretty scared being approached by a tall, guy way stronger than me who is talking in a weird way and invading my personal space. I also think the show doesn't really differentiate between "niceness" and "goodness." A lot of the smaller tasks like taking a photo for a stranger are "nice" and "polite," but don't automatically make you a good person. They tell me nothing about someone's kindness or moral fiber, because moral fiber doesn't make for solid tv.
yes!! And just generally how outgoing and social someone is. Like no I don't want to make small talk with a creepy stranger how does that make me a bad person
exactly. before julia explained the bit about the "sweaty old man" i was already feeling anxious for the woman who had to be "nice" to him to get a pass
Like CJ was completely right, even if there is a “science” to beauty it’s a socially influenced one based on what society considers beautiful. It’s really weird watching the all white hosts call the only black contestant argumentative too
Ooof, that “boy” moment is fucked. He even put the cartoon southern accent on it. He also specifically knew that out of “boy” and “family” which CJ both complained about which one he needed to change first.
Good point! I'm from the South and know not to use that word to refer to Black men, but I like to give others the benefit of the doubt, but seeing you point this out tells me it probably wasnt a mistake.
The Southerny accent on "boy" was noticeable & caused a reflexive cringe on hearing it, but I would not have picked up on how quickly he changed his statement to just replace "boy" to be less pointedly offensive. That's a hell of an observation to pick up on to really lay out the racism that guy was leaning hard into. Also crazy that the black guy was painted as the show's "chaotic" or even "villainous" role there - at least today would have the benefit of social media to immediately correct a producer-engineered narrative like that.
I would LOVE to see the judges and host let that sweaty random guy give them hugs after hearing him say, "Anything happens in Vegas... 👀" That test was WAY out of line imo. No woman (or man lbr) would feel comfortable in that scenario. Also why would you approach a crying little girl on the street, who you don't know and who doesn't know you??? It's called "stranger danger" for a reason. Call the authorities or something. I mean if the kid was hurt in some way sure, approach them to help, but otherwise you might just end up scaring them more cuz you're a stranger.
let’s talk about the elephant in the room that this show is extremely biased on a racial basis. both outer beauty wise and inner beauty wise. their moral dilemmas are social interactions and minorities obviously have to be more wary of certain interactions.
Oh gosh, reality TV from early 2000s to early 2010s... weird, crazy, and yet better then the crappy reality TV on today - with exceptions of teen mom and crap like that lol 😂
These shows have always made me so paranoid. I'm already pretty shy so people approaching me out of nowhere, or the idea of confronting people makes me pretty uncomfortable. Once on holiday a lady asked me to take a photo of her, but when I had trouble with her camera and asked her to show me how she just yanked it away and stormed off. The early 00s seemed to constantly drill into us that there was one right way to react and one wrong way, which would make you a bad person but in reality there's so many different aspects to consider that you really can't judge people on these fake scenarios
i had no idea what show you were talking about until you showed the jeans freakout moment and then i had a brainblast moment of me watching this show when i was a kid and my mother disapproving of me omg i specifically remember a scene in the second season where i think craig?or billy? (he was in the finale line up with two others) was allowing girls to do body shots off of his belly button??)
Not gonna lie when I saw true beauty I thought of the Korean manhwa turned k-drama I've been reading it since it first came out so it is very much so ingrained in my brain
Oh my gosh…. Daisy is so cute 🥺💕♥️♥️♥️ I bet she gives the best cuddles. Sorry sbxhsjf I love dogs. Love this video, the whole “lost reality shows” topic is one I really enjoy! Jenny Nicholson also has hilarious stuff on a ghost hunting show as well as a reality show about “cave people” and “future people”.
Sending a message that a person should be polite to other person even though he/she is not comfortable with it, or has a bad feeling about it is VERY dangerous. If I was approached by that man with a sentence "everything can happen in Vegas" - like what??
24:11 Being aware of your surroundings could also be interpreted as being nosy. Sometimes it’s better ethically to mind your own business and let other people make their own choices.
I wanted to watch this but I wasn’t allowed because Vanessa Lachey was in it and my older sisters hated her for “what she did to Jessica Simpson” which is funny to think about now but thank you for making this, I can live vicariously about watching it through your hilarity ❤️
Oh my gracious THANK YOU!! I have been waiting for a RU-vidr to talk about this show, I used to think I was the only one who watched, I’m so glad you remembered this!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼
OMG THIS SHOW BROUGHT BACK SO MANY BAD MEMORIES. I was way too young to watch this show but for some unknown reason Star TV (the channel in Vietnam that specifically aired only reality shows from USA) aired this show right after I got home from school. There was this one awkward moment when my dad walked into my room right when they start playing footages of the contestants hanging out at a club. Overall it was the best introduction to "reality" show for me.
The ONLY moment I remember from this show is the pregnant lady one, and that challenge has haunted me for YEARS. Every so often, I just consider that moment and what the "right" thing to do would be!! My mother constantly said it's wrong to question a parents decision what to do with their kids b/c it's none of your business, but she also raised me in an extremely abusive household so I sometimes think 'of course she'd say that, that doesn't make it moral'. But on the other hand there is some truth to it. I don't know why that woman would be smoking. What if she's a recovering drug addict and the only way she could pry herself away from drugs was smoking? And even if an assumption that's she's just selfishly hurting her child for her own enjoyment was true, how would me confronting her change that??? Like genuinely? Me calling this woman out as being a bad person for smoking while pregnant is NOT going to change her worldview? There's no way she doesn't already know smoking is bad for her child, so even taking the charitable route of asking if she's aware what she's doing in the most polite way imaginable would be insulting??? It HAUNTS me.
The jeans thing is so weird. It makes me wonder if the people running the show had somebody steal or move a contestant's jeans any time they needed more conflict.
i was about to comment why did they renew the show for a second season if the catch is that contestants dont know that it's about inner beauty too then i realized all reality shows are fake anyway
I saw 2 episodes of this show years ago and thought I hallucinated it! They were on one after the other and were the one before CJ was eliminated and his elimination. I thought it was utterly ridiculous but felt really bad for CJ!
Julia tell me why our formative years were the exact same… watching reality tv with my mom during the week then grouping around the tv on Saturdays for THE SOUP
