In most homes, 90% or so, you will find some part of the duct system that needs attention. Mostly because of sloppy workmanship. At least that is what I have found in newer neighborhoods where the homes go up fast. Use Air Duct Sealant on nearly every joint and union. Don't worry about it looking good, just get a lot on so it makes a good seal.

Thank you! I have been a little stressed here, and I feel much better watching the video. The builders did not properly attached the upward flow cold air duct to the furnace and there is a two inch or more gap. I will attempt a repair as you demonstrated. I was going to use foam spray, and appreciated your comment on the spray for a large gap!

Sadly HD, Lowes etc doesn't sell air duct sealant here in Canada, and neither does the HVAC supply outlet, so used a moldable epoxy to create a patch over the hole.

Thanks for sharing. This is great. I have a 1/2” gap at the drywall ceiling and the duct interface. Any suggestions to fill the gap? Thanks
@ecospider5
@ecospider5 7 месяцев назад
You can probably use spray foam. Then cut it flush to the wall and use the register cover to hide it. If you can still see it scrape a tiny amount of spray foam away and apply drywall mud. Then sand and paint. Since this was 2 years ago how did you fix it?

Mine corroded at the 90° elbow, but... I have concrete slab with no crawl space and the pipe collapsed, whatever was supposed to be crawl space was filled with sand/dirt and it plugs my pipe... once in a while I use a shop vac, but I wish I could fix it, whatever I can fit my hand in trough the pipe, it's all the access I have to it...
@ecospider5
@ecospider5 7 месяцев назад
I’m hoping to use aluminum tape from the inside. I can reach about 2 feet.
@RomanTrollanski
@RomanTrollanski 7 месяцев назад
@@ecospider5 it is not going to work! I did that, holds fine until you turn on the furnace, heat will make the aluminum tape just coming off, that sticky side doesn't do to well in heat. I was able to fix mine with fiberglass cloth tape and I used liquid membrane (I had some leftover from when I did the shower, it's from Mapei) some other brands should work fine, I used a brush to put in on, one layer before fiberglass tape, a 2nd layer after the fiberglass tape. So far holds very well.
@ecospider5
@ecospider5 7 месяцев назад
@RomanTrollanski 330x Extreme Weather HVAC Foil Tape by Nashua Is good up to 260F. It is $0.50 a meter but you get what you pay for. Yes regular foil tape can’t handle the heat and the glue will fail.

Which specific brand of fibre glass mesh did you purchase? Great vid btw. This awful duct cleaning service I got from online ended up leaving a HUGE square hole in my ducts (about 5 inches both ways!)
@AdamDIY
@AdamDIY 9 лет назад
***** I'm glad you like the video. I have had that mesh for over 25 years. It was from my surfing days when I would repair the dings in my board. I got it from Home Depot in the paint section. It's the same stuff used for boat repair and things like that. Look for it near the resin. The "service" guys you had thought that you would not notice a massive 5" hole? Crazy. I think that when it comes to professions, (electrician, plumber, roofer etc.) the duct workers can get away with doing an awful job when the others can't. If you have bad plumbing work, it's obvious. If you have a bad electrician, your house may burn down or breakers trip; but a bad air duct guy can get away with it because nobody will die, or the house will not be destroyed if he does a bad job. You will just waste a ton of money on heating and cooling. Just my opinion. I have seen so much bad work on my own home and that of my neighbors. I could be wrong, but it looks that way.

You get what you pay for. Spend $0.50 a yard on 330x Extreme Weather HVAC Foil Tape by Nashua and you will be happy. Spend $1 a yard and get their water proof tape for gutters and use it on your ductwork. It is excellent overkill.
