Different countries have different ZigBee frequencies. So they would need to make the hub country specific. I am in Australia.
@Take5Instead4
@Take5Instead4 3 года назад
It seems to be a metal case, good for heat dissipation, no good for any of the "Waves", like WiFi, Zigbee, Zwave and bluetooth, i think. Concerning ZigBee it is often recommended to use a cable of 1 or 2 meters, to avoid interferences of a Dongle (like ConBee II) with USB3. So i think it is a good decision NOT to include RF-Hardware in the case. By the way, there is a new Standard rising: "Thread", something that could replace or combine the others (in the long run).

@3:18 - Exactly. I was really surprised when you stated that the radios aren't installed as I would have thought this is the reason to create this as otherwise this isn't really different than a Pi. Having it all together is one key reason why I got a Hubitat. Having this makes it a little easier for new users I suppose as you don't have to figure out how you are going to set it up on your pc, how to use a Pi, or whatever other device, but it is still a big miss for reducing the initial barrier to entry. They could have at least given you the option to purchase the dongles or at least had a 'officially recommended' list right there when ordering the product. Oh and apparently $140 really means $160...

@@TechTechMoreTech Oh, and in looking, it should be mentioned that this is another 50-100 in dongles cost on top of the box. Movement in a good direction, just not a full step.

I already have a Pi4. But I'm not going to lie. I am a bit jealous of that sharp looking case on the Blue. If HA were to make an officially branded Pi4 case like this I would probably buy it.

It's really easy to add Zigbee and Z-Wave to Home Assistant. The Bluetooth is a little disappointing though. Zigbee and Z-Wave is a lot easier now ( 7 months after this video came out ) Home Assistant has USB automatic detection enabled. You raised some valid points about Home Assistant, but I don't think this is aimed at the same people that will buy SmartThings. Home Assistant Blue is more polished, but still aimed more at people that may buy Home Seer or systems like that using the plug-in / add on architecture instead of an all in one package. I know many people that would be happy just using Tuya products and the Tuya integration in Home Assistant, which will never require Bluetooth, Zigbee or Zwave add-ons to work. Blue may be ideal for those people

The SSD is enough to convince me. I haven't had issues with my Micro SD yet, but why wait. I have HA running in a VM as a backup should I have an issue with the Raspberry Pi, but I prefer the standalone platform.

@HandlesAreDumb_111
@HandlesAreDumb_111 3 года назад
Why and how? I mean... zwave and zigbee are typically handled via usb and most viable options only handle one protocol (that nortek zb/zw stick is supposed to be officially discontinued, for instance). For a device intended to be a HA appliance... I can understand ommiting Bluetooth and WiFi... (my current build is WiFi, pi4/ssd will be ethernet... Wi-Fi was convenient for easing in) but ZB and ZW would be nice... bonus points for external antennas.
@ElliottParkinson
@ElliottParkinson 3 года назад
@@HandlesAreDumb_111 how is a pi zero, pi or other sbc with the zwave or zigbee usb module attached. They then use zigbee2mqtt or zwave2mqtt to convert the protocol to the mqtt which I setup to connect to the server that the HAS setup hosts. The why is to separate the access points from the home assistant setup. If in future I decide to swap my has setup for an alternative, no access point modification required. No new zigbee or zwave network needs to be created pairing all my devices to it again. If an access point dies I don't have to swap out the entire has system. If I want a better faster or upgraded has device I also don't need to worry about the access points. Furthermore, I can put my has server in my boiler cupboard where wireless devices are useless, and put access points in the loft where they get full coverage of the house. There's a lot of advantages to splitting out the brains from the access points themselves.

Thanks for the great review. However I'm glad Z-Wave and Zigbee is not included because putting those radios inside an aluminium box is a terrible idea for performance and would only drive the cost even higher. I would much rather have my own option to provide one of many Zigbee or Z-Wave radios that can be placed outside a metal container and extended via USB cable to allow for best performance and radio reception. I also do not use Zigbee so I would rather not pay additional cost for it's inclusion. I 'm sure non-zwave users don't want to pay extra for that either.
@TechTechMoreTech
@TechTechMoreTech 3 года назад
Thanks! That’s a fair point, since HA is much more DIY focused and for more tech savvy users, it’s not as big of a deal. And certainly if they had wireless radios they’d would have had to make the case plastic.
@EsotericArctos
@EsotericArctos 3 года назад
@@GaborFabian74 The plugin/ add on nature of Home Assistant is ideal for some. If someone is invested say in Philips Hue and has a Hue bridge, they would never use the Zigbee on a hub. Home Assistant can pull the hue bridge in easily. It's aimed at a different segment to what all in one systems are.

The reason it doesn't have build in z-wave/zigbee because they don't want to take away from stick-engineers like conbee/zzh/etc. And I thinkt that's fair.

$140 and still no zigbee or zwave, or Bluetooth for that matter. I can live without wifi because I'd rather have the hub directly connected. Not very competitive. I'd think most people new to the market would opt for a hubitat opposed to this thing. Sounds like they basically just put a pretty case on a raspberry pi and called it a "limited edition". OK marketing strategy I guess, seems like a weird move. I guess they have try to make money in some way. I don't know much about HA except that it's free and has a ton of capabilities but is very complicated for the average user. I'd probably be using it if I were more experienced, and may use it in the future. Not paying that much money for a hub with no radios. Not really even a Hub at that point.
@EsotericArctos
@EsotericArctos 3 года назад
You pay for the Odroid in this case. Home Assistant itself is not really aimed at the person who wants an all in one off the shelf system. It is a hub, as Tuya and many other systems have integrations that will work directly in Home Assistant. If you buy Philips Hue, you have a Hue Bridge and your lights on that, you don't need Zigbee in Home Assistant. Just pull them in with the Hue integration. That is the market Home Assistant caters for. Those who are comfortable adding the plugins they need.

I have the blue and it works great except for the Zigbee usb stick - I had to get a USB extension cord to get the stick away from the SSD on the Odroid. Feels strange to have a 2m cable hanging off the back....

No Zigbee/ Zwave because they don't want the support headache that comes with those protocols... or they want to up-sell you on the paid Alexa / GHome integration, and let those devices handle the wireless integration.

There are many videos which go from their current rasperry pi to the Blue. The blue doesn't come with zwave or zigbee. What about building something better than the Blue? What would that look like?
@TechTechMoreTech
@TechTechMoreTech 3 года назад
The Blue is basically just a Ndroid N2+ (which you can buy off the shelf) with a nice case around it. “Better” would depend on the complexity of your home. If you want to go full overkill, you can run HA on an intel NUC pc in a docket environment and have even more powerful hardware. This is probably only necessary if you have a ton of cameras or something else high bandwidth

@TechTechMoreTech - I picked up the HA Blue (my first HA) & eMMC module adapter combo off a eBay for less than $80 shipped. Can you suggest what USB toggle(s) to get please. It looks like only one Z-Wave & Zigbee combo USB toggle exists (HUSBZB-1, by Nortek) but per searches/research, it's an older device that is running older versions of both Z-Wave & Zigbee technology. I am considering getting: BSEED Zigbee 3.0 USB Bluetooth Gateway, Universal Zigbee USB Gateway for Home Assistant, but then would need to get a 2nd USB toggle for the Z-Wave. I did recently buy an ewelink Smart Zigbee Gateway Wi-Fi Gateway Wireless Smart Bridge that via an ethernet cable connects to my home network. Will HA be able to find that once I get it and connect it to my same home network? Thank you in advance.
