Worked for HD several years ago. Saw some doors (Solid core. full mirror on the back) on a cart, stickered at $10. Looked them up on the computer and that price was correct. Checked out for time, pushed the cart to the the register and bought all of them. Checked back in and asked the manager to explain the mark down. He showed me some pricing schedule and it was supposed to be marked down by $10. Not cost $10. These are $200 doors. But he said the price was done at corporate and cannot be changed in the system. The next morning I went to 3 other HD in the area and picked up more. Some of the other stores did not even have the marked down prices yet, but they rang up for $10 by their sku number. Changed all the doors in my house, the neighbors and my sons homes.

Shopping at Home Depot usually feels like an out of body experience for me. I walk in with a mission, and about 25 minutes into my experience I find myself aimlessly wandering the aisles, starting at 18 versions of the exact same outlet, and realizing I haven't seen anyone who works for the store in a while

When I was building the house, used to go by HD daily; sometimes multiple stores. Bought a Makita grinder for $90; great machine. One time past by the clearance section at HD Campbell, found a brand new Makita grinder in a box for $15; written on the box, "Missing key and blade." Since I already have a key from my previous one, I bought the grinder with the missing key. Two years later, finished the house; past by the same clearance section, this time I found a Makita grinder key and a brand new blade, zip-tied together with a sticker, "$5". I had to laugh out loud. Bought the key and blade and showed it to the wife. She said, You spend way too much time at HD! =D

Walmart clearance gets crazy good deals too. I just bought 5 new tires (various sizes) for $70 out the door. A few of the tires were $5.00 each, the disposal fees were almost as much as the tire! When I showed the receipt at the exit, they couldn't understand what they were seeing. It took a little while to convince them I wasn't stealing the tires.

I tell yea, 3/4 of my shed is filled with wood I got from the cull bin at HD. It's insane the amount of actual good wood I've found in the bin. I'm not talking minor cracks either. There's been instances I've found honest to goodness good wood in the bin. I think one time I got a huge piece of wood meant for steps, looked pristine, and I got it for like 70% off. Went home with a $12 to $15 piece of lumber for like $4.25 after taxes. Some pieces are garbage, but there's some good diamonds in the rough.

I had a piece of Unistrut ring up at $0.10 once. I thought the cashier had failed to scan it among the other stuff I was buying, so I brought it to her attention. We decided to check the price with the manager. He determined that the Unistrut supply was transitioning to a different SKU and that the stock with the old number were supposed to have been pulled out and scrapped. He told me I could grab any other pieces with the old SKU. I ended up leaving with 10 pieces worth $20 each at the time, for $0.01 each.

Just bought an 18 inch Crescent adjustable wrench for a penny. Funny thing is when I was in self check out and I rang it up there was a Home Despot worker behind me ( which I didn't notice ) and she grabbed the wrench and said it was a mistake for 1 penny. I did not argue but just waited around till she put it in a return cart where I grabbed it later and did a sneak check out, for 1cent. I've bought hammers, light bulbs, toilet brushes and Para cord for1 penny in the past. Usually from " lost " misplaced or returned items.

So I went up to the checkout and after I paid for them I realized the total was low. After checking my receipt I saw that they both rung up for .01 each! I was Just at my local Home Depot today and I was buying some larger clamps. I was looking at the DeWalt 50" 600lbs clamp, but they only had one that scanned on the app at $44.47. I decided to grab it even though I usually buy clamps in pairs. While I was scanning everything at self-checkout, it rang up for $0.01! needless to say I then scoured the area looking for more after running that one out to my car. sadly there were no more, but I am stoked to have it. Good clamps are effing expensive!

I had that happen to me just last week. I was in line at the Pro Desk checkout when a Home Depot employee walked up with a handfull of grass rakes and asked, "Anyone wanna buy a rake for 5 bucks? They normally sell for $20." So, I thought that was a good price and took one. After thinking it over for a minute, I decided to take two and everybody behind me took a rake until there were none left. I was kind of smiling to myself thinking I got a good deal, but when the cashier scanned them, they rang up at $.01 each. So, my good deal turned out to be a GREAT deal!...

I had an occasion where my friend purchased a headlamp that was in clearance. He showed it to me and I went to HD the next evening to pick one up. There were three left in the shelf, the regular location where they were located: not in clearance section. I purchased one for around 8 bucks I think. I used it for a couple days and decided I wanted another one for a back-up. I went back and grabbed one off the shelf, leaving one. Went to register and it rang up one cent! I ran back and grabbed the last one. Bought two for two cents! Gave one to my buddy. I still have the two and use them all the time. Husky rechargable LED adjustable...very nice headlamps! I used to go to HD almost daily, just to search for deals. Cull lumber is another good deal. 70% off lumber that has either been returned, OR just doesn't fit in the slot where it is displayed. I've purchased gobs of lumber this way!

Yes! I went to Home Depot one day to buy large plastic storage containers to help in a move. Found three that I wanted but there was no price listed by them. Went to the self checkout register to pay, scanned the containers (which should have been between $8 - 12 I figured) and they rang up for 1-cent each. Asked a store employee about it, she tried scanning it at a different register and said, “Yep! You pay 3-cents.” Didn’t even have to pay tax (which starts on items over 10-cents or something like that). I didn’t even have any change with me; had to break a dollar and got 97-cents change. ☺️

Quite a few years ago I went into Home Depot looking for electrical wire staples (the ones that you hammer in to hold the wire onto the 2x4) and they had a nice plastic box of 10, a bigger cardboard box of 50, and way in the back was a paper bag. Well the paper bag may have had 200 to 300 in it and was the price of two boxes of 10. When I asked the associate in the section if the price on the bag was correct and why; he said that those were the ones that had come from a case that broke open and they just put them into a few paper bags. I was only looking for 30 staples at the time, but years later I still have half the bag. :)

Hey, Scott. I am in the middle of fixing my bathroom. The floor rotted out due to a leak that I didn't know about. Anyway, I decided to due some upgrading and one of the things I needed was a new sink. I wanted to replace my vanity with just a pedestal style sink. I went to home depot to look at their selection. I'm not picky so I'm always on the lookout for deals. I found a basin sink that was marked down to 18.03. It was originally around $130. I had to ask one of the workers about getting a matching base for it and they were out. But there was another clearance sink for 33.03 originally over $160) and the base for it was still in stock. And I heard the lady keep saying "it looks like it has pennied out." I didn't know what she meant at the time but when I got to the checkout, I realized that I got the sink for a penny!!! It was crazy. Thank you giving me the heads up decoding these tags. I will definitely be on the look out for these in the future...

There is another type of clearance tag to look for. It is called a "Green Tag". These are green colored tags, made out of cardstock, a bit larger than an index card and are handwritten. The tags are affixed directly on the product. They typically are on one off special order items like doors and windows, sinks, cabinets, flooring etc. Also sometimes an item is damaged, lets say a drill that may be missing a charger for some reason. On these items it never hurts to ask if they can do better on the price. The returned special orders are a real pain because they don't have a place for them on the shelf. Mostly they live on a shopping cart in the middle of the aisle, so some managers might be willing to play lets make a deal (within reason!!) I used to work in Millwork (Doors and Windows), and we would get approval to set up an endcap if we had a large quantity of returned or mis-ordered doors and windows. Naturally these are very large items and we just wanted them gone! Once they were and the endcap got to be an empty eyesore, the manager would have us put something else there. If you are shopping for items that typically are required to be ordered, never be afraid to ask if they have any clearance / returned special orders they might have laying around.

The penny tag is just an indicator to associates that the item has passed final markdown. A cashier isn't supposed to sell you the item for $0.01. They are supposed to get a manager to mark the item back up to that final clearance price. Some cashier's might just override the price to a penny for customer satisfaction, but it's not a real/valid price. Obviously your experience might differ, but don't expect to get the penny price and don't raise a stink to the cashier if they do their job and mark the price back up.

Thanks for the decoding of the prices. I knew there was an explanation for the numbers somewhere. That'll definitely help me determine when to buy. The prime example being that there is something on the shelf I actually need as opposed to wanting. If there is something I need that has only one or two items on the shelf, it's in the mid cycle of discounting and a reasonably good deal I'll go ahead and purchase it before they're gone. If it's something I only want and/or there are plenty on the shelf I'll wait and monitor the item as I go into HD a lot. When the price drops to the lower discounting then I'll probably purchase.

@Everyday Home Repairs. Thanks for covering this info. It's amazing you found an example where you had all 3 clearance price tags. As you said, the date they put on the clearance stickers never changes. I've seen one that was over a year and a half old (Makita 18V x2 circular saw). The MOD wouldn't make it down even thought it was their store demo (still had a chain and display bracket attached, no blade). A few years ago I was able to get a bunch of extra long #1 and #2 Phillips driver bits and Fein multitool blades for $0.01. I think the main story should be not to get too greedy and trying to catch that falling knife for $0.01 but to see if you're still getting a great deal based upon time on discount and price. Hope you and your family stay safe and well

Before inventory, many stores clean up and tidy up stock areas. So, many old or 'found' items get moved to clearance. I had many $.01 purchases in CREE LED lighting about 4 years ago. My store had inventory management issues and very old stock got thrown on the clearance shelf untagged. Those were the $.01 (plus dust) items I got.

I picked out 8 MDF shelves that were marked down from something like $8@ to something like $2@. At checkout they each rang up for 1¢. I built an entire bookshelf for 8¢ plus about 75¢ for a dowel I used to support the backs. I cut dado slots and made a shelf that was just slotted together.

I paid .01 for 14 (several different sized) cool light smart bulbs. I thought they were about 60% off and would have been happy to pay that price so I was super excited to see .01 ring up! Turns out, there's are a brand that was bought by Phillips and discontinued. They are still supported from a tech perspective though so I'm dang happy! I honestly thought i was going to be paying like $50 for $150 worth of bulbs and paid less than $1!!;

Good discussion! When I know exactly what I want, I go to Home Depot. But when I want to talk to a professional, I go to Lowe's. Lowe's, at least the one near me, usually has some old woodworking/shop pro working in the tool department. I've always received good advice there.

Many years ago, I was in a Home Depot and found a clearanced programable thermostat (this was before "smart" thermostats). It was high on a shelf, shoved all the way in the back covered in dust. I took it to the register and when the guy swiped it, it rang up for one penny. Normally it was a $49 item. He double checked the item and then congratulated me on my bargain! Never happened again.

I bought a 3ft LED light for my furnace room a couple weeks ago. Think it was on sale for about $30 was around $100 regularly. Rang up for 1 cent. They overcharged me for something else so when the lady came back from checking price I told her about light. She told me to just keep it. I tried to be honest but was nice to get a $100 light for free basically.

Thanks for sharing. And, to think that I go to Home Depot often, and have never even paid attention to those clearance sections. Then again, when I shop in general, I typically have the aisle number from the app, and go straight to the item I want, and leave. Never really been one to walk the aisles in any shop. I once purchased a full sized discontinued bathtub for basically 95% off. And the manager threw in the drain fixtures for free since they didn't work with any other tub they carried. This was the last of these tubs in the inventory. It pays to deal with the department manager. With careful purchasing and looking for deals we ended up designing and building (with a contractor) a $20K plus bathroom renovation and total replumb for about $10K. Then within a year we ended up listing and selling the house to downsize and I'm sure the renovation added major $$$ to the price we received at sale end. Over the 14 years we lived in that house we renovated 2 bathrooms, the kitchen, six floor areas (either hardwood or tile replacing vinyl and carpet), Every wall colour in the house not to mention exterior repair, repainting, new eaves and drainage and water lines. A new back deck and retaining walls with both block and treated logs. Also a hot tub and electrical runs to garden lighting and an RV storage area. Most of these I did myself with only the deck, master bath, and some painting being contracted out. Every job I did myself was beyond code requirements and were checked by inspectors and some contractor friends of mine to make sure everything was done correctly. At the time I was working in garage floor installation so the wood floors were not that different from the flooring work I was doing as far as measuring, preparation, fit and finish.

I was looking for 3/4" poly flex pipe for a solar thermal project, found it online at Home Depot for about $55 for 100' . Went to the store, couldn't find much. Employee showed me three spots for poly flex pipe, the third was four 100' rolls of one inch, they had an inch of dust and were way up high , I ended up paying $38 for 400' of 1" poly pipe that wasn't on the website. Must have been a clearance price that was forgotten about.

I worked at HomeDepot for 9 years. The information on this video is correct. The penny items were supposed to have been removed from the floor and taken out of inventory before being destroyed or set aside to be donated to charity. If you bring the item to the cashier, once in a while, if they notice the penny price, they will not allow you to buy the item for a penny. If you call for the store manager and politely demand the penny price with a smile you will likely get it. My advice is to always avoid the cashier. Use self check out when you buy an item that ends on $*.*3. If you do get a penny deal don't start jumping up and down with joy. Once discovered by the cashier or manager an associate will immediately be sent to remove them. Take the item out to your car then come back fin the store for more if there are any.

"Sorry sir, but the $0.01 is a stockkeeping tool, and not an advertised price. Normally I'd be happy to mark this up to the full retail posted on our website if you're willing to pay the $129.98, however we don't know the full reason why vendors pull out items. It could be due to a quality issue or a model update with better safety features, and therefore for your own safety and satisfaction, I have to remove this from the sales floor." (no customer-facing signage nor the website will display the penny price, so there is no legally binding price, and selling penny merchandise under a higher retail under the generic SKU is actually SOP, such as for hazmat that is more expensive to process as hazardous waste than it's worth.)

I work at a home Depot in Pennsylvania as an overnight stock person. I have found quite a few one $0.01 items while stocking shelves and was told by the store manager that if someone was to try to purchase it, they are supposed to be sold at the lowest listed price before the penny price. Pennsylvania has no laws about items having to be sold at the price it is rung up as, I have researched that in other states such as California it has to be sold at the listed price or whatever the register says. I'm sure in PA it could also depend on the clerk.

I went in to buy some 4 x 6 x 16 cca one day, they were all gone. I went up to customer service to ask if they had more outside. They didn't but told me if you can use 12 footers they are only a penny a piece. I made them show me one they computer, they did so I got my trailer and came back and bought like 36 of the for a penny each. I did that in about 2010 and still have some stacked in my garage.

I just started working at Home Depot, The penny inventory thing is still new to me but that is pretty awesome. I do know that sometimes if a customer tries to return an item that went on clearance without a receipt or card look up that the system will say that all we can give them back is the penny. That's fun to explain"Sorry the price for this has dropped down to one penny"🙂

This, works at Walmart as well. Especially for big ticket items. There was a Samsung 75 inch TV that was a display model, no stand but I wall mount everything. It was 1300 markets down to 1000ish. Asked my wife to go speak to the manager and offer them 600. The store associate scoffed and said there's no way they would accept that. The store associate then helped us load it into the car.

I bought a DeWalt jobsite fan for $70, originally $140, marked down to $110 on the clearance shelf. I have got great deals on the more expensive clearance items because they want the item gone. Lots of DeWalt tools for a small fraction of the going rate.
