@southernladyish

col stace lol exactly... weve just recently decided to go with one. Of course the ones were looking at are smaller and come from one of those small business companies and they seem to be cheaper ($9k but biggest one is 12x40 with lofts on both sides) they already include a porch, windows, and tin roof. BUT... then you gotta make it liveable. Flooring, walls, insulation, Sheetrock, kitchenette, bathroom, heating and air unit Etc.... that stuff does not come cheap. If you’re able to get all of those things, they’re perfect! And can be moved anywhere. They’re rent to own as well with no credit check. They’re definitely projects and unless you have all the money right then, it can take months to build on everything to make it liveable.
@colstace2560
@colstace2560 4 года назад
@Maroxa Livesfree true, but there is a lot to do to make it livable. Depending on where you live the weather dictates how you finish it, that being said it's still a better option than a shipping container. There is no perfect building system, you just have to decide what's best for you. 😊👍

Last yr, my son's friend bought this and we wired it for him in a weekend! Elec hot water tank went under the stair landing. Elec Panel was above that with elec service meter on the N end of the building. Circuits went up through upper and lower stair well walls. Toilet, shower, was under stairs, 30" door on rt end. Kitchen cabinets from stair to bathroom door. Wood stove in S. back corner of liv room. Mini/split AC N end, next to elec service. Upstairs big bedroom and sleeper/sofa down stairs for company. His Tuff Shed roof sagged and walls spread after heavy rains! We pulled the walls back in with come-alongs, Bolted steel cables thru the wall headers, next to each roof rafter with turn buckles in the center for adjusting. Then added an L shaped brace above the ceiling and short vertical 2x4's bracing the center ridge. Building wouldn't have passed a framing inspection as-is but the guys who built the kit weren't framers and there was no inspections out in the country... Glad we caught it in the elec rough in stage!

I was born in a tiny home. Mom and and dad had 8 kids 3 bedrooms 1 bath front room kitchen laundry combo. 900 sq ft. Total cost 11K brand new in 1953. I have a real tiny home at the lake 2 beds 1 bath and only 500 sq ft. I use bedrooms for sleeping only and spend day on lake, back double deck and patio. Peacefully backed up to 25 wooded acres approx.

in the 2009 a friend had one of those long sheds on their property and we made a home out of it. It was there for a long time but in Southern Louisiana (Slidell/Covington) they had a '100 yr flood' that decimated the area and well the whole thing was destroyed. Still it showed me what was possible, and we never saw videos like this - we just got creative! Ever since then I am Impressed with videos like this and right now my plan is a van or restore a motor home because I do film making - Then I will get some land as soon as I figure where I want to be (maybe the Pacific Northwest or back to Southern Louisiana). Till then I do have questions and will be learning from your videos!!!

Button smashed! We're hoping to start our conversion on an existing shed in spring of 2022 on our five acres. Our is a 12x20, which is enough footage for us, though we are planning to pop the roof up for more headroom in the lofts. Our biggest issue right now is that we can't find anyone who's converted a 12x20, so we'll be flying blind.

Used to work for Tuff Shed - they are a good company with a great product. They sell them as a shell, and yes, everything else is extra, the idea is you configure they way you want it. Other commentator mentioned code, and yes that is a problem for converting in much of the country, first hurdle is getting a building permit for putting a shed on a piece of land without a residence. They are always permitted as a storeage shed regardless if you plan on converting once up. Before you look into the shed get with the county first to see what they allow.

I'd love to convert the first shed into a dwelling. Unfortunately the snow load here would crush it. Sooner or later, every valley house that's been hauled up here for use as a cabin has ended up with a stove-in roof. If you want a simple, inexpensive, quickly-built shed/garage/dwelling, your choice starts and ends with an A-frame. Otherwise you're using engineered lumber on 6" centers as roof joists and subflooring for roof sheathing.

I love these sorts of projects. I build a 12X20 TuffShed in my backyard for about $3,500, and for an additional $1,500 I finished it out with flooring, insulation, electric, drywall, lighting, head/AC, paint, and a dividing wall that splits the building into two rooms of 10X12. I've been using one half as my year-round office for the last 5 years. The other half is a spare room/storage space. Basically, for about $5K total, I added two fully functional rooms to my house. This was probably the best home-improvement I've ever done. I love it.

The reason you feel the wind is because the roof is not completed. In order to keep the roof from turning into an ice dam you need to have cold air circulating underneath the surface of the roof with the insulation against the ceiling.
@elizabethdippel5586
@elizabethdippel5586 3 года назад
a big reason you can "feel" the winds is because the walls are not 16" on center, its not secured to the ground, no insulation, no drywall, and the windows aren't the same quality as windows in a true home

@InfernosReaper
@InfernosReaper 4 года назад
@@TheProtocol48 Yeah, that's why you've gotta figure out what the local building code is and comply with it, even if the rules are idiotic. The structure itself should be fine, but filling it in will get tricky. Some places require things like "at least 1 room that's 150sq ft" or "approximately 100sq ft minimum for bedrooms." That's why a lot of tiny houses built on land end up having open lofts for bedrooms instead of being built for a full 2 stories. Nevermind that an 8x8 is functional enough for a bedroom. Hell, I have a friend grew up in a 10x5 with part of that space being taken up by a closet and that worked out okay with the help of a futon/bunkbed combo.

The sheds are made of OSB which burns like cotton and sucks up water like a sponge.Trade out the roofing for metal. Install rock wool insulation cuz it don't burn and then drywall it. If they place it on piers they do not have to worry about water damage.

The sway will go away with insulation and sheet rock. I love the 10k one but i would want then side by side with hallway connecting them together on the first floor or even a small 1 floor extension between them but keeping the second floor away from each other. Figured id have to make it my own that way. Butting them together would just be to easy lol

Insulation and sheetrock and a foundation would solve your problem with the house shaking in the wind. Sheetrock adds a considerable amount of stability.

I work for Tuff Shed as an area sales manager and I wanted to explain the prices you were talking about. The poster on the outside is the base price for that type shed and the dimensions of the display. The price of the actual display shed is inside on the big poster. It will have an itemized breakdown. The number where you can reach the sales rep will also be found there. Thank you!

My art studio is a converted tuff shed... so true about trusting the builder- I had some problems with mine (the guy ended up getting fired because he actually stole the job from another employee...he didn’t want to be found out so it was a rushed job, and there were issues with ceiling height and window placing....) anyhow, it’s been my studio for 15 years. I’m very thankful for the convenience of a home studio

If a hurricane/tornado ever destroys my 16'x24' square foot house then I will 100% buy one of these Home Depot Tough Sheds. I would add a front porch and a two story screened in porch on the rear. I would add a composite beam in the rear upper wall to allow the upper rear wall to be all glass and a pair of French doors to walk directly on to the second story screened in porch for the much better elevated view. I would have a open half bath under the stairs with a washer and dry. The kitchen/dinning/living would be downstairs with the full bath with rear wall corner shower upstairs with my bedroom and closet.

The problem with the Shed conversion is that many local governments in the US will not approve the property for someone to live in it. Many of the sheds are not built to the correct housing codes for local cities. If the city won't approve it for occupancy then they won't issue a certificate of occupancy which means that utilities cannot be hooked up nor can someone legally live in the unit. Also, many of the sheds are stamped with a S meaning that they were designed and built only for storage.

The zoning restrictions are what will torpedo this sort of project. I am a bachelor, that larger unit is perfect for me. But I don't think that I would be allowed to build it as a residence. If I could build it on a poured foundation basement that is on a grade that would allow for a basement garage, it would be more than perfect for me.

Attaching the 'shell' to a concrete foundation, attaching a screen enclosed 'wrap around' deck, as well as stabilizing the building with the hurricane straps, added insulation and sheetrock 'might' stabilize the place?
