It seems to me that when Home Free cover these classic songs, they're not trying to copy the original, they're paying tribute to it by taking the song and doing their own best version of it. It doesn't take away from the original to enjoy both. Thank you for another great reaction. Two contrasting suggestions - their mash-up of two country songs, Fishing in the Dark/Boondocks and more recently Dreamer, the original song from their last album, both great in their own way.
Some artist's music you just don't mess with, and yes, I agree that Johnny Cash is one of those artists. But this version is done so..... tastfully, that it deserves to be appreciated.The way they sing every note to perfection.

There's so much going on in these guy's vids that it's had to catch it all, like Adam cocking the gun and the sound of the train rolling down the track. They're incredible.

I have loved this more each time I have heard it. They have total respect for Johnny Cash and showed it in their cover, never trying to do it just the same way. They are so creative about overcoming the lack of instruments that are so important to country music. They do have the human drum kit in Adam Rupp, who was looking a bit deranged thru the entire song, lol.
Hello Gitana, In 1980 I was living in Tennessee about 15 miles from Hendersonville, TN. Where Johnny Cash lived. I have been listening to Johnny's music for over 50 yrs. With that being said, I enjoy listening to another of music. But like you country is in my heart. I came across Johnny's last live performance it was in 2003, he was in a wheel chair but seeing it and watching this man with such class. I thought of you. I loved your reaction to this song! I wanted to mention a few things. They already did a version of "Ring of Fire" and I didn't notice many people say "I liked Johnny's version better." Perhaps that was because it was a greatly shortened version of the song. Next, there WERE some comments on Home Free's version of "The Gambler" by Kenny Rogers, and I had to explain there that it was a song in tribute to Kenny, just as this was a song in tribute to Johnny. Neither of which were meant to be competing versions. I liked these versions, not because they were like or unlike the first heard versions, but because Home Free makes all their covers with their own spin on them (example, Boys 2 Men's "End of the Road"). Also, I often see commenters say "I think the original was better!", when most of the songs and artists they are saying that about are actually covers of songs that were written in the '40s and '50s, or even in the century before the singers they claim originated it sang it (Man of Constant Sorrow comes to mind). Somehow I didn't get to see your feet! Do they have antlers or tiny machine guns on them or something? I suspect they aren't so different from most feet. But at least I am grateful for one thing I learned about them, and that is that they introduced me to a great new phrase, "FEET GOOGLERS"! ROTFLMAO
I always watch the original before watching any reactions so when they say something like “I love that really low note” the way she did after Chance’s first verse, I can say, “Oh, but that wasn’t the really low note!”
Check out their originals too, remember this, whats the world coming to, Dreamer, everything will be ok, and many more. They do covers, but they do so much more than that!

I felt the same way when Home Free created their cover of "Take Me Home Country Roads" just because the original is so classic. But Home Free's cover is fantastic; truly their own creation while staying true enough to the original.

Then it took me another four years total to get to where I could watch it when I want to. It's a very moving song. Kudos to the author. Gitana ! It's Home Free - so u were 100% on point. You have to take their version for what it is....to me it's not Johnny Cash but it's their interpretation of the iconic Cash song. I love Johnny Cash and Folsom Prison Blues is my favourite JC song. In my opinion there is no comparison between his version and this, they are so different, yet I do think that Home Free stays true to the original at the core of their version with Chance's and Tim's leads. Scale the rest of it off and you have Johnny's version. What Home Free did was adding the train going in the background, the train whistle going in the background, the sound effects of trains and shotgun racking and the harmonies. JC's original is a sad song, a song of pain, Home Free's is a song of hope, that down the line that whistle will blow my blues away. The same song, yet so different and both completely brilliant and perfect in their own original ways. I think Johnny Cash would have appreciated the musical artistry of this arrangement. You said what I've tried to articulate so many times! The original will always be the original, but it takes talent to sing it this well by being the instruments at the same time. IN case you didn't know HF's last album Dive Bar Saints has all but two originals so why not do something from their last album? The title song, Dive Bar Saints would be a good start. You may like Lonely Girls World or Love Me Like That. Have you ever heard their Auld Lang Syne?

They're putting out new videos about every two weeks and their RU-vid channel is definitely worth subscribing to. And you're absolutely correct when you say that you have to take the Home Free version as it is, and they do it so well.
First time I heard this, I didn't quite care for it, because the Cash version stood out, but about the third time I heard it, it suddenly dawned on me that this is a prison song, and a train song...and all of the sounds and harmonies sound like a lonesome train. The percussion sounds like train wheels on the track, and the engine, Austin sounds like a mournful train whistle...so did the harmonies on the line "Don't ever play with guns". (sounded like wailing on that whistle as a warning...not to mention Adam cocking the shotgun right after that phrase) So that separated it completely from the Cash version for me and made me appreciate the complexity of the arrangement. As for visually, lmao... Tim looks like the lifer, Austin and Chance are the bad boys, and Adam looks like the guy you don't mess with cause that dude is insane man..and Rob looks like the poor accountant that got caught cooking the books, he doesn't belong with those hard core criminals lol

Hello Gitana -- did not know you were a country fan. If you're feeling adventurous, maybe you could take a detour into modern bluegrass and do Dailey and Vincent Steel Driving Man. Good vocals, but some very impressive instrument work. And well said regarding Home Free and Folsom Prison Blues -- spot on. As for the next Home Free video, I would vote for the Butts Remix, or O Holy Night.
It's a fantastic version, and Mr. Cash's estate still gets paid, and it introduces new people to his music, so it's all good. I hope they do Johnny Cash's "I Walk The Line" that would be awesome too!
