The face you made when Austin chimed in at first was priceless! Loved it! He knocked this one into the stratosphere with his vocals. Yes, Adam is a phenomenal beatboxer/vocal percussionist. He has progressed by leaps and bounds since they won the Sing Off and continues to add effects to his already expansive set of skills! The harmonies were amazing, and Tim holding the bass was awesome! On to your question: I definitely would choose to be smarter than popular!
I think they can go together . I know when I first worked for the National Park Service at Indiana Dunes, I think during training I took the most notes and just retained the information, plus I had a file of notes from college courses in my office. Other rangers would often come to me asking natural history questions, so I don't know that I was THE MOST popular, but I was popular because I was knowledgeable, or if by chance I didn't know the answer, often I could quickly find the answer in my files. So, I wouldn't want to popular for something superficial, but I think one can have a bit of both and maybe that is ;more genuine and satisfying, and probably more enduring.

If I could, I might like to try something else for a change. The original of this song was by Percy Sledge. I agree that this cover is in the same category as Sedge and Bolton. For a quieter rendition, you could check out Art Garfunkel's take. PTX and Voiceplay occasionally use instruments. When they do, they show them plainly. Home Free never uses instruments. However, in some of their newer songs, they use looping onstage (and in the studio). In Man of Constant Sorrow, Chance does the Jaw Harp, and Adam does the regular percussion and then loops that while he does the fake harmonica.

I know this is an old reaction but your reactions are always so wholesome I had to watch it again. It has probably already been said but I'll repeat it- the reason you feel like he is serenading you is that his girlfriend was sitting right off camera and he was singing this to her.
Most of the percussion is Adam, but they all get in on the action from time to time. When they do "Ain't Going Down til the Sun Comes Up" live in concert, Austin helps out with the harmonica sounds, just to amplify it.

This song is a classic by PERCY SLEDGE !! It was just an OK cover by Michael Bolton. Just sayin'. The drums are all Adam, but their sound in the recording is treated like real drums. But it's all vocals.

Percussion is entirely Adam. But on a lot of these studio productions for utmost clarity and work-ability he records individual drum sounds on multiple tracks and then they are layered into the final mix. Not to say he can't sound almost identical to this live though, the guy has a beyond incredible talent.
Percy Sledge performed this right after his girlfriend dumped him. Walking on stage, he told the band to play something and created the song in the moment. They took it to the studio, polished it up, and released a classic song that stands the test of time. You really should hear it...
On Wikipedia Percy Sledge has two versions of the story. It wasn't on stage, but before they were going on stage. After performing their regular gig, they all three worked on it for weeks. At first Percy was angry the song writers got most the credit but later said it was a group project. Most great songs are. Each of the artist's influencers and co-workers usually add something even if it is only a suggestion.
Austin was (and is) an amazing vocalist and this song was a perfect showcase for his talent and hard work. I was glad to see Adam get some notice, that man is a one-man band and a darn good singer on his own. He is such a key part of Home Free’s sound.
Agree, not to take away anything from Percy Sledge he did right it after all and was the first but many times artist perform covers that are better than the original.

Home Free never, ever uses instruments in their group songs. They will if a member makes a solo recording. They only time they have ever used an "instrument" that I know of is when they do Man of Constant Sorrow live. Then they use a "looper" because there is so much going on but everything you hear even with the looper is their voices. If you ever get the chance to attend one of their concerts, GO! You will never ask that question again. Tim has a solo recording of I Can't Help Falling In Love. It really shows his range.
Brains over popularity hands down. This is an iconic Percy Sledge song from the 60's. Percy's opening line blew me away back then. Austin's/ Home Free's version is tops for an A Capella group. Still..........Percy's voice has been burned into my head for 55 yrs and still trumps Home Free, but Kudos to HF. Thx Schnell for your reaction..

Smartest, popularity is an illusion that leaves when it's fickle audience changes. In 15 minutes , 3 days or 10 years popularity may well be gone, but smarts...that stays. Austin's voice is incredible in this performance. Percy is smiling! Adam = one bad beatboxing boy!! This is now my fav of theirs. Ok went back 5 times to hear that ending...wow.

Here Austin's sound makes me think of a cloth falling onto an apple, where other tenors in this range make me feel that they are standing on tippy toes trying to pluck that same apple. He sings this with so much power that you always feel he still has more left in reserve.

Austin has his u tube channel where he does his own music ( since Home Free had to cut short their World Tour because of covid ) Austin has had the time to do some of his own music and NO he's not leaving Home Free... I am generally regarded as the smartest person, in a setting where knowledge is king. What's not to like? Also smart enough to know that added intellect does not mean added value as a human being. We are all God's equally precious children.
Adam Rupp is a 2 time world champ Beatboxer/Loopstation Champ. He Only got better with age. Austin's EX Burned him bad so he has the Soul and Heart to pump into this part.
They all can contribute different sounds...and Adam does use a looper sometimes to layer...but for the most part, Adam does all the percussion...for instance, in the Butts Medley, when Adam is doing the DJ Scratching sounds during the "Baby got back" song, Tim was doing the basic beat boxing, which you can see while he is standing next to Rob and beatboxing into his ear.
Schnell, I LOVE your DRESS. I ALWAYS only wear High Heels and ALWAYS a DRESS or occasionally a Skirt with a cute blouse so I always love when I see other women in any of the same. Yes, it is ADAM although there are others that can contribute with sounds. I was kind of lucky to be able to teach my Math teachers things they didn't know and as head cheerleader I was popular too. I actually had offers for full scholarships to College but I turned them down to stay home to continue taking care of my dad and 4 brothers as my mom passed when I was 14. I had been the family caretaker since her health started declining when I was 9.

I don't know if each person had their own layer or if delicate layers with in offset was used. Those instrumental sounds are legit but since this is music video there is creative license to modify volume, add layers etc. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. The issue arises when people spend money and time to watch simeone perform "live" and they lipsynch. This is not that case.
The female power version of him is SoHyang. "Bridge over troubled water" she does you would think were 2 different singers just listening from her soft to power voice. A tidbit about SoHyang... Sony reached out to her and offered her a contract...... and she told them no. LOL
Yes, Austins voice is perfect for this song !! He can sing anything actually. I was lucky to see Home Free live in concert in Wichita Kansas, We were in the first row and the theater was an older venue with a shorter stage. We were able to be very close to Adam and we could see how hard he works to makes those impressive sounds !!! Amazing to see Adam throat working non stop, I dont know how he is able to keep it up for so long. It was an unbelievablely good concert experience and we are all hoping life gets back to normal soon to they can start touring again.
Austin has the tonality that effects me the same way Morissette natural tone nuances. His falsetto also seems to be a mix, it's too well connected to just be upper head voice/falsetto. I can be wrong.
Adam often multi-tracks his beat boxing, and Tim is also very adept. In fact, all five guys can and have backed him in beat boxing. There's a live version of "9 to 5" where they all do it at once.

It's all vocal, yes, not necessarily only Adam, they all help fill in every now and then, with bass, and percussions, but yeah, Rupp is the main artist behind percussion and rythm (beatboxing)
Percy Sledge, the original on the song would be proud. Never thought anyone could match Percy. Percy Sledge wrote this song on stage after having trouble between him and his girl.
You should check out their performances on The Sing-Off, season 4. Tim does an amazing rendition of I Can't Help Falling in Love With You that showcases his amazing range. He also does a mashup of Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow/Stay that is incredible.
I like how all the women reacting to him fall in love after the first not. I remember when I was young I would sing like this all the time. Yeah in my dreams. Austin killed this song. My wife always tells me that I get these man crushes. The first one was Matthew McConaughey, the second was Henry Cavill. If Austin sees this he will be number three. Wow just Wow.
