Basic home improvements are the name of the game. Thermal insulation and a complete re-wire. Last year we saw amazing results from packing natural wool into our ceiling cavities. Not only was the sound deadening incredible but at least 10°C were retained each night. This essentially means having the heating on for less time per night and for 4 weeks less per year.
When we bought our property, we were given some sizable quotes for very basic re-wires. Luckily, I'm a qualified sparky, so by doing the first fix, we'll have saved many thousands. Once complete, it will be a huge improvement on both the 1940's originals and that we were quoted.
We have allowed for up to 12 electrical outlets per room. A heater outlet, a lighting feed and a data outlet.
Our house can be quite exposed at the top of a 610 meter high hill, this is great in summer but we also see some snow. We've learnt double glazing is a must and but luckily not overly expensive.
The windows and insulation will pay for themselves within a couple years. The electrical re-wiring; although not excessive; will simply make life so much easier and safer.

Have you thought about coating those smoke stains with a PVA solution, let it dry and then plaster. i have used it on a water stain on a ceiling prior to painting and it worked great.

I did same on chimney wall but it did come through after 15 years and thereafter about every 2 years with stain cover paint I think dob and dab insulated plasterboard with foil back might be the permanent way

Builders bum antics, bedside table 'electronic appliances' and banging head boards, lots of giggles and laugh out loud moments thx for that. You're both doing an amazing job. A couple of years ago we had a similar problem with an old chimney wall and on advice we bought proper ready mix fire cement and used that for the area instead of lime plaster and it seems to be doing the job so far. Once applied fire cement needs heat to set of the catalyst for it to set so we used a heat gun to achieve this.

Glad you enjoyed the video, if a builders bum is on show it's classed as fair game!. Thank you for the tip with the fire cement :)

You two always make me smile, but the idea of Mandy taking advantage of what I shall describe as builder's bum had me laughing out loud. With regards to the staining caused by the smoke, have a look at "Not Useless Yet". Different country (Italy) but he had a similar problem when he was trying to render the part of his kitchen that had been a smokehouse. He found a way to deal with the staining.. give it a look, it may help!

You need to batten and board all the walls with insulation to minimise sound and heat loss. You need noggins so you can mount radiators etc on the walls. X

This would be a very quick and easy way of doing it, but then we would lose all the character of the room, the floor and ceiling will be insulated though :)

Hi I watch another vlog where the person is renovating an old French house and he used a product called Renopass Chaux Clair to do the some rendering. It is a lime finish but he found it easy to use and gave a smooth. Don't know if you can get this product but it may help with the panels you are trying to create. Really like your videos.
