He was also covering his own ass. If he had done something to further compromise the house, he could have been on the hook for the entire structural repair. Also without a guarantee that there is no asbestos in the house (spoiler: not guaranteed in the slightest) he would have had to have everything tested and ameliorated before starting work.

This show is far better than the "Extereme home makeover" show because it keeps the base structure of the home, and updates it to be beyond code level and putting in so much awesome work to fix severe code violations and dangers to those that are living there.

Damned right they should. Someone said in another comment that "The word is fraud". if it just takes your money, it's fraud. This is beyond that. This was life threatening. If that basement wall gave way, and/or those floors collapsed on the second floor, while they were in the house? That literally endangers the lives of both of them, and the baby.

I remember this two-parter, and I think it's the one where Mike went to court because the damage and cover-up was so egregious. The contractor who performed the load-bearing wall removal and the inspector who signed off on it should have been held accountable, but as I recall nothing happened to them or they settled out of court. Building codes exist for a reason, folks.

@sabrevanson4412
@sabrevanson4412 11 месяцев назад
My step dad is one of those old perfectionists. He taught me that you dont skimp. Rule of thumb was, would you want poor workmanship in your house? no, then dont do it on someone elses. I see so many newer construction companies cutting corners and just skimping on the job that its insulting and infuriating.
@xephael3485
@xephael3485 10 месяцев назад
They're not perfectionists they're insane... If you compare this house to a car that got keyed in a parking lot, they'd want every body panel removed and replaced with brand new ones instead of just repainting the car. It might even need a whole new frame because of the little rust they detected on the bottom!
@Kholoured
@Kholoured 4 месяца назад
It's human nature and a lack of Christian principles. Everyone wants big bucks but don't want to do it the right way, which cuts into their profit margin. Cutting corners is the new standard. And sadly even code inspectors don't have good morals either. If they are paid by the contractor they turn the check and don't look to hard at it... it's a sad world we live in. Either do it yourself or live with it now. I don't trust strangers to come in and do a good job

Houses have about 100 year shelf life and then they need to be gutted and all the MEPs redone but this house also had bad renovation jobs on top of all the wear and tear. This was an amazing transformation.

As a general contractor I have seen it all. A friend call me one day to help him, needed an inspection of the house, money was tight, so I went over to the house, saw it & why him & his wife love the house. But after what I witness was serious issues with the structure to. Noticed a crack in the plaster above the entrance between the kitchen & living room. What I found, that someone cut the main beam for an extra air vent; went up stairs noticed the gap at the top of the walls, 2"inches. The wiring was to old. I told them to pass it by! He was a happy camper, yet disappointed. Just, I am not a building inspector either, I am just a Contractor with 48yrs of experience, commonsense goes a long way. And I saved my friend from making a big mistake.

@@SandraNelson063 Well; being self taught and working with other contractors over decades it seems. A lot of my prepping in the Trades was in Public Schools. We had wood shop, Motor Shop, Metal Shop. They cut these programs 30yrs ago, they were pushing college. This is where it needs to start right back into Public Schools, job skills. Colleges are a waste of time & money. (Trade Schools) is the wording you needed. (AI) is going to take away every office job in this nation in the next 5-10yrs. Skilled Labor is the only thing left. Plumbing, AC/Heater, Electrician, Finnish Carpenter, OR full contractor carpenter with multiple trades. Full Maintenance Building Contractor ( they take care of buildings like skyscrapers & such)... One of my Contracting friends is teaching in a Trade School. I am retired yet consult.

Because of my bankruptcy, I couldn't do anything for over 10 years. No one would even rent me an apartment. Fraudsters that do this don't give a damn about the damage they do to peoples lives. A big red flag in the old days was the home Inspection was "provided" by the Seller. Of course, the House will be perfect. They want to sell it. Now, in part to Mike's efforts, Home inspectors MUST be Licensed. Just like Plumbers and Electricians. And yes they check "everything", by Law.

But could he set up a litigation cooperation that does NOthing but sue these fake 'inspectors' and renovators that don't properly do their job? There are doctors who serve as a medical malpractice expert witness against other doctors. Mike is no 'doctor' but he IS definitely an Expert in his field. This rebuilt cost around US$300,000 in 2010 according to Holmes. They probably could have built a new house on the same spot for that amount. This was really the worst of the worst. Almost everything had to be rebuilt except for the outside walls and the roof. How can it be that none of the involved builders, engineers, inspectors, real estate agents and previous owners can be held accountable? This is a really messed up system for buyers. Are there no warranties, professional insurances, contract clauses regarding hidden faults, and the basic assurance that the house will not fall down due to structural faults?

$500,000 Reno on a $300,000 house? Previous owners knew they had trouble. Selling the house? Criminal! The inspector? Negligent! The builders? Criminally negligent! The workers on the reno? Probably suffering health issues from the asbestos. Sad!

Who covered the cost of this renovation? This was the most extreme I've seen Holmes do!

The HGTV production company would have paid for a good chunk. Also, a bunch of companies would donate supplies and help. For free advertising and just because they would be disgusted by what the former builders did. Some companies have honor.

Cracking job but cold doesn’t move, it doesn’t exist, just an absence of heat… it’s the heat that moves but hey ho!😅

probably a stupid question but does anyone in these shows get in contact with the people who originally did the work on the houses to hold them accountable or at least make shore they are not still doing shoddy work? I know some of these renovations are a lot of years old but some have to be relatively recent with the companies still in business.

The people who sold this wreck, and all the old tradesmen who did 💩 workmanship on this house should be utterly ashamed of themselves. Whoever signed off on this house to say it was good to live in, should be sued & sacked to ever work again. If this was my house that I’d ist bought and found out it had been worked on by Dodgy Bros Inc, I would be taking someone to court !

Have a Question for as much as had to be renovated wouldn't it have cost less to tear it down and just built a new one in it's place just wondering!

The contractor who did the work should be made to pay for all this extra work and then sent to prison.

I blame the homeowners for most of it anyone with common sense knows you don't have a glass block window in the ground. If there was that much mold you would smell the dampness in the basement. Any person could also see the electric thats not up to code

This is the one case that I wish Mike Holmes had said to the owners that he has bad news and worse news about the house.

Wouldn't it have been cheaper to tear it down and rebuild
