I use double sided carpet tape to hold sandpaper to my sticks. I got to get me some assortment of dowels and make me a few sanding cylinders as that’s brilliant!
Another way is to put masking tape on the wood and back side of the sandpaper and the put super glue on the masking tape on wood and press down . Luthiers ( guitar builders ) do this to hold on templates and when they make sanding stick rather than double sided tape
Hi Mark. I to have been making my own sanding sticks for years using double sided tape. I am certainly going to have a go at using masking tape, I think its a far better idea. Thank you (New subscriber)
Sanding Sticks ,Blocks and sanding Dowels will be needed. So, after checking out some Balsa for my first scratch build. Will see about some pieces to make these sanding blocks from. You don't get much left over from kits for blocks , pieces to make sanding blocks from - it's a wonder you have anything left over to do anything with. Thank You ----- Rodney
Hi Rodney, the sanding sticks are invaluable, but make them from pine or spruce wood, something hard, not balsa, which would bend and break. Good luck, they are rally useful
Hi Ian, thanks for the comment, pleased you liked the VDO. Regarding the blocks, I took a length of 50mm square steel bar to a machine shop and got the to cut and mill the ends square. They are extreamely useful, I use them for so many different tasks
@@MarkRobinson555 Ok fair enough I just saw the wings with no covering so I thought it might be a full restoration etc Also it would be interesting if it was a plane with a bit of love needed its always good to see what experienced modellers like you do and how you do it good luck is it yours or some one else's? thanks
Its is a Messaschmitt BF109 that is made by VQ Models in Vietnam. It was given to me by a friend who didn't want it, and he got it from someone else who had started to work on it previously, so it had had a hard life, and there are quite a few bits missing and damaged. I will get it back flying, but I fancied practicing a few techniques on it, like doing some balsa wing fairings, making a fiberglass cowl and covering it in polyspan and spray painting it. I did think about a series of videos, covering the restoration etc, but it is one of those projects that I will probably work on along side other builds, and also I am in the transition of moving workshops, which adds an additional complication, hence a few videos of the techniques as I go along, as opposed to a series etc. Got a nice Saito 65 to go on it. I appreciate your interest

@@MarkRobinson555 thanks mark for replying, that’s really useful not many people bother, I have to say you’re builds are brilliant, as I am relatively new to the hobby you’ve helped me so much. My only regret is that I didn’t pursue years ago, thanks mate 👍
Great video, Mark. Thanks. Going to make some today. What grades do you typically use? I've started my first balsa plane from plans, Q-Tee, and am really enjoying it.
