Home Made Tilt and Trim Ram for Outboard Engine

Here is my home made tilt and trim ram for my outboard engine.
I decided to make this following an accident which resulted in me losing the pulp at the end of my finger trying to lower the motor down using the antiquated/manual lever system.
Took me 3 days to design and manufacture to suit my 55hp Mariner outboard engine, a simple yet very effective piece of kit that makes life really easy now. - credit to Iveson Engineers

This setup is OK for static TILT function but not for trim; while underway under power the engine is thrusting forward and the ram isn't exerting a force vector to counter that.

Hi it's a single acting ram gravity pulls it down about 3 secounds up or down for reverse the two hooked lugs on the motor catch the frame of the motor as normal works brilliantly the speed up & down helps to avoid the lobster pot ropes
@kobiroar4221
@kobiroar4221 6 лет назад
Not sure about that but the end result was satisfactory, I could clear the prop out of water & get on the plain as well. The new ram without doubt travels all the way but new vid not put on as yet

I have a mariner 75hp.. with manual up and down. The older I get the heavier it gets. I was thinking of doing something similar. In the end it will cost me just south of $1000 to put a real auto trim on it, even if I fabricate it. Im probably better off saving my pennies and buying a more modern outboard that already has power trim on it.
@kobiroar4221
@kobiroar4221 3 года назад
That cost me £125 for the hydraulic pump and a few hours of play time, I’ve since put a lot smaller pump behind the motor

hi there kobiroar, i was wondering if you built the whole system for the tilt and trim from scratch and what do you need to build it all ?

More questions... :) What is the ram made of, stainless steel? What did you make the brackets out of, aluminum? Did you weld them yourself? Why credit to Iveson Engineers, did they do the actual design work? Thanks.

Maybe it's the camera angle , but when in the do wn position it looks like the motor is trimmed out too much. Does the boats bow ride high or porpoise?
@kobiroar4221
@kobiroar4221 7 лет назад
The boat ran fine, but yes the motor did not come down fully and that is why I have re designed it with a new ram that now lets the motor come down all the way, I will be putting a video of these amendments up soon!! thanks
@Harlanmote

And you did it on the cheap too.I paid $500 for a used one for a 40Hp Johnson. 👍
@kobiroar4221
@kobiroar4221 4 года назад
Harlan Mote total cost about £150, the hydraulic pump cost £125. Changed it 18 months later smaller ram and all in stainless as galvanised steel reacts with salt water

Nice work on your tilt piston. I am wondering, before you installed that system, did you have to pull the metal pin/bar out in order to raise your motor, or is there a lever that you can pull somewhere to disengage the "claws" from the pin?
@googleplusisdead
@googleplusisdead 7 лет назад
Generally the latch is only engaged when you are in reverse. When in neutral or forward, they're not hooked.

Hi there like the setup. Where did you source the rams and pumps etc? I have an evinrude 55 and its a pig to lift but the tilts were an optional extrac and are like hens teeth. Thanks
@googleplusisdead
@googleplusisdead 7 лет назад
I'd like to know where you got the ram, pump, and switch. How do you lower the unit, use the down button and if so, what does that do, just open a valve to let the fluid return? Is that a huge oil reservoir next to the pump? Does it really need to be that big? Thanks.
@russg1801

Ernest Berzai. Hi the brackets in the video where made of galvanised mild steel the ram was 6o mm o/d with a 125mm lift, everything was made in my workshop. I'm in the process of a new vid where everything is c/o to 316 stainless steel smaller ram which is positioned higher up under the engine and generally all lighter & more compact.

How long did it take you to realise it doesn't trim down far enough?
@frankcrapanzano7229
@frankcrapanzano7229 3 года назад
About as long as it took you, to not realize (not realise), that it clearly does go down far enough. Didn't you realize that if the motor came down far enough to latch properly to the locking bar at any position, that it obviously does come down far enough. His method requires quite a bit of metal fabricating skills to fully accomplish. But is a great idea. If you can do it better, please share with us and show us your method.
@martyadams3915
@martyadams3915 5 месяцев назад
Makes sense that if it latches it comes down far enough. I do see where and why this poster might think it doesn't come down far enough though. Videography can be deceiving especially when it comes down to exacts such as mechanics.
@jacquespoirier9071
@jacquespoirier9071 9 лет назад
it seems to work more like a damper than a trim system I wish that you covered your fabricated parts with a good paint as they seem to be steel and if so, you'll experiment an heavy corrosion issue .
