Very nice, I like the taper you put on the end of it. I plan on making one or two of these for my projects out of pallet scraps. I might make one out of pine and one out of oak so I can have a soft and hard wood version for different uses.
Good build. This is the first video I have watched where the builder glues four pieces together with the necessary angle before making the head. Chopping a mortise seems to be too hard for me. And I plan on using different wood species anyway. Probably Siberian Elm, from a windfallen tree and walnut for the center for a varying color. I'll also probably drill out some of one side to put some lead shot for extra heft, too. Thanks for the ideas.
if you're worried about the wedge shapes cracking, drill a small hole at the bottom of the cut. It does make the part where the wedge bits are attached to the rest of the handle a little thinner, but it also makes it kinda springy and when assembled it's just as strong and you won't see the holes any more than you'd see the splits you cut
Very nicely done my friend, loved the video so much subbed you. Keep up the fun videos and have a blessed week. Told thew wife I was going to make one this weekend, I figure all I need is a band saw, Table Saw, welder and a lathe and I would be ini business, hehehe, she just laughed
Excellent technique in assembling and making of wooden mallet, but I personally prefer to have additional 15 cm to 20 cm longer handle to have less load on the wrest.
+Siamak Lighvani Thanks! I did make a similar one with a longer handle just like you mentioned for my brother. He does metal work and wanted a mallet that could hit a lot harder with and wouldn't mar his work.
+Joseph Hutton Thanks! I've really gotten a lot of use out of it already and it has held up really well considering how I abuse it. Here's the dimensions: The handle is 7.25" long and 2.25" wide right at the part under the head and 7/8" at the thickest parts. The head is 6.5" long x 2.25" x 2.375" but the head is tapered to prevent pieces from chipping off.I really didn't plan for these specific sizes, but rather just used scrap pieces to make it. The handle was just sized to fit my palm, so I'd recommend taking it down to what feels right for your grip. More than fretting about the the size, I'd recommend using the heaviest (dense) wood for the head that you can find.
