Welcome to Make My Space Work - a series where Shopify, in partnership with home decor expert Alexandra Gater, gift entrepreneurs with makeovers to make their spaces more functional and beautiful.
Would you find working in a confined space with your desk just inches away from your bed effective? This was the dilemma social entrepreneur Kim Kirton found herself in. She literally had no separation between her work and rest spaces. She found that her 9-to-5 and 5-to-9 were blending into one. In this episode, Kim asks for Alexandra Gater's help to create some division between her work and life. This is an extra challenging feat since Kim shares her apartment with two roommates. However, Alexandra has a clever idea to give Kim the space she desires that involves ditching the bedroom office all together. How will ALexandra solve Kim's cramped work set up? I don't love the light fixture, personally, but I like the idea of a more textural light in this design. It adds interest but is still neutral.

Awe, I really wanted to see the bedroom too. I was like oohhh we are getting a two for one...and then we it was just the office. BUT wow the office turned out really amazing and the light had grown on me...the only part I don't like is the way the straw kind flips out at the end, but the feel of it fits the room for sure.

I know a lot of people aren't a fan of the light fixture but I kind of like it lol It reminds me of a beachy vibe and feels like she brought an outside island vibe inside. Which is a nice touch I would enjoy. Being surrounded by everyday modern and being stuck inside I would enjoy the beachy vibe!

I really liked the end result. Trimming the hanging lamp shade made all the difference - I can't say I love it, but I did think it added texture to the space.

It’s funny, when you see the light fixture from the door, I understand everyone who says they don’t like it. But when you showed the other angle looking out to the couch area, it makes total sense. It goes with the artsy, boho, eclectic vibe.

I like the light fixture, but not in that space, at least not the office half of the space. It looks like it belongs in a beach hut and it blocks all the stuff in the background. I think it would be nice on the living side of the space. Either way, great transformation!

I actually like the light! It’s “light” and airy and acts as a bit of a statement piece that suits the space! I probably would have chosen a rhipsalis or string of pearls for the hanging plants though as they are a brighter green and would have contrasted with the wall nicer😍

Love the space but don’t love the light fixture. I would go for a more “see through” solution that didn’t cover the beautiful hanging plants... maybe a glass or smoked glass or even a loose knotted macrame would be quiet nice. Big hugs ❤️ Julia

This is my favourite make my space work so far. I was unsure about the ceiling light fixture at first, but above the desk, it works, because in that way, it doesn't obstruct movement or view.

Great job! It’s basically such a nasty room - it looks like some cheaply- built extension - and this has transformed it. I like the light fixture too! I think it works for the office of an artistic and creative person like Kim.

If i saw the light in the store i probably wont like it, but it was perfect for the space, i was waiting for you to trim a bit loool i noticed you didn't mention the budget, maybe because people give such hard comments about it, but in the same time you utilized 90% of what they had, and that's awesome. I always moved, I independently studied home decor since I was 12. I wish I had a coffee table book of all my places, from my houses, to my single rooms, to my basement suites, to my apartments. I love this space, it brings back memories of my 20's! Such a fun creative time for people

Love the texture the light brought into the wood! Think it tied in well with the wood detailing on the accent wall too. Brought a bit of a boho vibe to a room that could otherwise come across as a bit cold without the plants and other homey touches like that!

Aside from the light fixture, everything else about this room is just brilliant. I can't believe how well the space was utilised, especially the actual office space and where the desk was put a I would have never thought about putting it there..... it all looked incredible and so professional yet stylish.

Great room transformation. We utilize all of our spaces. Repurposed dining room to sewing/embroidery area. Lounge-reading space right next to it with all of my supplies in enclosed bookcases. Redid adult daughter's former room with movie and game watching capability, a treadmill and serger sewing machine. Basement has full workout room. Every square inch has a useful purpose.

I really love how you fixed so many issues with the space and made it look totally different. The blind for the bathroom window is perfect as is the mood board covering the hideous electrical panel. I loved both the "office" side and the lounge side. There're so many great ideas in this one video for what can seem like an awkward space. Plus you really put Kim into it. 2 things I would change are the overhead light (looks like a tiki hut, not an office), & would have painted the desktop & mood board a solid white to match other furniture & blend into walls. But love everything else💕

Honestly the light in this space is like a cousin to *the* Alexandra Gator light 😂 I think it's a fine light but I can understand how some people might not like it. It's kinda like the same vibe as *the* light but stylized slightly differently and I appreciate the variety of different style options within the same style family :3

Apart from the light fixture, this is a great makeover. As soon as I saw the fixture, my instinct was the same as Alexandra's. Get the scissors! But also it is too long and low into the space. The scale seems off. And also, it doesn't seem like a professional touch. It is more "day at the beach" vibe. It is surprising how the contrasting trim on the windows helped the space and the white shade too and definitely covering the electrical box. Love the placement of the couch and the separation the rug gives. Love the baskets in the storage unit and how much better it looks not covered in wine bottles. Love the plants in the space and that you put her screen prints on the wall. Great job.

My office was in my bedroom too. But I bought a nice stand up or sit down desk and it’s in my living room now. Getting it out of my bedroom made a huge impact fort me mentally!

I enjoyed this makeover. The lighting choice is definitely unique but I like it for that space. It definitely gives a lot of personality and adds texture in a relatively neutral space. You see pops of color here and there but it’s all cohesive! Great Job! And I know Kim loves her space because you managed to personalize it for her
