Both of these homes are depressing for different reasons. Danielle’s looks a decaying dystopian psych ward and the Ace Family’s looks like a void, clinical hellscape of hollow furniture. This was fun!
So on point!!! I was trying to figure out why the first home seemed so familiar to me, it's the same style as every therapist's office I've ever been to lmao
As annoying as she is, she isn't wrong. The chairs were designed by Jeanneret as a modern interpretation of traditionalal Indian pieces for Punjab University. The original chairs got lost to the elite furniture collectors of the world and very few remain in Punjab.
Regarding the lime wash “trend”: I’m Italian and since I was a child all the houses I lived in were full lime wash. It’s something that is always been classic and it’s hard for me to see it as a trend, but more as a classic. I feel what makes it a trend is probably the fact that she lives in a super modern American building and not a little Italian townhouse 😅
I agree. I’m not Italian but I definitely think the lime wash/ plaster look is classic! There are certain looks that aren’t going anywhere, and that is one of them.
I think the lime wash will always be classic in Italy. It is a very traditional wall treatment that was used because of the access to materials and the local craftsmen. It will always look natural there because it is in its “native environment”. It has no connection or history to NYC apartments. The whole thing was faked. She put in a fake wall to cover a brick wall so she could do a fake wall treatment. If she had just left the brick exposed I think it would have achieved what she was attempting to do. It would have given the room that great warm brick color with all that wonderful natural texture. And it wouldn’t have looked so out of place because the brick is more traditional to the area. It seems that all faux painting techniques just go out of style and fairly quickly, too. I remember back in the 2000s when Trading Spaces was on the air and I think every episode had another stupid faux painting technique. A lot of them were cheap and simple to do so we all convinced ourselves that it looked awesome and we all did it and we quickly realized how horrible it was. This is just orange arches all over again.
honestly, both of these made me sad. conspicuous consumption hellscapes where one is so 'tasteful' it totally lacks taste and professes wabi sabi but has a huge room full of shelves and shelves of clothes and then the other is completely devoid of taste, character, interest...anything all amidst a cringey performative tour (that painting of the wife?omg wtf was that). both I'm sure cost millions but look cheap. and I won't even get into the respective 'businesses' of both..... but yet. they're famous and rich. what a world.
She mentions wabi sabi inspiration, but It doesn't seem like she understands what that truly means. She took a trend and ran wild with it, this will not age well. Some of her pieces are quite nice but by putting it all together at once it feels flat and overdone. Additionally, I can't gleam any unique personality from her space, elements that feel special and reflective of the individuals that live there, there is nothing there that is interesting in that way. The other house... performative is the perfect word for that. They feel so so inauthentic, and it reads more that they care about perceived status and showing how expensive their home looks rather than real people that live there humbly.
@@amandaelynch1 definitely! "wabi sabi" seems to be the new "rustic" linguistically, since the latter has fallen out of favor, of course wabi sabi means so much more and almost always misused
Honestly I was kind of into the lime wash technique at one point until I saw Danielle’s apartment tour and how tacky it was that it turned me away from it lol also… she lives in Soho, a neighborhood that is historically industrial, I feel like covering up the brick walls is a disgrace. Her apartment doesn’t reflect the place it’s in.
I used to work at Anthropologie one summer and every employee talked like Danielle. I was waiting to hear their “real voices” for MONTHS and slowly realized, oh my… they don’t stop.
I like Danielle’s furniture and decor but the limewash makes everything seem dark and dingy. It’s crazy how dark her apartment seemed with all those windows while filming in the middle of the day.
And she put a lime wash wall over a brick wall?!?! If it were me I’d be keeping those brick walls and using those hella height beams to hang me a hammock chair. Live your best life yo!
Daniel’s home could be amazing if it wasn’t all one style. I would love the green wall in the bedroom if that closet wasn’t also limewash. The space is supposed to be calm but it has so much textured your eyes can’t rest.
If you look up Danielle’s old apartment you’ll see exactly how heavily she relies on trends over her own taste. *Queue palm leaf wallpaper, shiny gold accents, and hot pink neon sign*. How she is so famous, I do not understand.
she's from money and used that to leverage her way into becoming an blogger back when street style was taking off, later pivoting to general fashion influencer, starting a brand that copies small designers, anything is possible when you're rich
The Ace Family & Danielle Bernstein are the worst of American consumerism, arrogance, and narcissism. Disgusting. I bet the Ace couple doesn't last much longer. Sort of creepy. Loved your choices of people to review Paige and enjoyed it.
I had never heard of this Danielle girl…. But I can honestly say I hate her more then the Ace family. She wreaks of self entitlement. She really thinks she’s something special. Picked that up in 2.5 seconds. Yuck. These type of people are so out of touch with reality.
your channel is so refreshing! finally someone in interiors with taste on the tube! also appreciate that you have strong opinions -- people do not seem to like having them on this site.
I feel the same way. It is very refreshing to not see a greasy youtube performance, I can count on her to be super authentic and real, like the kind of person us on the other end of the screen would probably hang out with, not a person that performs for their brand on youtube.
I love how hearing her opinions, even when I don't agree! She's so refreshing. And most RU-vidrs won't make a video before doing a full face of makeup and hair perfectly styled.
i heard that that lime wall is a legit extra wall (because it's a rental). so the brick is still there and the lime wall is basically like a set in front of it. so paige wasn't far off in her commentary.
Ace family home looks like it belongs on the Sims. I honestly enjoy a lot of elements in Danielle’s home. Love the shade of green in her bedroom, love the birthing bar stools she had. Very unique! (though Im with you that they don’t look comfy) once they mentioned Georgia Okeefe it suddenly clicked why they made some of the decisions they did. Like the weird fake fireplace...in a real adobe home something like that makes sense and would be beautiful. It’s just one of those situations where you can’t replicate the authentic thing. I feel like even the overkill of lime-wash was an attempt to get as close as she could to the beautiful and subtle textures of white adobe walls.
Conspiracy theory: The Ace family IS living in an airbnb or furnished rental, they were just able to bring over a couple of their own pieces. Danielle's home has some amazing elements, but it is overdone. Everything is "special" so nothing is special. And too much brown/tan/biege and limewash.
I believe DB turned the main bedroom into a business-focused closet to write off a large % of the expense of the home. It is also well-documented in the video in case there are tax challenges in the future
I would imagine it has very similar rules to owner write offs where you write off the % of the mortgage that correlates to the % used for "business" and it really helps to have a door because that space cannot have another use. But you would have to look at tax code to be sure.
@@wasselpa if you're renting a space and use a room "exclusively" for business, you can claim that % of your rent AND utilities (sq footage of room / sq footage of house or apartment) as a business expense, typically a home office or studio
@@wordswithkay it's such a bummer for people that work from home: unless you own your business or are a contract employee you can't write off your space/equipment! It was a huuuuge thing the first tax year after the pandemic started. If I recall, you used to be able to write it off and it was changed.
Never mind the interior design, which is hideous, but the self absorption of these so called influencers is stupefying. It really makes me fear for the future of this world!
To my mind, both sets of people are not so much odd as thoroughly repulsive. The shallowness and entitlement is actually breath-taking. I agree that Danielle Bernstein’s house is generally better, but that’s not saying much. (And those light fixtures over the dining room table remind me of those felted cat bed caves.) Yeah, I just disliked all the people involved so much it’s hard for me to be objective about their homes.
your weird feelings around family vloggers are spot on - they’re essentially relying on the cuteness of their kids (who can’t really fully consent to being on camera all the time) to pay all the bills and i can’t imagine the effect that has on the kids. 😢 also WOW i hate the lime wash too!!!! too dusty!!!!
The whole blogging business is really sick, you don't get to live the moments, because you must record them. It's even worse with families, yes. TBH it is very annoying that this trash makes these people rich, because people don't watch quality stuff instead of peeking into others life.
Hopefully they will get a lot of money when they turn 18. But I have feeling the parents just spent it all. I don't think I'd mind being exploited on RU-vid if it made me rich.
the dining table definitely came with the Ace family house and the tour definitely end because the other rooms are either empty or a mismatch between house value and the quality of things filling it. clear a lesson to observe here, a mortgage that stretches your budget firmly into "house poor" vs a much smaller mortgage to be able to furnish your house comfortablely
I appreciate the Axel VerVoordt vibe, I do agree the limewash was overdone. To make a Master Bedroom into a closet seems hypocritical to me for someone going for a minimalist aesthetic. Arvin Olano would look better in her blouse. The Ace family... Meh.
Combination of wood ceilings with limewash is beautiful but I totally agree! If it was left at that and combined with cozy non trendy furniture it would be beautiful. This is just rich trendy knockoff
Considering most of the interior is just a failed Axel Vervoordt rip off I can't imagine her decorator contributing much, just check out his spaces, especially the Greenwich Hotel
Word on the street (and by that I mean the gossip is out) on how the Ace family was never legally allowed to live in their home because it was a SHOW home for filming only. The "landlord" was in multiple videos of theirs at least prior, but he specifically had all of that in the house lease documents and the Ace family moved in anyway and is trying to blame it on someone other than themselves as if they didn't blatantly ignore all this.
Her home looks like a cave, which is so odd considering you can see brick apartments through the window. Must feel like a trip walking from a regular elevator/hallway into that apartment...
Paige you’re so good at pointing out what and why is wrong or right in home decor. Thank you for sharing your insights. I’m in your tribe for sure. I love second hand, I love quality and I love individuality and cozy. Keep up these videos! I can’t wait for your channel to reach a million🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
The kilm style rug is literally available everywhere, worldwide. They are extremely common. I myself have three that size and they are no big deal. And I seriously despise that lighting over the dining table. Big ugly mishaped chunks of paper clay. Did the artist use Das air dry modeling clay? They look like the inspiration has come straight from a Flintstones cartoon. Her whole style lacks depth, completely lacks personality and will date very easily.
Danielle’s bedroom looks claustrophobic especially when it’s all one color. Totally agree that the closet should be in the bedroom. The master looks like it may have gotten good natural. Her current bedroom looks like a walk in panic attack.
I think I will have to go with the Ace family, if for no other reason than they seem to really like and enjoy their bordering-on-tacky-omg-we've-crossed-the-border-into-tacky aesthetic. They embrace what they like because they actually seem to like it. DB, on the other hand, is a cloying, pretentious, twit who would smear cow shit on her walls if someone told her it was on-trend and hip. She doesn't have things because she genuinely likes them, she has them because of how they make her appear to other people.
this was such a fun video. Bernsteins home has some really cool pieces; things i'd fist-fight someone for LOL but holy sh*t did she ever overdo it with the "wabi-sabi" vibe. i just really hate when people describe their interior as wabi-sabi when they're just sourcing luxury pieces for thousands of dollars when wabi sabi is about up-cycling what you have and embracing imperfection. but rich people gonna be rich. as for the Ace family, this was my first time even hearing about them and i can say with confidence that i don't wanna see any content from them ever again
But the ace family is so sad in the sense SO many people want to live like them but there house is so plain, cold, devoid of life. Like it’s wild there are rally people out there that have nothing inside and nothing in there house to match
Your are so right on your design! I love how you know exactly what is missing in a home or is needed. You are so spot on Paige - I love your design mind. These RU-vidr channels are strange and definitely need more style. Only thing that was missing is your sweet Goo.🐶. Happy Holidays 🥃🥳♥️
I actually like limewash in small doses, but this is overkill! Paige, could you react to Vanessa Hudgens house tour? I really enjoyed her space, I think you would like it!
Hilarious that Danielle name checks Axel Vervoordt when she is the ultimate consumer and clearly doesn't understand his intentions with his personal style or interiors that he designs
the limewash looks like that 90s/early 2000s textured walls (in any way you can diy) trend that just feels tacky and dank. it looks like a set for a movie where they had to make the room look aged but couldn't film on location so they made a really inauthentic reproduction. though i stand by the fact that it wouldn't be near as bad is she didn't do the doors too. that was a massive error
I would love if you reviewed the homes in desperate housewives. I started watching it again recently and even though it was filmed years ago the houses look almost timeless especially Bree’s. So, just a thought
Omgosh leave the lime wash to little villas in exotic destinations- Bali, Santorini etc... it never looks good on plaster board in a high rise building!!!
I don't hate the limewash at all. I would just loose the added hollow thing under the TV wall + some furniture and accesories, like the sculptural lights over the dining table.. Some items look like they belong to much larger space! I get claustrophobic vibes from her place.
Personally I actually like DB's house, it suits people like her and I have similar taste. But then I remember she makes money stealing from small artists and no amount of interior design can make her classy.
Love your videos and critiques! I think you’d have some fun reviewing Home & Garden’s home tours, they have a lot of funky patterns, colours and antiques, definitely the opposite of trendy so it could be fun to contrast👍 Grateful for your content 🙌
“Oh, hi, husband! I just got out of the shower and you want to do a home tour? Well, of course! I’m not at all annoyed by that!” This is so staged… like they have a cameraman there lol.
I have fantasized about applying lime wash walls in my semi modern San Francisco home. After watching Danielle’s apartment I realize how ridiculous it looks trying to bring Italy country home to a city home. Thank you Danielle and Paige for the video! 😅
Geez Gal.. I watched all of your content. yes I’m officially a fan now. Never even thought I am that much interested in interior design. But damn, i hate those barn doors and fricking arch things now as I know them too. Cant wait for the next video. You are a gem 😎
Oh my god! Hearing people use food adjectives (delicious, yummy, tasty, etc…) to describe home decor is the equivalent of someone smacking their food and saying “mmm, so MOIST”… It literally triggers my gag reflex!
hi Paige! love your videos and your style! you should review Taylor hill's home if you get a chance, its very traditional and boho at the same time and would love to hear your thoughts (and roast) :)))
yo I'm moving into my first rental house next school year in my college town and the paint is atrocious. you should make a video about how to style with bold wall colors or something like that.... maybe styling rentals? I'm an interior design major and I'm struggling lol
I don't know if you've seen Liv Tyler's AD home tour since it's one of the older ones, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on it! Definitely a very different vibe from the homes of these people lol
You should react to some of the homes in the In Residence and My Place series on Nowness. It focuses a lot more on artists', designers', architects' (etc) homes. It's beautifully produced and you'll definitely see new stuff
Could you please make a video where you just talk about couches/sofas and what to buy, how to look at the color, material, width length, how to set them in your house, how to style it etc. And then you can do this with beds, closets, lamps etc!!!! thank you :)
