It's actually pretty great what you get for the money with these. The very similar mini version of these (but without the expansion possibilities) are much more popular and cost pretty much the same or even more (!). I have found these with NVME drives already in them for pretty much the same as the minipc's with SATA SSD's or HD's... Next one I add to my homelab might be this!

I just got one of these myself a few days ago, just like what you have here except it's a i5-8500 cpu. I plan to use it for Blue Iris and Homeseer, and maybe even as my plex server.

Awesome! They really are great for a home server. It would be awesome for Plex or Jellyfin since you can just throw as much storage as you need at it. :)

I recently got a G3 mini to run my docker lab and replace my dead NAS. 32Gb ram and i5-6500T are totally awesome for my needs. I will probably get another one for backups (currently using a macmini 2014 for those). I love how small and silent they are. I wish I could get a G4 for the extra nvme slot, but they are 100 bucks more expensive. And I kinda miss the 3.5" bays, but TBH SSDs are getting cheap, and it's probably time for me to manage my data hoarding issues

Congrats on the 💯 video🙌. Nice pick up, I have something similar (Dell Precision T3600 Workstation) I would recommend getting a HBA card for storage expansion and the SFF can get quite warm inside, if you do decide to get a HBA card make sure it is in i.t mode👍. Keep up the awesome content dude.

If you have not found out yet. The covered slot on the front is for the optional SD card reader. If you dont need the DVD drive. The OS drive in a DVD adapter caddie, is the perfect place for the OS. Which leaves the two HDD, SSD and NVME slots available.

Pairing with new Zotax RTX 3050 LP (Low Profile) is super good budget gaming A few days ago , I just purchased the same PC with an i7 8700 and 16GB of RAM for approximately $135, and a new Zotac RTX 3050 LP for around $150.

I bought one of these with an i5-6500 a couple of months ago to use as a dedicated Plex server. It lives under the TV in the living room and unless you get up right next to it, it's completely silent. I chose this over the mini because it could take the 8 TB media drive out of the older server. Since it's under the TV, I'm probably going to set it up for some retro gaming too.

Great vid! Question for you as I have been toying with this idea for well over a year now. Any recommendations for any other SFF (Small Form Factor) OEM Prebuilt PCs other than the HP ProDesk and EliteDesk series? I have heard good things about Fujitsu and Leonovo Thinkcentres, but I am not sure if they can at least get two 3.5" HDDs into them like these systems can. I completely agree with you that these systems are likely the best when you consider 2 nvme m.2 slots, the PCIE slot availability, and that you could technically get three 3.5" HDDs into this thing if you ditch the optical (maybe even more if you 3D print an even more optimal drive-rack for 3.5" drives). Looking forward to your reply boss!
@Techdox
@Techdox Месяц назад
Glad you enjoyed it. Yeah the Thinkcentres are great but only have the one storage option most of the time of a single Nvme drive. Not bad of you just get a decent sized drive though

I've got 2 spare 3.5 inch drives, and very limited physical space so these old PCs would get me thrown out of my apartment. Would you go zimaboard and Sata to 3.5 inch drives (found a 3d printed rack for the two drives). I want to learn from building a NAS for those two drives, and I want to run home assistant, as well as test out something like nextcloud
@Techdox
@Techdox 6 месяцев назад
A Zimaboard and the two drives would work just fine, you could also look into a raspberry pi with a case that supports the drives as well and could work out cheaper
@erbartlett
@erbartlett 6 месяцев назад
Can the raspberry pi do sata to those 3.5 inch drives? I looked and didn’t find any way to do this that wasn’t through usb? I considered that option before and only afterwards started looking at the Zina
@Techdox
@Techdox 6 месяцев назад
@@erbartlett By default it can't but you can get expansion boards or cases that can, for example the Argon NAS case - argon40.com/products/argon-eon-pi-nas
@erbartlett
@erbartlett 6 месяцев назад
@@Techdox i guess i also thought that usb wasn’t going to be as reliable as something like sata? And I’ve read things like omv or unpaid had trouble with stuff over usb? I was basically looking for the smallest / simplest setup to be able to fiddle with these different tools. Then, if i liked it, and didn’t find the setup / maintenance too painful I’d probably build a much bigger 6 or 8 drive array in a much more powerful setup. Love the video btw!
@Techdox
@Techdox 6 месяцев назад
Yeah in this case, I think you can't go wrong with a Zimaboard, they are just a bit pricey for the specs @@erbartlett

I'm thinking of getting the same model but with the i5-7500. How many internal hard drives can you attach? So there's 1 slot for NVMe, and does it have 4 SATA ports? Thanks
@Techdox
@Techdox 10 месяцев назад
Two SATA ports, well three if you disconnect the DVD drive, but really only room for two SSDs and the NVMe
@ernestgalvan9037
@ernestgalvan9037 8 месяцев назад
@@Techdox… for more SATA ports, try a PCIe -> SATA adapter. Also, I have seen ‘WiFi’ port to SATA adaptors. There is a RU-vid video on ‘what else a WiFi port is good for’. Of course, PSU may be a limit. The G4 model has room for two 3.5” drives and two 2.5” drives and the optical, yet only has three SATA ports. But it does have the dual NVMe ports!

@ernestgalvan9037
@ernestgalvan9037 Месяц назад
This model tray CAN accept 2 x 3.5” drives, no need to remove anything. You may or may not need the double SATA power splitter, mine came with the machine … I have one exactly like this one. Dual 12TB 3.5” HDD Dual NVMe (one 512GB for boot, one 512GB for cache for the two HDD’s) 2.5” 512GB SATA for misc mass storage.. just because 64GB RAM because… well just because… Added the optional front-mount SD card reader. Soon I will swap out the CPU cooler for a Noctua, but this requires case surgery. Great machine.

@Techdox Is the $300 NZD price tag including the SSDs you bought? Because I just bought the same model, but used on ebay for $50 USD (about $85 NZD). A quick look around confirms that the average price for them near me is less than $100 USD ($165 NZD)
@ernestgalvan9037
@ernestgalvan9037 8 месяцев назад
@@jamesdavis1917… one’s location is VERY dependent on what is available . Just because “average price NEAR ME” is less than $100, Mr Techdox may not be so lucky on “average price NEAR HIM”. And shipping to HIS location may be (will be) exhorbitant. Example, I picked up a ‘bare-bones’ G3 SFF for $45 shipped, then just two weeks ago lucked out on a ‘bare-bones’ G4 SFF for the same $45. I have also picked up a lot of four ‘bare-bones’ G3 65w USFF for $40 shipped (all four). ‘Local’ supply is everything.

You'd be kind of hard pressed to make an sff PC build for the price, mini itx motherboards, sff psus and cases generally cost quite a bit more than standard microatx or ATX sized hardware with the same featureset
