Home Surveillance Installation - Lorex 8-channel HD DVR

In this video, I help SuperMom Jen install a six-camera Lorex surveillance system from Costco. Since it's her house, I give her the dirty job of crawling around the attic while I climb the ladder outside to run the video cables.

This is, hands down, one of the best security camera system installation videos I have seen yet and I've been looking at similar videos for over a year. I'm actually still researching my camera/system options. The only one thing that would have made this video better, is if we could have seen what your neighbor was seeing (from her point of view) as you fed the fishline up to the attic & when the cable ends were being fed up to her. None the less, I THANK YOU for taking the time to make this video. You & your neighbor are awesome!

She saw the fish tape with the cable ends tied to them, what else would she be seeing? Just look for something moving and grab it.

Great video, I have installed dozens of systems and my only advice is instead of purchasing 100ft extra video/power cables with the fat head bnc connectors on them purchase 500ft spool of RG6+Power Siamese Cable integrated. You can hardwire it all together in the end plus it has no connectors obstructing the entry holes, much easier you can get a 500 ft spool for like 60$ online. Cheaper and easier, just get a few 12V female connectors for the end of the power cords and some rg6 cable end connectors/bnc connectors. You can buy them also online for like 5 or 10$ for 50. Save money and you will have all this extra to do additional cameras or other installations. Great camera placement btw to get all corners of the residence.

If you just close your eyes and listen it doesn't take much imagination for this story to go a whole other way. I know a couple folks have mentioned as much but, I concur. Sorry Chris...Jen is the star on this one, buddy. Far as I'm concerned, she earned her Oscar simply flipping that insulation back. Holy moly!

Should make another video applying 3m security film to all those lower windows. Tying up the garage door emergency release handle with a zip tie. Putting 3in screws in the strike plates on the doors. Or thorny Rose's around the electric meter. Good video . I enjoyed the use of mutable camera angles while doing the install. Look forward to seeing your next video.

Awesome setup, only thing I would add is a camera on the front door at head height. The camera at the front door is easily avoidable if you walk to the door via the grass with your hoodie up, keeping the back of your head to it. If an intruder sees a camera looking directly at their face they most likely won't risk it.

Chris, after viewing your ZMODO video years ago, I installed my own. Couple of lessons I learned recently when some rotten teenagers ended up at our house for a party. They messed with the system. Lesson 1: Lock up the DVR. In fact, hide it and lock it. Lesson 2: Cameras that can be reached by standing on fence (there's one in the video) can be dorked with by determined teenagers. Put it up higher on the edge. Lesson 3: Do not host teenage parties. Thanks.
@n8trsho

+Chris Heider I used one of those metal utility boxes (similar to circuit breaker boxes) and put a lock on it. I think Jen could probably put a lock on the cabinet as a "quick fix." Anything to make it difficult for a burglar to take the recorder. ~Steve

+Chris Heider You're right. I think I read somewhere the "average" thief spends less than 5 minutes and usually heads right to the bedroom (where the jewelry is). Like you, I have cameras, signs, safes, alarms. I like to over-do it when it comes to security and realized my dvr was too accessible during that party. ~Steve

It appears Jen would not be interested in crawling about in my attic, so I'm running the wires through the basement then up under the vinyl siding. I have a full basement. If I had to crawl I would do it in the attic. I suggest a 12 gauge pump action shot gun loaded with magnum 00 buck rounds to compliment the system. Eliminate the problem.

Just word of advise, go hardwired cameras and avoid wireless models, most especially those that are unencrypted otherwise I can intercept the signal and see everything it sees. Any professional burgular is going to have a Wireless/Bluetooth jammer which blocks the frequency used by these cameras essentially making them useless.

Nice video..I found this while doing some research for my system. This is not a Power Over Ethernet (POE) system, so I was wondering how you powered the cameras, does the power brick for the dvr also power the cameras? Just a couple points, the camera resolution is important..those costco lorex units don't always have the best resolution, the distance of those cameras from points of entry in the back yard will record the intrusion but not facial features and the dvr location is too accessible and not secure..easily removed by the intruders.

Does Lorex have software to run their DVR/NVR software directly on your main computer monitor or do you have to have an independent standalone monitor for the DVR/NVR? Basically I have 2 monitors for my home office setup and I would like to use my second monitor for work purposes such as email and calculations when needed, but when not needed have my security cameras up and running. Is there a way to make the second monitor dual purpose? Either with some sort of HDMI switch or running Lorex software from my PC?

Chris, I have this same kit. Question each camera has a 110v plug-in. So it’s a 8 camera system. Are you having to plug in each camera into a 110 plug? So I have to have 8 110 v plugs by my DVR? That seem like too much and I would have to use a power strip. Or does just one bring power in for all cameras??
@handydadtv
@handydadtv 5 лет назад
I hate using all those “wall wart” power supplies for each camera! So I had Jen buy a 12V 10-amp power supply to power all the cameras and the DVR. The only risk is this becomes a single point of failure. If it dies, everything shuts off. But I prefer the simplicity.

I don’t know any surveillance system that records 30 FPS. And you don’t need it. It would bloat your recordings and your hard drive would have less capacity. These aren’t home movies. You don’t need 30 frames to see what’s going on.
