Home Swap | Rabbits & Guinea Pigs
Some very big updated to share today! All seems to be going well so far, and they all seem to be content with these changes. I discussed a few reasons for making the change in the video, but wanted to go more in depth here. So the first reason for making this change is due to the guinea pig hutches not being ideal - they worked well for a while, however I recently found out that lots of moisture was building up in the hutches overnight, and we couldn’t add anymore air holes/ventilation because then they would be too cold. They also had to be separated overnight as the hutches could only house 2-3 piggies overnight. Plus, they were not very spacious, so they didn’t have a big space at night. The big hutch is much more spacious and can contain all the guinea pigs, whilst having much better ventilation. The next reason for making the change is because during the Spring next year I plan on moving the two indoor sows outdoors, and that means they need to have plenty of space during the day and night. We have been having an issue with the outdoor rabbit aviary because they found an escape point, and we couldn’t mesh everywhere due to certain plant roots, and the actual logistics of being able to fully mesh the area is almost impossible. Now we are able to mesh the new area if necessary. We always said that the guinea pigs require more indoor space, and the rabbits need more outdoor space (as they don’t use much indoor space), therefore we figured this change would work well for all of them. So far it seems lots better, and also much more convenient for me as the guinea pigs just stay in one place, and I don’t have to keep moving them from one area to another, and all their supplies are closer together which is very useful at this time of the year. The shed was originally bought for the guinea pigs, along with the hutch & aviary, though we moved the bunnies in here because they needed more room. Now they have the large outdoor pen which means they are able to have lots of outdoor space like before.
