I worked in community support with adults with severe mental illness. Here's my tips: 1. Use a tracker app on work cell to track activity with other community support staff members. 2. Always put important non-work items in back seat with tinted windows and under seat. 3. Don't meet people in basements (had a client renting one) or far in their house unless you are comfortable with the individual, then always be closest to the exit. 4. Any clients who had sexual crimes or a history of dangerous behaviors you meet in public places and never in the home. 5. Any time you don't feel comfortable, feel threatened, or simply get a "gut feeling" something is wrong, excuse yourself and leave. Your safety is most important. If it's a situation you feel is dangerous, call 911. Wait in car, doors locked. Seek supervision immediately after.

I work for an Early Head Start and conducting home visits is part of our performance standards. When I do home visits, I always take a teacher with me, and once I've actually called a family to schedule a home visit, I will put the date, time, and address of the home visit in my Outlook calendar and include the teacher who will be going with me on the home visit, and my supervisor, in that event, so that at least 1 other person besides me and the teacher knows where I will be at during the time of the home visit. I also verbally let someone at my job know that I'm leaving for a home visit, and I text my supervisor after I've left a home visit so that she knows that we are no longer at the person's house and that we are safe. Like you said, home visits are not always going to be welcoming. I've done home visits where I suspected a partner was being abusive to his SO, where I've sat on the bed of a client because that family's house was so unkempt that we couldn't sit in the living room, and I've done a home visit on the front porch because we were not invited inside, presumably because the family was uncomfortable with us being inside their house (we had concerns about this family's hygienic standards). Finally, whenever I enter the family's home, I make eye contact and introduce myself and explain my role, and give a handshake. I also ask if it's okay for us to sit on their couch before just sitting down.

I am having trouble finding internships in my area any advice? As a case-worker I have done home visits and I typically always bring my cell-phone, and park in the street that was great advice as my client's typically do live in low-income areas where the area may not be the greatest. I always let my supervisor know where I was going, and texted them when I was finished as well for safety. If I ever felt unsafe or had an issue I would call them as well.

Not really the same thing but just like you keep saying keep the phone with you, I used to show apartments in buildings and at least 2 people always worked. We each had a walkie talkie. Never show an apt w out outside communication

Surprise you didn't cell the client and make sure the client home safe and get the information before visiting or that might be an Australian thing.

Don't you feel your client would feel like their space is invaded if you put a video of their house/neighborhood on youtube? Love what you do but it feels like it might be unethical practice to me.
