Home Weather Station ...on a boat 

I have an Ambient system and I love it. One of the best features is the ability to attach other sensors to it and set text alerts. I have temperature sensors for my freezers, soil moisture sensors for my plants and air quality sensors for indoor and outdoor. It even has a lightning sensor to pick up strikes within ~10 miles. Many of those sensors have text alerts so I can get warned there is something that needs my attention. There are other alert channels too, so if you are the home automation type you can send an alert to a home assistant device and have it take some kind of action (turn on sprinklers, for example). Highly recommended. P.S. since you have Starlink already you should get the weather cam option, then drop the Ambient ID so we can all see what the weather is doing where you are at.

Hello from little Kansas. Been watching for years and wanted to say we have the same weather station. It’s great and the batteries on the station last a long time. We’re on our second year with it and the battery still shows a full charge.

Hi Doug On the wind direction, A suggestion North=the bow of Seeker so East 90deg will be starbourd and South 180deg will be wind over the stern....Just wondering if that can work?

If you point the weather wane “north” direction towards the bow then you will have a rough direction baseline on the wind direction as to where your boat is facing ie if the meter show winds going to “north” you know your ship has winds directly from stern and so forth.

I have that same model of weather station. I have owned it now for several years and it is still performing well. I think you will like it.

Wind direction is easy. As you stand at the wheel, directly ahead is North, East is 90 Deg right, West is 90 Deg left and South is back over your shoulder. (The human compensation method) When it reads wind is NNE, it means it is just off the starboard bow.(Which ever way you are sailing)

You could make a mount for the weather station that has a motor in it to turn it based on compass data from something else in your boat such that the weather station is always pointed north and gives you back useful wind direction?

Good morning Seeker. I was anchored about half mile east of you when that blow hit, 40 gusting 60 for 30-45 minutes, very strange. I only dragged about 100 ft, so I got that going for me.

After all of the naysayers, look at you now, Doug. What awesome progress. Every time I saw some 'expert' on Reddit say you couldn't do something, you did it anyway, and proved them wrong. Excuse my French, but f-#% 'em. lol

I design weather stations for offshore oil rigs. Gotta say, that's a nice sensor package for the price point. Location looks good too. Might get some weird readings if the wind hits the mast from the right direction, but it will sort itself out once the ship weathervanes. What I've seen on those cup and vane wind sensors is the bearing will either corrode, or get clogged up with salt if it's a plastic plain bearing. You'll be able to see it start happening if you watch the cups in moderate winds. It will take a couple years, but at that point I figure you've gotten your money's worth. The load cell precipitation gauges are great as long as there's not too much back to back rain.

I wonder if there’s a way to calibrate the wind direction to the heading of the boat.

I just set my weather station up right before tropical storm Aghon blew thru. Almost 4 inches of rain. It’s been in a box for 4 years waiting patiently. Miso is the name. Chinese clone of what the scientific American model looks like. Opened the rain gage and there’s a seesaw inside that catches drops and when it’s full it tilts and dumps then the other end catches drops back and forth ticking off 1/100 of an inch. It connects to the internet but by usb cable only. Yours is a bit more sophisticated.

Mount two coils whose center line goes through the sensor for wind direction and aligns with hull. Use fine wire and many turns so current draw is small. Experiment to find how many turns to over ride the earth's magnetic field. Permanent magnets would also work.

People would like to be part of your adventure and have something made on your ship by YOU , of your ship … and turn them into. A. Clock even . inscribed on the bottom. ..Seek and you shall find In your life time.. …. They would make a GREAT piece to hang on ANYBODYS. wall. .. live long and prosper while your at it ….LOL.

installed that same weather gouge and made north forward. Its a backup if the masthead instruments fail.

I bought a vevor and I love the thing. Mine has solar for the sending unit. And it is under $100.00!

Sacrificial weather station. If it gets hit by lightning, you only lose the weather station. It's more likely that the lightning will just go down the mast, though, since it is a giant metal pole going into the water via the hull and sacrificial anodes.
