My late father got me hooked on following Mike, family, and crew when I lived in Thorold, Ont. I'm back in the US. But I still love his ethics, insight, and the way he details exactly what the problems are and why.

We lived in a house that developed a dead animal/fishy smell. It turned out to be two breakers that were melting on the back side. We were lucky that we did not have an electrical fire.

Mike needs to have a training school. He should come up with the test that contractors should have to pass to be certified.

Even though these are 14 years old now, it still shows great work ethic and how "standards/ code" are actually really low everywhere

I've watched Mike's shows over the yrs and I love what he and his crew does. Hes probably the most caring and honest contractor theres ever been or will be. Him n Damon have done some amazing fixes and you know when they leave, hes made everything right. Thank you Mike and everyone on your crew for doin it right and fixing what others have half-assed and keep making it right

Damon works really hard, and great that he instructs along the way. The team don't just do, but they know why they do the work, the way it is done.

Man as an ex construction worker myself , I just love watching this. I only worked in this area of the industry a couple of times. I was most on towers (condo buildings) but I do miss the work!!! Watching the concrete part reminds me from a site I flagged on and we did 1,400 metre pour!!! If it wasn't for injuries from a car accident I'd still be in construction

Just found this channel a couple days ago and I'm enjoying each episode. Kudos to the incredible crew for their expertise and hard work. It's great that the show supports the homeowners to make their home safe, properly built and beautiful.

Has any law enforcement agency ever addressed the crime of realtors bribing home inspectors to ignore big problems (lie) so as not to kill a sale? Having bought a several homes over the years I am convinced that this happens many thousands of times a day.

I was so fortunate when I bought my current house, my daughter’s father in law was a builder and knew the house very well. Best house I’ve lived in apart from my parents place. It’s such a relief after having houses with multiple soul destroying problems.

WOW ! I bet there are more comments here than on any subject on the internet. I think the largest part of the blame lies with state, county or local building inspectors. I completed a 4 -year state apprentice in plumbing here in Las Vegas, and it sickened me to see this bad construction. Many foremen would say "it only has to last a year" (when the subcontractors liability ends)..

We bought a house that's 13 years old. We had all of the ductwork cleaned and there was so much junk in it: toys, wood chunks, nails, etc. The guy got 50 lbs of stuff out of the ducts. It's amazing how much difference it's made as far as how often I have to dust the furniture. I think it's helped with my allergies, too. We had an inspector that the bank recommended (where I live the bank won't issue a mortgage if a house hasn't been inspected). The guy didn't notice that the furnace was on its last legs and the air conditioner compressor was rusted. We had to replace both of them--$13K. We probably wouldn't have bought the house if we'd known they were about to break down. There are sash windows that won't stay up so we have to prop them open with sticks. The oven isn't calibrated correctly. None of these things were found by the inspector. It was very frustrating, but fortunately (knock on wood) there are no problems with the plumbing and electrical work. The people we bought the house from didn't reveal in the declaration form that these things weren't working. It was very maddening.

I had no idea that clay can stink so bad when it gets wet! I know in my mother's backyard if you dug down a few feet you hit clay - but it was covered by nice rich black soil. I guess that is why it never stunk? But these shows are so eye opening! These places can look so pretty on the surface but have so many issues under all the pretty surface stuff. And in some cases the place is actually rotten too. Its also amazing how you guys can cut massive holes in a floor but at the end the floor looks perfect + so shiny!

Always seems if you can look at a house in the winter. It's the best way to tell if there is leaks, drafts, mold build up etc. About the only thing you might miss out on is landscaping, as snow could cover a bad yard. But at least you'd know if the roof leaked, the furnace was broken, drafts etc.

It's so rewarding watching Mike Holmes videos, especially the home inspection shows. It, once again, makes me so happy that we had the best home inspector. Our guy never misses anything. He may not be a Mike Holmes but he's the best locally which is why I enjoy watching Mike so much. Knowing the quality jobs our guy does helps me appreciate Mike Holmes that much more. What a champion for the home owner.

This is the 3th video I see about this Series and I wonder... Did they never go to one of those "inspectors" and ask them why they did not signal anything, etc?

I sure learn a lot from these episodes. This one: how to tile the wall, and how a proper crawl space should be done. The electrical, as well, with the separate wiring for DW, oven, etc. We live in a house built in 1979, and we are dealing with some old type electrical boxes for the outlets, and we are going, one at a time, replacing them. So much to learn! Thanks for another great video!

I've watched Mike Holmes and crew for years as well. Never fails to impress that they ALL get down and dirty and work their butts off.

I've watched him for years. If I ever hire someone, it would be him to build my house.

This show always reminds me of when a house my family moved into had a plumbing issue we couldn't figure out. We called up the best rated guys in the area to come look at it and the guy in charge started going to town mocking the work of whoever did the job. Going so far as to say it was all not up to code and poorly done, clearly by an amateur. My mom was clearly upset and the guy starting figures out at her to give a quote. It was something like 25k cuz all of it apparently needed to be redone and had said its a shame there was no info as to who did the work so that she could take em to court for ding such a poor job. Unlike his team which always leaves a "work done by card" attached to the systems to give them some accountability in the future. Just as he says his i see out of the corner of my eye, a business card sized attached to a pipe. I point it out saying "Like that one?" Guy lights up and trots over to talk more smack. This is when me him and my mom notice the logo on the card is the one on his shirt and clipboard. My mom and I look at him with my mom saying "well... looks like we know who to take to court for such a bad job." Guy quickly left saying he'd have to look more into the job. Turns out everything was done right and up to code, better than code actually. Ended up just needing to replace a t-fitting that had failed. If i wasn't there my family woulda been so screwed outta a shitton of money.

This is about 20 years old. I'd love to see where they are now❤

It would seem strange to me that inspectors, are not qualified and certified, they should also have professional qualifications, and indemnity insurance, responsibility for there report accuracy, and quality of the advice provided.

Wish we had someone like Mike and his crew in Mississippi! Sure could use them!

It should be US law that Mike Holmes must personally inspect all new home additions. I wish he had inspected an addition on one of my homes years ago that literally had to be demolished and re-done.

Comment #2: this episode mentioned something about the idea of each thing being on its own line or circuit. With the electrical. And you was wondering how that got goofed up in this house. Well some houses have tons of stuff on one circuit. The majority of stuff in my mother's house was on 2 circuits. The majority of the first floor (lights + outlets) plus the furnace + a bit of the basement was on 1 circuit. Everytime the furnace clicked on the lights would dim. The house was freezing cold but huge heating bills. I think this episode shows it was more than just drafts. Down in the basement, many of the rooms had dirt floors. Then the old wooden walls met the dirt. Never had termites though. But the house was freezing + tons of mousture issues. I believe there was an underground stream under the house too. But many old houses have tons of stuff on one circuit. Its how they were wired back in the day. So you cannot presume that each outlet or light is its own circuit.

I used to watch Mike and his crews years ago in Holmes on homes program..hes a big inspiration to me in construction and home fixi g projects i get into.also many years experienced in home construction industry ..trades...i do work for lots of labdlords mits have botched up wirk from handymen over the years or contractors who cut corners too.i just redid a omumbing issue in first fl bathroombc it was all ran incorectly.and thn whete it tied into seafw line stack in the building itcwaz way out of line from it it keaned outwards with se etal pipe connections tying i tnto it.pkus a luve electic junction box directly against toilet waste pipe...live wires left in a wall not capped or even cut off at junction box since it wasnt used anymore..

I have a new home and my front room is cold and heat isn't really blowing. The floors getting closer to the exterior of the house gets colder. Did have windows fixed to minimize wind from coming in but I feel that the wall of the windows is not properly insulated. Would love a camera to see the temp and ideas on what I can do to get the builder to relook at the wall for better insulation.

We need men like Mike in every county in the USA. So many bad contractors who don’t know what they’re doing or just don’t care about the customer and only care about get in, get out, get paid, and no concern for doing it right

That's funny, my Father had a custom sunroom added to the plans for a duplex/townhome he built new in 1998. The sunroom was essentially 3/4 windows but was always cold. It had NO crawl space access from the main basement either. The other odd thing is that it had 2 sliding doors - one from the living room to the sunroom and the other from the sunroom to the outdoors. Why would anyone add a sunroom that could be closed off from the main structure? That made no sense in my mind.

When i bought my home 5 years ago i hired a home inspector who spent about 4 hours to do the inspection. But he brought in a license plumber and electrician to do their inspections. Everything was good except for 2 arc fault breakers that fail under ventilation on the roof

I always find it hard to believe that in Canada and America your downpipes only go down to your backyard. It only creates problems to your foundations and extra water in the yard. In Australia and New Zealand we have to run it all into pipes that lead to the stormwater drains - taking it completely away from any foundations and stops flooding in the yard

Why can't you sue these incompetent inspectors. I read about Oregon law and it looks like you cannot personally be compensated from their incompetence. The state can find them and or take their license away but that looks to be about it, is that true ?

One of the key signs of the quality of the kitchen addition work was the trash and garbage left under the addition flooring. There’s no excuse for that. None!

Been a minute since I've seen any of his shows. For a while it was "Holmes gone fishing"

Tiling is actually pretty damn hard job to do right. I see constantly pros fuck it up since you need to pay attention not only that it attaches properly on the base material and that there is zero air gap behind it since that leads to potential cracking of the tile if it gets impact from say knife or fork falling on it. Best way to find out if this was done properly is to give it a knock. If it sounds hollow, that tile was installed incorrectly, keep this in mind when looking apartment, keep the tilers honest and give it a knock. I have absolutely nothing to be afraid being on the trade since if its ok for me, then its ok to anyone. Shitty tradesman other hand is royally screwed with average quality i see. Other thing that makes it difficult and to pay attention is the debt difference between tiles, well as the corners aligning with each other. Most people including my old teacher say you dont need run string or spacers while laying floor tiles and that is just for the walls, but i do that everywhere, since that gives me those crisp lines that vary at the worst 1mm so i can put my attention into getting them leveled. Only issue i run into is that sometimes those that build the house it self didnt make best quality work or house has lives so its not straight and level from the get go. In these cases you need to decide if you go level, or by the largest straight surface. I often go half way between the two. It hides relatively well its not plumb, but at the same time it does not look crooked when comparing to rest of the house. That is if you are not going to redo every other surface in near future and straighten them up as well that is. Its difficult to say from the video, but i see the work was straight and corners were crisp, nice job.

Basically they redid their addition. The original homeowner was either stingy with the addition or he was fudged by his contractor for sub par work.

Mike is the man no nonsense type of guy they should track down these guys that mess up people's homes and make them pay the money back to the owners.i would take Mike's class if he has a trade school.

Nice show, good construction tips, but all those mistakes are from the building inspectors, because when they build the adision, everything needs to be inspected, and now, the repairs will be more than $30,000 easy

How would it be for homes to go on the road. Like different country's looking at how they do things and there building standards. Also in vintage houses with the skills of old. Thatched roof anyone??

Some home inspectors just don't give a shit, the house we had a few years ago the inspector found some things but didn't find the HUGE gas leak in the garage that nearly blew us up and was giving us all major headaches. Luckily I found it, gas company came out pointed out why it leaked (improper water tank installation) and fixed it for no charge. I love that they offer that service, fully free of charge. If you suspect you have a gas leak, call them right away, don't worry about costs, call them immediately because hesitation with a gas leak can be disastrous.

All contractors should be like Mike Holmes. Many are close some are total turds. Bad contractors should never be allowed to build a doghouse.

if anything, holmes proves that minimums for building codes are pathetic. where some contractors or even home owners will reach code and stop. holmes sees the code mark as lap 1 and he keeps going until hes happy with the fact that what he builds will outlast the current residents grandchildren. my dad would do things the same way, when he added a deck to the house we were living in, code said how far he had to dig post holes. when the inspector came by to check if the holes were deep enough, he commented to my dad "the hell are you trying to dig to china?!". suffice it to say that deck never moved and im sure the current people living there now are enjoying that in the summer still.

I am surprised the inspector does not have a smartphone with a FLIR camera built in. If he just looked at the walls, he would have seen the incipient mold issues from the condensation working its way through from the kitchen.

There needs to be a segment where there around a table counting out the thirty grand they just burned through because she couldn't get thick socks and a space heater.
