Homeless Across from the White House

We hate homelessness, but we love homeless people., and the most shocking location that's representative of poverty in America we find homeless people in is Lafayette Square, the park directly across the street from the White House. We visit Lafayette Square every time we are in Washington, DC. It doesn't matter who the president living at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is; there are always homeless people near. Just walking to the White House, it's heartbreaking seeing the amount of street homeless people suffering just blocks away, knowing our national lawmakers can solve homelessness, but housing as a solution to solving homelessness has now become a political wedge issue., so humans are left to die outside.
The White House represents the power and wealth of this great country of ours, yet there are millions of Americans who do not have adequate housing or access to healthcare. Many suffer from food insecurity, and as Milton shared in this video, just trying to find a bathroom is a huge challenge for homeless people.
Milton is 58 years old. He's lived outside for a few years. Milton told us that his homelessness started after losing a job and challenges after a relationship. He shared he thinks shelters provide a purpose, but with all the different people, Milton is more comfortable sleeping outside. He does go into a shelter when the weather is cold, but only then.
Milton says a local church is helping him find housing. This is where you can help. We all need to advocate to fix the affordable housing crisis. For every $100 increase in medium rent, homelessness increases by 9%. If we don't prevent and solve homelessness now, homeless numbers will continue to skyrocket out of control.

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Our groundbreaking educational content reaches millions of people every month. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

This is why the US is a sad pathetic failed state. I remember my first trip to DC, Obama was recently inaugurated. Meanwhile within eyeshot of the Whitehouse we're plenty of homeless, mostly people of color, on virtually every block. I remember distinctly thinking as a black man who looked to be in his 50s ish and while clearly not in a good way, he didn't seem to have the shakes or suffering from other drug related effects or missing a bunch of teeth or seriously jacked up from years of homeless, anyways that man was washing his clothes in a public fountain, while America's first family is living in the most prestigious housing in the United States. Don't get me wrong I'm not blaming Obama for this, I'm just saying the stark contrast was surreal and disappointing to say the least. Things have only gotten much worse since then though.

@@ErikamGar No, that's not the reason that there are increasing numbers of homeless people some of whom work 2 or three jobs and still can't afford to pay rent. Rich people in America are doing better than ever. Debt only enters the conversation when it concerns ordinary working people. Meanwhile the ultra-rich are partying in San Tropez thanks to loopholes in the tax laws that enables them to avoid paying any tax. The rich outsourced labor off-shore years ago so there's no jobs, and they jacked up the rents because of course they own the buildings.

I'm afraid the system is designed this way. Chronic unemployment and homelessness is good for business, because it makes people willing to work for low wages and bad working conditions, for fear of being unemployed and homelessness themselves. It's a sad state of affairs. This country should not have this issue. With all the empty buildings and houses everyone should have a roof over their heads. I'm a homeless Veteran and before some of you start with the bullshit I'm not on drugs, I don't drink and I work full-time. But like so many Americans I was one crisis away from homelessness. I recently spent several weeks hospitalized, had an amputation and in the process of waiting to see if I could get disability I lost it all. Now here I am living in my car. And no, there is no help out here which I quickly found out but I keep pressing on.

@@AfricanTravellerChannel Working the problem as we chat. Unfortunately is a long and drawn out process. What's funny is that in order for me to get my Naval Pension and VA disability I have to send in proof and documentation regarding my medical condition. Here's a hint...... @mehameha4453
@mehameha4453 10 месяцев назад
@@joyhaave6151 but people lie, manipulate, and steal, when they are selfish and desperate enough. And homelessness will separate them into 2 groups. Those with morals and those with none. I never stay in one spot long enough to find out who is who. I get little sleep. But it isn’t just about me. It’s this way for a lot of us old people who got out priced by the market or had disabilities, and the common factor is families are usually not present anymore. I knew one guy that lost his whole family in a car wreck and he woke up from a coma after 2 years from that wreck bankrupt , homeless and his whole family dead 2 years ago. He has it worse than me. He has no one and never said goodbye. I had a stroke and lost my ability to speak, walk, and my business went bankrupt while I was recovering so could not do anything about it. I lost my trucking company but everyone got paid, so I heard. So it’s not like we were always worthless. I gave to Social Security, more than I will ever live long enough to get back. Half the employees social security too. But not having a support system is a common theme of the good homeless out here. Sometimes a brother or sister or a daughter or son that just didn’t want the burden of them in their lives. It’s like they drew a line in the sand. And said I just don’t want you. Not having that support system is the most common factor of homelessness that I have found in my 8 years. And most of the people also seem to have another common problem. That being that they are trustworthy and made the assumption that those close to them were also trustworthy. They trusted people to keep their promises, be honest and not throw them out, or screw them over, especially if they become sick or disabled. I don’t think there is a cure for bad people. Also there will always be gullible people for them to fool and use. Then they wind up old and on the street. Realizing how silly it was to trust others and think others would be like they are. I heard that so many times. I can handle my nomad life because I adjusted and realized I am not homeless, just a nomad. This is my life now. It’s fine. I’m good with it. I’m free everyday. Not in the rat race. But I have to move many times a day and never in the same spot on any night. I want to see at least those with physical disabilities like myself have a path to housing. We are getting beaten and attacked and even killed out here. And believe it or not I have never found a way off the street. Rent is too high and the programs require my disability check to have $30 less per month on it to be eligible for housing. I don’t meet the guidelines for a voucher. I worked too hard apparently when I was young. So no housing for me and others in my same situation. This is my reward. I don’t care about me. But I would be happy if eventually the physically disabled who are unemployable are off the streets. What’s odd is if I decide to become a heroine addict I could qualify for a government program to get housing, medical, dental, food, maybe even job training. But heroine? Nope. But isn’t that just crazy? I’ve been good my whole life and get homelessness, but a junkie who chooses to abuse himself to the point of addiction, gets housing a toilet shower furniture and a job. What a country, right?

Our government gives billions of taxed dollars to foriegn countries. Our cities spend millions of taxed dollars to build civil buildings, museums, libraries, parks, roads, bridges, animal adoption centers, etc. Our government and cities should built sleeping night shelters ( Chinese style pods) with showers and toilets availability. Our soldiers should oversee these drug free facilities, if they can safeguard foreigners in their countries, they can help homeless Americans. All churches in America should feed the hungry. We pay taxes, taxes, taxes, taxes! Every American deserves a safe place to sleep, showers, and toilet use daily. Our government officials should stop mismanaging our tax dollars. ❤🇺🇸❤

Its such a sad turnout of life affairs. And to end up in the dangers of homelessness and the streets. People who put their lives on the line for this country, the democracy, and for the freedom that we have which seems to be rapidly taken away by our extremesist political atmosphere and vass corruption from almost all political theater, from the top all the way down to city, local, and community politics. This disease is spreading. My friend put it well yesterday as we were talking about good and evil. And you just replace those words with empathy and narcississism, it makes it quite clear. This is a disease of the human race and is dispicable the treatment the marginalized, poor, people of color, LGBTQ, Indigenous, homeless and lets just say anyone that is not a white skinned fascist and follows their ideals. We are nothing to them. We need to more than demand change at this point. We need to make change happen. I also want to note, that you gotta notice 9 out of 10 , these humans wishes are almost always for the betterment of all others. I pray they come true. God bless this man, i pray he finds his way off the streets. Thank you, mark for another great interview.❤

We should never knock everyone who finds themselves in these situations as some of them are here because of circumstances beyond their control. Let us pray that their situations change and they can be housed. (In a moment this could be one of us)😢.

Mark you need to ask Milton things like "What did you do in the Military". "Do you have a trade?". Maybe he's a Welder & maybe my business needs a Welder. Companies out-there might be looking for just such a person. Put this in your videos Mark to help him better.

I love this site and consider it just about the only doing any real good but sometimes you have to be careful of siting the location its not like you are going to shame the government into acknowledging they created it around, I watched it about 1980 from about the same location , what no one sees to grasp is that in the free market before government came to "help", the drug additcts all but few had shelter and they paid for it
