David has lived on the streets of Denver for five years. Like many elderly homeless, he gets social security but it's not enough to pay for rent.
David says we can no longer keep our heads in the sand hoping that homelessness will go away on its own. The lack of affordable housing needs to be addressed in every city in America.
David was just released from the hospital. As taxpayers, we pay for the cost. Homelessness is expensive. Housing people saves lives and saves taxpayer money. Please watch this short video on housing first that explains the public benefits of getting homeless people into housing: invisiblepeople.tv/housingfirst
David tries to sleep during the day so he can stay awake at night. Homelessness is dangerous but at night homeless people are more vulnerable to violent attacks.
Your voice can help end homelessness. If we do not fix the affordable housing crisis, homelessness will continue to get worse. Click here invisiblepeople.tv/getinvolved to tweet, email, call, or Facebook your federal and state legislators to tell them ending homelessness and creating more affordable housing is a priority to you.
Special thanks to Mayors and CEOs for US Housing Investment housinginvestment.org

About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as RU-vid, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

I strive to have at least 3 or 4 months of my monthly expense and I am a tight budget. On the good side, I eat really good cause I don't by junk food, eat out, dair, meat, very little cheese, more plant-based fats and lost weight too. Now I find that people eat badly cause we are in a hurry. Access to Nutritious Food is a ritual and a privilege I don't take lightly, plus it is the second largest expense next to transportation. Also helped reduce anxiety and Bp from a more balance sugar intake, Switched to tea and reduced caffeine and sugar. We have to look at it as taking care of our health. Otherwise we are eating flavored particle board. Sorry for my rant and I am very grateful that I have never had something take me out .

@@briandora But in reality, only 0.17% of the US population is homeless and that's all homeless people, not just homeless people living in their cars, on a sidewalk or in a tent. As a former homeless person myself (a little over 5 years ago), I understand his experience. I was out there 9 years. There becomes a point where you have to draw yourself up, ask and keep asking the right people for housing (like a case manager), keep bugging them (in a respectful manner) until they remember you and help you. It paid off for me. A little prayer helps too.

My sympathies. But sometimes reality has to be faced head-on. Denver is an expensive place to live; very expensive. He might need to consider moving somewhere else. I understand regular housing anywhere in this godforsaken country is expensive but before I did a life switch, I simply assumed that since all I would have to live on would be my social security, would it really be so terrible to live in a state park camping ground, in a canvas wall tent? I did live in a state park for an entire year (less two weeks) and enjoyed it immensely. Just me and the dog and lots of Nature. I thought if I had to go back to that, not the worst of fates. Government and society should do more but at the same time one cannot sit around forever, waiting for someone to save you.

Deborah Goulekas I don’t care if I could only afford a one bedroom. Whether my dad had to be on a bed, a couch, or an air mattress. He’d be inside with me and a roof over his head. He’d be warm in the winter and cool in the summer. He’d have food in his belly. That’s on God. Never would I let my parent live like this. Whoever this man’s children are should be ashamed of themselves. He’s not on drugs or an alcoholic so there’s no excuse for this. Shame! I see too many of these videos of elderly people abandoned by their own children and it’s disgusting.

Why you don't see illegal immigrants on the streets is because a lot of them are ages of one learning to take care of themselves as cleaning and working because in their countries there are no work so their work were raising animals and Building Homes indicados for their families feeding cattle horses it's just like having a ranch as they grow they leave their families lot of them from Young ages 8 through 13 young coming to United States to find a better future and a lot of them start working on the streets and not even going to school many of them so they could learn to earn their money and a lot of them end up learning so much from being so young and learning to cook clean everything u can name, woman or man does not matter so they come to United States for a better life to make the money lot of them work 3 to 4 jobs a day and learned how to live caged up because of the government. So that's how a lot of them also open up their small businesses but believe me the majority of them start them from home still working an 8 to 5 job or 3 to 4 jobs a day depending send money back home to support their family that they've left behind and support themselves out here so this is a little backstory of why and maybe how come you may not see a lot of illegal immigrants out on the street because they have decided to come to United States to make a better life for themselves and for their family. They also learn to depend on themselves do not take from others or have other support them so they do not end up a lot of them in Bad Habit has nowadays Society our children have been raised differently than back in the day where everything is handed down to them so that's why they end up coming out a lot the way they do.

just campgrounds is all needed, with storage units for property.....problem is young people don't give a care, cause they expect older people to pay for them and disability don't have an extra. it's necessary to separate criminals which is the drug and sex freaks that want to have rushes and lust and prostitutes......put people in those turn trickster head games in separate camps....til they quit and don't treat other people so bad so they can rush on fixes and lies and don't care about a garden .... or a child .... the care about this idea of independant life....

It's a plan, but you also have to consider the locale, edge of the city? What about the community they would be leaving behind, not to mention to accessible amenities: walk to groceries/day program meals, doctors, community centres/senior centres/libraries. None would drive, so how would it work. No paving ? How would anyone walk in sludge and mud in the wet/winter seasons? Not to mention all the infrastructure: Hydro, water, plumbing, sewage....all that infrastructure is in cities already and just closed off at sites that are not being used for housing right now. Detroit has block after block of abandoned tennment housing apartment buildings...refurbish that infrastructure, turn on the hydro/ water again, and there you go for one city: rinse and repeat in other cities across the US. DONE !

I wonder if his granddaughters in Tennessee know that he is homeless. Maybe they would give him a room wherever they live. I used to live in Tennessee (east and middle TN) and I remember that the people there were very nice and genuine, like this man seems to be. I hope David will contact his granddaughters, or any family he has, and tell them about his current plight. It's worth a try, in my opinion, because his health may not wait around until the city decides to house him. Good health to you, David, and if I were in Denver, I would try to help him.

My spouse is an RN, he use to work in the ED. They would get a good handful of homeless folks, who they would try to help, but these guys would always end up back on the streets almost freezing to death or beaten badly or something rather (the system truly sucks). There would be some that the medical workers would try to help on their own time. but there was never a good long term solution so in the end they just get them clothing and gave money. One guy that they all knew all too well ended up in the hospital for a few weeks. One of the nurses who took care of him the most wasn’t there anymore. But my spouse had heard he was there (again) but it was more serious this time. They said he had no clothing, or shoes even. So we went and got him clothing and shoes and gave him money. But this happened so often and the guy would end up half clothed wo shoes, it wasn’t a good solution for him. But my spouse wanted to do something, since he didn’t know how else to help him. He ended up homeless because he got badly hurt on the job I think he had a head trauma and mentally he wasn’t all there. He had family but I think they tried to help him but he would always wander off back on the streets. Sadly he was an alcoholic as well and they couldn’t help him, it seemed he really didn’t want help, since he didn’t accept any. I’m pretty sure the man may be dead by now. Maybe they got him into a assistant living, since he was pretty ill. People’s situations may be more complicated if they have family. It’s true some family members may turn their back on their loved ones, but there are times when family issues are more complicated and they can’t help even if they wanted to. Best

Unfortunately a few years back it closed it's operation. It was a Godsend for me, it helped alot of people. Boulder had alot to offer but presently I don,t know what's really going on. I do see a difference in young employees that they expect promotions much faster than older generations and complain about their student loans a lot louder. Welcome to life. As someone who has suffered from depression and anxiety from a young age I know how debilitating it is. In my last job, ten years ago, I tried to push through it and my body instead was like NOPE. I started having heart arrhythmias which led to black outs and my waking up on the floor daily. Not to mention the panic attacks, the breakdowns, the burnouts, the bursts of anger due to frustration and despair of my situation and inability to manage.. Its hard living with mental health issues alone. Its a struggle against yourself daily, against a society that rejects your problems as genuine and a government that seems hell bent on killing you. Just getting through each day with committing suicide is an achievement in itself. But add homelessness into the mix as well as not financial support or insufficient support and its a recipe for disaster. This video is a year and something old. I hope this man got the help he needs. I expect I'll be where he is within the next ten years. It would be nice to know not everyone in government and society are so greedy and callous that they can't help out the most vulnerable. Sadly more people die on the streets than get help into housing.. that says a lot about our society.
