She's right. Housing resources toss you around like a rag doll calling this place and calling that place leaving messages never to really get through to anyting.

Unfortunately they don't take care of Veteran's either.... Very sad..

My heart breaks for them. These are people who really need help.

Discrimination is rampant in San Diego. I am also disabled and I have been falling through the cracks for 21 years now. I would love to help other disabled folks with all that I have learned. There are no lists of nor resources for ADA housing. There are magic words that you have to KNOW and USE in order to be able to find housing. It is definitely incompetent but unfortunately there is NO ADA enforcement in the County or the City. Please reach out to your Congress representative for advocacy because the City and the County will ignore you.

This is a disgrace and " falling through the crack" is a poor excuse and should be unacceptable. With the millions that has gone into helping how could this have happened and why is it not fixed?? #mayorgloria needs to address this and explain where the money is?? I pray that this family doesn't lose their dad and husband in some shelter or street. I for one will not be donating my money to any organization that could let this happen. Does this family have a go fund me? How do we help them directly??

Great report except you dropped the ball at the end. You said they are now back on the list, yet earlier you said that the way they do it is, if the home they find doesn't work for you, you get offered the next home up. In other words, you stay at the top of the list. If they are now back on the list, does that mean they are at the bottom or top of the list? It's a huge difference! In one case, we cheer that at least things are on their way for this family and they now have more of a chance. If they're at the bottom, it's more reason to be angry with the whole system as, once again, life is being unfair to them.

I been attacked 3 times living in East Village in the past 5 years. The last one I got hit from behind by a crazy person and was rushed to the ER in an ambulance. The cops did nothing, they issued a citation to the crazy person that attacked me from behind and the City Attorney refused to press charges. I called them for a year and they finally returned my call a day after the one year statute of limitations to file charges ended asking me how they could help me. Absolutely ridiculous! Two weeks ago I went to the post office and a crazy man comes rushing out of a camping tent chasing me with a crack pipe and a gas torch in his hand, I literally ran to the middle of the street as cops were passing by and I flagged them down, the cops waved at me, laughed, saw what was happening and kept driving. I called SDPD to report them and when they found out why I was calling they put me on hold for 2 hours on the phone and then hung up. That's SDPD for you. But you will see them taking naps while on duty around the community college and other quiet areas. Why are we paying their salaries for? BTW All three times I was attacked was in plain daylight going to the grocery store. I carry a high powered pepper spray gun concealed in a bag now every time I walk out the door, its simply not safe!

Oh I think people with disabilities need help with housing. This is so hard . There should be ADA accessible housing . It’s no one’s fault when people get sick, have cancer, loose limbs, etc.

ADA specific units are hard to come by, national wide.

San Diego Rescue Mission Downtown is the best place if your homeless and want to improve your life! I know there are housing Vouchers people can get but finding an apartment in that price range is impossible and it feels like a scam. I know it's hard to accept but if you can't afford the rent(Which is extremely expensive) I would really consider moving to an affordable area or state that offers what is needed. God bless you all!

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼Thank you for this report. There’s more than substance abuse, or mental illness that can cause homelessness. There’s Hard working taxpayers sleeping in car’s, some with children. There’s vacant housing, available but it’s all unaffordable. Not many make 3 x $2,000 a month. Lower rent and more will become homeless. Banks should work with citizens as well.

I hope this family will find housing soon. I and my family have been through that 6 years ago.

This just shows how any system can have cracks u fall into cause some how not enough staff or lack of it cause delays for anyone to get proper help anytime. this same stuff can happen to anyone, like if not u then who else who need the help only get so much who really ask but seem to get left behind cause lack of staff or records any. the state want so much but lacks help where it is needed for any reason and so some or many deal with the hassles or just leave the state and find help some place else that really do make sure all get help anytime as long as u make sure to do ur pat anytime.

Normally l have no empathy for the homeless becuse they are on drugs ,alcahol have a criminal record. And have put themselves entirely in their poor situation.But these people ABSOLUTELY 💯 deserve help. This is what taxpayers money should be fir. People who have found themselves in a tragic situation through no fault of their own!!

First, thank you CBS 8, as our last hope for sanity. I disagree about hiring an attorney to pursue a legal remedy. Attorneys are lackeys in such matters. The challenge to provide long-term solutions is greater than that. We need QUALIFIED LEADERSHIP to take charge and control by redefining, reducing, and streamlining the overlaiden bureaucratic red tape that is choking the people. Top (brave and courageous) nonpartisan lawyers could effectively serve in this capacity, not as members of another inept commission, but as a group of strong mayors serving in the cities of San Diego County. Pursue a political remedy. Unfortunately, our hapless politicians prefer to stay really busy playing "pet detective" on the chase for votes to protect their personal fiefdoms. They grovel for more government entitlement programs for their buddies, not to help the people, but to ingratiate themselves. Sadly, they are nowhere near that stature. Sigh 😕

Housing is a dead end in SD. I know elderly, disabled women in SD women shelter who've been there waiting almost a year. It's passive eugenics.

This is a tricky situation. Sad what happened to the man, I just wish our schools gave people an understanding on risk and reward as well as probability. I hope they still have money from the business they tried to make and begin saving it for any future emergencies. Hopefully she can get a good job with benefits to pay for her husbands treatments and kids schools. She can do it she just needs to focus and use whatever help she gets to get her and her family closer to a stable place. meanwhile the husband could watch the kids and the kids can take care of the husband and it will give them a sense of responsibility and of course time with their dad. Sadly any government system can not be depended on 100% because you never know how much strain is already on a system that is helping thousands of other people. Everything is finite and being self reliant is the best solution. Either way hopefully her family can continue helping them until she gets more financially stable.

Our cities and governments are dumping millions and millions of dollars on zero barrier housing. Where single junkies can get a house or am apt when we have homeless families living in cars and in shelters. Families should be FIRST!!! EVERY time.

We give homes to illegals, druggies, and people who gladly put themselves in these situations. Meanwhile people that worked hard, got life altering changes, did nothing wrong dont get immediate support. Let me run this homeless system. I guarantee you id fix it. Hardline approach.

Everyone needs help. The amount or type of help an individual needs is relevant to that individual. That's why we learn to help ourselves and our families. Everyone needs to take self-responsibility. Can't afford kids? Don't have kids. Can't afford to survive? Get a job. Have some self-discipline and self-direction! It's really that simple. Social services were intended to help people who truly and physically cannot help themselves (let's not convolute that....). The breakdown of the family unit and the ever-increasing dependency upon the state has created more idiots, lazy asses, and freeloaders than society can afford.

Let's pay for Ukraine's government though

Moveing to san diego when your on disability was the first mistake, but greed is a funny thing........ I would imagine he gets 2000 a month in disablitly....so his wife and each child gets 50%. which means... 2000 husband, 1000 for the wife....and 1000 for each kid..... So now his familly is taking 5000 a month in government support. And their homeless.....lol.

Meanwhile illegals are getting fast quick free housing vs true Americans in help need.

I knew this family were mistreated at father Joes. Her personal items were damage by staff she was having too much in her shoulders with her two kids and her husdband needing special treatment they would give her a hard time at the village Father Joes.

I do not feel sorry for these people. His short and long-term disability insurance should have provided adequately for the family in absence of his income. If you elected not to take insurance, that is his fault. Starting a business requires responsibility. They are focused on making memories. Isn't that wonderful. Those of us who fund the social safety net do not have the luxury of taking years off to make memories. This is not something that could happen to anyone. Some of us have been very responsible, saved appropriately, and prepared for the worst. I wish this story would have had a small section about how they helped the family gain employment that resulted in self-reliance.
