Behind every homeless person is a story. How did they end up living on the streets? How do they survive and what are their expectations for the future?
Mark Horvath has experienced the highs and lows of the American dream - from a successful career in TV to barely surviving, homeless and addicted, on Hollywood Boulevard. When he made it off the streets, he set out to film the stories of America’s homeless and draw attention to their lives.

When I was homeless it was more than not having a roof over my head. My dignity, pride, and sense of self worth became in question. By the grace of God and and my own determination, I was able to extricate myself from that situation. I hope other homeless individuals can find the strength and determination to find a way out.

In other states you cannot sleep on the streets. You can have to stay hidden away In a tent in the woods. CA rents are way high and you have to be able to get and keep not just a job, but a great job. First thing to do is get out of CA.

i was homeless for two weeks in the 1970s due to my husband being sick and his parents refusing to help. They threw us out of their home with our baby girl,and kitty. i never recovered. i am still afraid of life and never could settle well. the ordeal was too horrible, leaving its mark right up to my elderly years. people should never be homeless.

I think that if u have not recovered from something that happened 50 years ago u have to look deeper as to why u have not been able to recover I have been homeless, raped,stabbed, stolen from, beat up,mentally and physically abused as a child ,plus MORE so i get what u mean to a point all those feelings and fears from what has happened to me ate STILL IN ME ,but i have recovered,that said i am still very cautious and dont trust people fully actually EVER .so if thats what u mean by u have not recovered then i understand. I have gone on with life went to university, owned businesses houses investments etc,but i have never 100percent felt worthy or deserving even though i am a nice person and do many nice and charitable things for many people,being abused DOES LEAVE U FEELING BROKEN.

I'm a veteran and at one point in my life I was homeless I can somewhat understand the struggles that some of these people go through. After I got out of the USAF I got a job and worked from 2005 until 2009 I had gotten laid off because the company was outsourcing to India. I tried to find a job but couldn't and fell into a deep depression as well as drug addiction which led to me being homeless during that time. It's not easy even if you have a degree or experience most people live paycheck to paycheck and if you lose your job you can't afford to keep up with the bills and unfortunately bills don't wait and you'll end up being evicted and have nowhere to go. How I got back on my feet was going to rehab and sobering up and taking medication for my depression I finally found a good paying job and that's where I am today. Just thought I'd share my experience. God Bless.

Good for you to have medical insurance. I just graduated from school, and don't have the money to pay for medical insurance. It's hard for me to find a good job because I don't have much experience. But compared to the people in the video, I have to say I'm lucky that I'm just able to make ends meet. I know things will be better for me, but it takes time, at least another year before I can have a decent life. Good luck to everybody.

I have always thought about it since I was a very young woman . I'm 61 years old now, a Widow and I have been homeless. When my beloved husband Paul transitioned into the next world , I became homeless both spiritually and literally . I always said that where my Paul was , was where " home " was . I've a small room in a house. I live with my beloved Border Collie and I'm struggling with Degenerative Disc Disease . Homeless shelters = being robbed & mugged by the rest of the inmates . Best to stay away . I speak from real experience .

You recognize that is a serious danger so I ask the question: Are you currently living on mac/cheese, spaghetti, zero alcohol or any type of entertainment expenses? If you haven't saved for that rainy day or loss of work then it's your own fault for not having saved for a short term financial disaster! So many of my tenants purport they can't save a penny and I point to the starbucks coffee cup, cable tv, internet, cell phone, take home food bags, beer bottle, etc. Saving money is done by NOT spending on every little thing and making it a way of life until it adds up to a substantial amount.

@@brooksequine7621 --- I left home at 16 and sofa surfed a few months until I could become emancipated. I worked everyday after school and lived in a dingy apartment. I had nobody but myself and I lived on ramen noodles, box mac/cheese and only drank water for over a year. I bought a crappy truck for $300 although I often walked to work and school. I saved every penny with zero thought to buy soda, alcohol, any type of luxury, etc. I bought my first crappy house for $12,000 and fixed it up at age 17 and within a year I did the same with the hose next door. That was my beginning of being a landlord. I lived in the crappy little thing for several years and kept buying more depressed properties in the same neighborhood and fix them up. I finally felt financially safe at 21 when I bought a new home and went from the lowest of rent to a $200,000 home. I've always lived on far less than what I earn because it's RESPONSIBLE! I retired at age 40 living on my rental income and even now I live on less than half of what I earn. My kids enjoy knowing that I'm not spending their inheritance but in fact it gets larger every year because I am such a penny pincer! I try to educate many of my tenants when they ask financial advice and none of them listen because they want their luxury or feel good items.

I think that sometimes when someone is homeless for a long period of time, perhaps they miss being validated as a human being. I had a personal experience once where sitting next to a man on a bench, he told me that he didn't want money. He said he'd not felt the touch of another human being in years. All this man wanted was a hug. A basic human need for physical contact which had been denied him because he lived on the street.

Thanx, Edith. But to me its not all that bad. I'm employed and have a car. This is pretty much how I choose. Its this or give up 1/2 my paycheck just to have a place to put my stuff so I can go earn the landlord 1/2 my earnings and repeat it over and over again. I rented a room for 3 1/2 years @ $415/mo. That litterally paid his down payment. When I was late one month, I got booted out in a week. I paid their down payment and had nothing to show for it. So living in my car is my choice. It sucks, but atleast I can eat and maybe have some change left over now. When I was paying rent, there were times i had nothing to eat.

@@AngryHybridApe Yep, if you have a car and a job, you're fortunate because you have options. There's a world of freedom when you have options. Your car can be home while you're saving, spending only for food and necessities. I'm retired on disability, have a part-time job, nice car, and it was my own decision to rent a cheap, clean, warm room--so I can save my money. I've learned one IMPORTANT thing in life: Money = Options! I feel blessed and hope others can find blessings in their own situations.

I often wonder why they can't turn schools that are closed into shelters and let the homeless participate on the up keep and cooking of meals as their way of earning their way. This could be a stepping stone for people to have a temporary place to live in order to actually have an address and be able to find a job to save enough money to find a place of their own. When I was a child, I had a home ( gifted from my grandfather) but I and my siblings were safer in the streets. Both our parents were mentally ill. I and my siblings worked at a young age (around 9 years old) the boys eventually all went into military service but the girls had to fend for themselves. We all married; none of us married well. With one exception, we all were married to alcoholics. We hid our problems as a means to having normal social contacts. People do avoid needy people no matter what the need may be: financial, domestic violence, or mental problems. Most of society is indifferent to human suffering.

@@lazyday4298 I must be an alien, because when I see someone crying or head down or upset I just automatically go "What's wrong?" especially in the streets. O_O People have this miss conception about Individuals with Autism. They think we don't have empathy, but if fact recent studies show we are overtly empathic, we have too much sympathy towards others and are very in-tuned to emotions, like nonhuman animals are, which is why Individuals with Autism tend to gravitate towards other species of animals more so than with other humans. Most humans lost their intuitions about what it is to be a living being. I don't ask myself "What Would Jesus Do?" I would ask myself "What Would a Dog Do?" Dogs tend to understand us humans better than most humans do. So I approach people who are crying, depressed, sad, or angry. I have nothing to offer but my ears to listen and an arm to reach out and pat a back/hug. For some humans that means the world to them and it is enough. No one wants to be forgotten, NO ONE!

I've just come across this video and I couldn't agree with you more.Mark deserves a medal because he has helped so many homeless people,if it weren't for him most,if not all the people featured in this documentary would undoubtedly still be homeless or worse,probably dead.I have watched a lot of RU-vid videos on homelessness recently and they've honestly really made me realise just how lucky I am to have a roof over my head in one of the nicest areas in my city, which is in Edinburgh, Scotland in the UK. I myself, have had addiction issues all of my adult life,I'm turning 38 tomorrow, and I'm now tapering my medication to get off it once and for all, I'm just over half the way there.Fortunately the UK isnt as bad as the US with homelessness but it's still an awful epidemic, most people ending up homeless for such unavoidable reasons such as losing their job, yet the government still doesn't help them, regardless of their status before becoming homeless which enrages me.They could have worked all their lives and paid their taxes but that doesn't matter to the government. This is a national crisis and it blows my mind that people who live in western countries and the governments would rather, for example, spend billions upon billions, even trillions, on weapons of war and they choose to ignore the their own peoples suffering as long as they're loaded with tons of cash, nothing else seems to matter. I have only been classed as 'homeless' twice in my life and even then, I wasnt actually homeless because myself, my partner and children were put in a proper house until we got lucky and got a permanent home. I definitely see the HUGE difference in homelessness in the US and here in the UK, my heart breaks when I see homeless people out begging in the streets and it wholeheartedly makes me feel incredibly grateful and I appreciate everything I have. When I've overcome my addiction to very strong prescription drugs I plan to become a drugs support worker, especially after finding my older brother dead on my setee on Valentines morning which was the result of a seizure he took in his sleep caused by an addiction to street/fake xanax, he stopped taking them because he'd been using steroids for the 1st time in his life, aged 41 and as the steroids "masked" any withdrawals he would have had, unfortunately, he thought he was okay😥😔 I cant bare to think of another family going through what myself, my mum, my 3 kids and my neice, (my brothers daughter who he had full custody of) so I'm determined to be just like you Mark and that's helping people who are in the same position as I'm in at the moment, which will take me a year or 2 but I WILL succeed in this. Well now I've told my life story😄, I look forward to watching more of your videos, what an amazing man you truly are🙂

USA could be a better place if the rich 1% would pay taxes and that tax revenue would be used to alleviate the effects of homelessness. There are surprising problems. Rich San Francisco with democratic party in power cant provide emergency housing even if a lot of money has been allocated for this. Somehow corruption has been able to get the money and produced apartments are very few.

Then, where do I go after being so tired from waiting all day and evening? I ended up homeless bc of my lease not being renewed. it was the 3 of us, me my mom and my husband.my husband up and split so now it's just me and my mom now trying to get back on our feet it's very difficult bc of this being a college town and the rent is just too much for low income people to afford.if I had 3 wishes my first wish is a home for my mom.thats all, my mom has been a major support for me through this time.thank you for bringing this issue out into the open and giving us a voice.

All of these beautiful people touched me, but I had to comment about the young man in Chicago, Jamir (sorry if I misspelled). He has been homeless since the age of 13 but stayed in school and was getting ready to graduate! If he ever does anything else in his life, I think he should be the most proud of that feat. What a great example of motivation and perseverance! So many of the people in this video made me smile, and if any of you are reading this, THANK YOU!!! It takes a strong person to be so candid, and it's refreshing amidst all the fake and materialistic individuals that populate this earth. I've learned more watching this documentary (and others like it) than I ever did in college. I'm a Disabled Veteran and I know I'm one step away from being homeless myself. It's a scary but realistic scenario in today's economy... So I'm going to do what I can to help in my city!

Most did not choose to be homeless and if you think otherwise your very much in denial. If you don’t feel comfortable giving money give then food gift cards and these will not allow the purchase of alcohol or drugs. Buy them a cart or a blanket and pillow . Buy them a warm coat or donate one you’re not using. Buy them a battery operated radio with additional batteries or flash lights . They can also be shown where the nearest food bank is and I don’t mean a shelter. Donate Aspirin or Tylenol and shoes and socks . Things these ppl truly need . Don’t just judge. Help them . Buy underwear and panties and feminine products for the ladies . Donate travel size deodorants and toothpaste and brushes. Combs and hair brushes etc .

I'm homless, and its not as bad as people think, for a single guy anyways. Families and women got it rough. But they usually get back on track soon enough. I have a job, car. Money is no longer the problem. When I was paying rent I was always broke. My issues now are trying to find what I just set down. Living in a car means organising and unorganising perpetually. I'm constantly turning my car upside down looking for something. Bathroom areas are a big problem too. Showers not so much. There's campgrounds and for $2 get cleaned up. Technology has gifted us all with phones. So communication is there. Entertainment? You're looking at it. Its a lifestyle I dont recommend to anyone. The only reason I do it is because I'm somewhat a loner. I cherish my independence, so I dont fit well with roomates. But I refuse to pay for a room for years then never own it. But not all homeless deserve sympathy. Trust me on that. There are some that belong right where they are. And most have either alcohol or chemical dependancy issues. Its not like they're not capable of work. They just choose not to. And why not? They find something to eat eventually, and thats all that matters to them.

Living in salt lake as a child, my mother used to take in homeless people from time to time to try and get them back on their feet. Some took advantage and sniffed gas in our home or did drugs but not all did, some don't want to be helped, that is for certain but the main misconception is they did it to themselves but many are mentally ill and have no where to go, others as pointed out on here fell victim to circumstances beyond their control. Not all of them are druggies and we have to remember that. Many are the very people who fought for our country and we neglected them. We need to help our homeless first and foremost before we help anyone else.
@fireflights1977
@fireflights1977 6 лет назад
Ann Merrick the ones who aren't mentally I'll yes, but teaching a mentally ill person to be "responsible" is going to do nothing. I am sorry to say but we need to reopen the mental hospitals but remove all the horrible things that used to happen there. Just take care of them so they aren't just roaming the street waiting to die. Those who fell in bad circumstances it is up to them to work out their issues to regain their lives.my sister could so anyone can. But we do need to help them, it's not about responsibility for the majority of them.
@fireflights1977
@fireflights1977 6 лет назад
Ann Merrick no you are the one who is clueless, have you even taken the time to spend time with a homeless person? My sister became homeless with her two young children for three years because she had been ran over by a car. The justice system protected him more than it did her. Many people fall homeless for many reasons and with the rising in cost of living, it could continue to rise. Look at what is happening to San Francisco for goodness sake. I know some have put themselves in that situation by falling prey to drugs and alcohol but not all have had that problem to put themselves into this situation and assuming that responsibility is going to fix the problem is dillusional and very misguided. You have to learn why they are there in the first place before you can claim they need to be taught some responsibility. Because I have seen even working people being homeless because they can't afford the cost of living even on their jobs earnings.
@fireflights1977
@fireflights1977 6 лет назад
Ann Merrick stoop to being homeless? Wow...just wow. No one likes being homeless lady and what if they have no family near them to take them in and can't get a bus or plane ticket to get to them are they still choosing as you imply, to being homeless? My sister I assure you did not choose to be homeless. None of her children's father's side would take them in, the father being dead since the youngest was 7months old, they believed my sister was the reason he took his own life so refused to help her, she has had a falling out with most of my family but me and at the time I was living with friends so I could not help her plus she is in Utah and at the time I was in PA. You seem to me as a person who looks down on the homeless but remember you can't get disability without having an address not can you get medical. So most of these people are without medical or any money to help them out. Those that do, are usually living in the shittiest hotels you can think of. Perhaps you should take the time to help at a shelter and see exactly how bad they are. I grew up poor, not homeless but poor and I have gotten to learn just how fine that line is between the poor and the homeless. If not for a kind landlord, we too would have been homeless as children. I am willing to bet you the way you talk have never had it rough in your life so it is easy for you to lable people.
@fireflights1977
@fireflights1977 6 лет назад
Ann Merrick wow, did you not even pay attention to my explanation of my sister's plight? She was RAN over her body by a car, if you think she recovered enough to work then you are completely stupid. My sister got only a certain amount from the car insurance and this man purposely ran her over. Because the courts protected him, she can't sue him even after he served his time in jail. She had to spend three years on the street while fighting for disability and only getting 700 a month for the children's survivor benefits which no one can live on that much with two kids alone. You have no idea and you are the clueless one if you believe everyone on the streets wants to be there.
@fireflights1977
@fireflights1977 6 лет назад
Ann Merrick done talking to you because you have absolutely no idea what it is like to be poor in America. I thought we were talking about the homeless in America and you were talking about your country while i was discussing American homelessness not britians. And no, we didn't have it better than you in my family. We lived off Ramen, rice, Mac and cheese which was the cheapest things my mother could buy. Fruit was a Christmas item only in our family and it was only apples and oranges, I was abused for most of my childhood, mentally and physically, I endured sexual molestation at eight, I was kidnapped by a sexual preditor at 12. So don't tell me I had it better than you because I have seen a documentary of what you guys get the you are poor off the government and it's enough to live off of. This will be my final message to you because I am done listening to you call me names and thinking you know more about my country than you really do.

They didn't have money saved to rent a home. They bounced around and he was so nice yet so bitter, angry and hurt. He told me he wanted to go home, to have his own room again, to have privacy. He went from being a straight A student to being expelled and getting sent to the local school for the " bad kids" . I haven't seen him but I heard he's now in a juvenile detention center. I volunteer at a homeless center. It's called ANSIL ( A New Start in Life ) . It's located in Kennewick Washington which is one of the 3 cities of this area calked Tri-Cities Washington. It's sad that America has so much homelessness. Homelessness is just sad period. A lot of people assume that all homelessness is because of drugs and alcohol not so. I think it's great you're documenting and filming this problem people need to be educated about this ! Thank you for caring and doing something about this.

One thing for sure....Homelessness cannot be solved. He mentions “solving” it, but there are an endless number of variables and reasons for homelessness. While some aspects of homelessness may be minimized, or possibly solved; that isnt the case for all incidents. Where there are people, there will always be those that live on the fringes of society.
@phoenixXchannel
@phoenixXchannel 5 лет назад
Sorry Justin, but I have to disagree with you. There is only one thing for sure - homelessness exists due to the lack of caring people. Even back in the day, if you did not have a home for some reason - you can always count on the kindness of strangers. These days - you must be wary of strangers to survive. Sometimes, even caring people will hurt you - enabling you to hurt yourself and others. Yes - it can be solved. Some people turn their backs to a problem - and there are others who Care and wish to help. Which are you, my friend? Peace.

I Want to tell you all a little bit of a side of GREED I saw, A couple years ago I worked for a Multi-housing company, (worked there 5 years). The 3 business partners who owned this big company own apartment complexes in Washington, Oregon, Nevada, California, Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico. The instructions to us Managers was, if you are 90% full raise rents for new tenants and for current tenants the rule was to raise it every time a lease expired. It took me 2 years for them to give me a raise but the rents were constantly going up. They didn't even considered the local cost of living, they just wanted more and more money for no reason really. Well, other than greed of course. It made my heart shrink to know that's how those people operate because I am a person who barely makes it too. its sad to see 1/2 or 2/3 of your money go towards housing leaving you very little for the other endless expenses....Yes, homelessness can happen to anyone.

Hi Lynda, I'm sorry to hear your story, and my prayers are with you. I too have lost much in my life, house, job, security. That was 25 yrs ago and I've never recovered from those loses. Add to that serious injuries, associated mental health issues, lack of family love and support, I'm on the verge of homelessness again. I live in Australia, and every year houses increase, rentals increase, so the gap just gets wider and wider. Capitalism has turned into an evil monster.... an enlightened society is one which looks after its most vulnerable, No man is an island. We ALL need each other! If I was wealthy I would build tiny houses on land and give homes to the old, sick, alone, young. Its easier to be kind! 💜☀️

Everybody struggles at some point. I understand homelessness--everything could be taken from you in an instant. And the trauma of something like that is enough to render some people almost catatonic that they can't figure out what to do next. Instead of walking around the homeless, show compassion and mercy and maybe do something to help. Homeless people are people, too. Having no home does not take away from their humanity. Instead of criticizing the system, beat the system and do something on your own, by yourself. We all got a roof over our heads, a bed waiting for us at night. They don't. They don't have family. It's about time we be family for one another.

I've lived most of my life in L.A., I'm 60+. As a teen I remember the homeless being only in the downtown skid row area. Now it's spread throughout L.A. county and beyond. But at this time, in 2021 I've noticed for the first time this transitional homeless shelters are popping up all over the place. Two of them are the shipping containers divided into two dwellings with a full bathroom in each. The other are the new 8'x8' "pallet shelters". Which in my opinion are the best and most affordable. I've known & talked to couple of homeless people that live there. At first they didn't like it cuz it felt like a prison, too many rules. No visitors, No drugs, No signs of intoxication, No hoarding, they could come and go as they pleased except, No one allowed after 10 pm, No loud music, I hear they even provide all types of counselors... but, there is every commodity as a hotel. It's a gated community, 24/7 security, a laundry room, free meals, you can't ask for more you have your own private dwelling with a door & your own key, janitorial services, many have their own toilets and showers inside their own dwellings others have & share them outside in trailers. Yes, the taxpayer is putting up the bill but, better than stepping over them while they're sleeping on the sidewalks. One of the homeless I know has cleaned up his act & thinks it's due to the stricted rules they have.

Amen, Kelinia! They have no idea how they grew up and the struggles they dealt with. The lack of others letting them down to the point of self hatred and feeling like the world is the enemy after all the bad things that happened to them with no remorse. That stuff messes with you especially as a kid. You don't grow up and have the same mentality. Cognitive Neuroscience has shown that people who have been through traumatic situations have different brain responses than those who grew up normally. Their thought process is damaged and they develop inabilities to function the way a human is supposed to function. So no, the drugs and alcohol are used to escape the REAL issues as to why they are on the streets. Don't add on to their traumas by being ignorant about something you could never wrap your head around.
