My little boy has offered in the past and would do the same for me as well. Of course we'd never expect it of our kids, but it's such a lovely thing for them to think of it off their own back and be so thoughtful about other people.

It can sometimes be hard to empathize with someone who is actually going through a stressful circumstance or experience till they themselves experience it.

I was recently laid off from a company I have been at for 30+ years in many different job titles. Suddenly, I am in solidarity with people down on their luck. My fear is that I will end up not finding a job in my field and having to take anything available. Or even worse finding not job at all and ending up homeless. I hear there are all these opportunities for work online, but I have no experience thereof.

You realise how lonely you are when unemployed. Sure, my family have supported me, but it seems like no-one else cares, not employers, nor the job centre, nor the government or society. There is a stigma and you feel like a loser, you are labelled a "dole bludger", and looked at differently.

Interview quotas. Plain and simple. We had a target we had to hit before we could hire someone - for every position available, I had to interview 25 people at that one major online auction site. Not doing so gets you written up.

So true, Theresa. I've literally heard young hiring managers (colleagues at my old firm) make comments as they viewed applications about how this or that person is probably old. Now I do have to say that I've noticed the older employees at my firm (who are not in senior executive positions) are quite a bit slower and have a much more negative attitude than the rest. Out of about 25 colleagues, we have 6 who are over age 50, and all 6 are the weakest of the group. So there may be some rhyme to the reason. At what point do you say the firm and its shareholders must come before keeping people on just to ensure they get a paycheck each week?

We often confuse youth with competency - a grave mistake. The idea that this subset of workers are the "weakest" is someone's perception, likely a biased one. So your suggestion is that for the good of corporations' bottom lines people over 50 ought to be let go and certainly never hired? How are more unemployed older people - who are too young by at least a decade to retire in most circumstances - better for the larger society? Really, I hope you've reconsidered this careless remark since you made it. And, I also hope you are never on the far side of 50 with a lot more to offer, but discounted as weak and a drain on your company's profit margin. Nothing like walking in the shoes of your own biases to see their foolishness.

E E My stroke left me disabled I have to use a walking stick from weakness and numbness down my left side, I also suffer from long and short term memory loss, I have difficulty using my left hand as I have fine motor skill issues, recently I've been having seizures so I didn't lose my job as such I resigned.

Children need to be taught about finances and how to handle money. I don't necessarily believe that dragging the children through the entire emotional roller coaster of what job loss means, is healthy for them. Those little girls were terrified at times - first, that their father would go to jail for taking part in the sit-in at the bankrupt work place; and again when they saw their father falling apart as time went on - he turned from a loving, hugging Dad to a screaming shrew with them; and the one girl at the end sitting on her bed talking about how good it was he had a job now because a job is good for more than money, it's good for self-esteem too. As if she has the slightest clue what self-esteem is. Kids don't need to get down and scrape rock bottom; they should know what is happening because Dad is suddenly at home all the time, and they need to know that finances have changed so they won't necessarily be able to do all the things they used to do - but they don't need to see Dad cry, or overhear conversations between Mom and Dad at a time when they're both losing their optimism and starting to talk about "what if.......". Don't shut the kids into a closet and never tell them what's happening, but DO know how much is enough for a child.

@@burly636 , I agree with you! Though I think parents should be transparent about their struggles with their children but not to that extent. Children should be allowed to be children and know /understand the minimum as possible. No child should hear their parent on the phone with a bill collector or talking about certain things. Let them play and when they lay their head down at night they sleep instead of worrying. When I was a child money was never spoken about in front of my brother or I. My parent's wanted us to sleep, focus on school, sport's and to never bring up their finances. We worked at an early age and contributed to buying our school supplies, clothing and so forth. To this day my parent's would still never discuss their financial situation with us. Some children know more than they should as seen here.

Exactly. The problem is that when your company goes under and you are in your 50s, you need to financially consider retirement because that's pretty much your only option. I'm from the US and my father in law was faced with that choice. No one wanted to hire him because he came from a time where an associates degree was worth something and when you're in your 50s, people think you aren't going to stick around. So, they don't hire you. A lot of young people around my age think that people can actually just get another job at the drop of a hat.

Thank you. I was doing exactly that in my head and it is so ridiculous to put our situations against others, our stuggles against others because they are still really hard to go thru no matter what end you may be at so thank you for writing this comment.

I’m sorry but these people are just moaning so much and seem entitled. These are the same people who will laugh at families from third world countries but if they were put in those situations for a day they would probably do what they’re good at, slitting their wrists or drugs. Smh.

I see people from "3rd world countries" living in the U.S., complaining despite having assistance and more "stuff" than many Americans grew up with, believe it or not.. They developed expectations. I find that it helps to develope a child as he/she are growing up to go through ALL sorts of emotions.It will make them a lot stronger, as adults, than others that are wrapped in cotton wool all their lives.

It means your job is not needed anymore. I looked up his former company and it was bought by another in 2009 when the video was filmed. That explains why he was made redundant.

Just came by this Video. One; Ageism is very Real. I have a Master's degree in HR. Am 48 years old; Survived the Recession, then Covid hit last 2years. To Survive; I became a grocery Delivery driver. Went from making $240K to $24K per year to $1500 per week delivering groceries to $50p-700 per week working 7-days a Week. Point? Hang in there and Take Any jobs to survive! In America; 332 million people; 2Million are Homeless and another 2-million working and sleeping out of their Cars! Stay strong; don't give Up!

i made a job for myself in ecommerce, have you thought about ecommerce or affiliate marketing, or looked into passive income? The local economy doesn't affect my income. its not for everyone but i love being my own boss. Good luck

Exactly. I was made redundant about 5 years ago, and it was almost 6 months before my girls heard 2 words about how we couldn't afford stuff. Even then it was a case of them just having to make do a few weeks longer with clothes or shoes than might otherwise have been the case, tho holidays and frivolous stuff just quietly went away with no discussion to mark their disappearance... they rarely even noticed.

I think it depends on how it's handled. My mam did work, for a while it was zero hours contract but thankfully was able to pick up some work even if it was part time, my father went to extreme lengths to avoid paying the child allowance he owed so often nothing from him. Finances were tight at times and my mam was open about it but also open about ways in which she saved money, areas she made cuts so we had money for other things, etc. It taught me a lot and made me a lot more aware of money and at a point when I was struggling to get by as an adult I knew how to handle it.

Um 😐 not exactly sometimes it will be good for children to learn about expenses and how much parents earn At least they will know money don’t come easy and learn how to manage finances

@@MKiurinuRigold One thing is to learn about expenses and another is hearing your parents constantly talking about not having a job a no money, is to much for a kid, because kids worry every time they hear the parents stressed about not having a job.

Most kids are like this....people are so weird about kids in these documentaries and think they are extraordinary angels. This is just how kids are. They are good-natured and generous.

I can’t stop judging people who sit at home and do nothing but cry to the cameras when my mom clawed her way out of the same situation by cleaning houses when she was told there was no work.

Some people (not you) have bagged her on here, and said that she is silly, should give up her "dream" and "get a real job".. Well, she is starting her own business. It is a business where there isn't a lot of people are doing, meaning that she is cornering the market, and might get a lot of gigs, and thus, a lot of money. Also, she is helping other people who are unemployed, by giving them jobs (like the people who formed her choir).

In frustration my mother dumped the family bills on me I was 10 or 12, I woke to screaming.

I think its because Andy and Jackie first got into the workforce in a time when companies didn't really worry about taking CV's. So they're aren't familiar with doing them because they're from a time when cv's werent common. These days everytime you ask about work people look at you and say (sometimes coldly) 'Just drop your resume and we'll see what happens'.

I did think this odd? Cvs have been around for years and years you wouldnt need to spend £500 for someone with his intellect it frustrated me watching that as i felt he was being ripped off

Its probably his confidence in writing one when he hasn't written one ever/in a long time. Also don't forget the resources available wouldn't be as abundant when this was filmed. And CV templates for executive roles can be hard to write

I was made redundant and couldn't find work in the UK I ended up looking for work abroad and after a year of unemployment I got a 1 year contract in the states. That was 18 years ago and I am still on a 1 year contract. I have saved enough to buy a business in the UK and I am thinking of returning home to employ myself.

I agree. I left a job in a redundancy scheme which I regretted quickly afterwards thinking of relocating for family reasons. However I was lucky to get a temp job two weeks later which I’m making the most of. I agree that attitude is everything in these situations you can’t afford to be too idealistic if you want to move forwards.

And it's getting closer and closer now with all the price and interest spikes, sadly

I barely have hours at work so I considered myself unemployed as well. During those days that I’m not scheduled for work, it’s difficult for me to come outside my house so I know what you mean. Do you have a yard in your house? Maybe you can go to your yard in the morning and do some exercises. I’ve been doing that which helps relieve my anxiety a bit. It would be more helpful if I can walk my neighborhood but I really can’t.

I am 52 , never had job security, worked all my life , still am , I own no house no pension total squat, i patiently wait end of days now. Its not like I sat down on it, i tried but dependents and care cost so much i have to live month to month.

Yes, the first couple have no idea what real poverty is. And they seemed to want to bend the rules to make two separate claims instead of a joint claim. If a couple in my area did that they would be called benefit cheats. It's strange how one's socio-economic status affects the way actions are viewed. Look through the fog everyone. Crying like he has lost a family member. I think maybe he needs to get a grasp on who he is rather than what he is.

Came to the UK with 400 euros in my pocket. I had to move around were jobs were... common sense right? I worked, studied...did the best I could to be a good citizen and have a reasonable life. Always "ran" away from "bad crews". Today I have a lovely family and I have my own place. A lucky person.

how much could he put on a cv if he worked the same job for 20 years. he could google how to write up a cv, or the job center should show people how to. if he pays the person 500 to do his cv, he still has to provide all the information to them, so in a way all they would be doing is typing it up for him and padding his info a little.

So very true. My parents shielded me from this..but as a child of the 80s I saw friends houses being repossessed. As a child it seemed like they had done something very wrong and the parents were bad people. It scarred me a lot and I've become a workaholic. Never travelled and was far too scared to ever have kids. You are right... It really does effect the kids

laughingallthetime50 Like I've told my sister, don't talk finances around your children. They are more aware of noticing these problems with money going on than you might think. They have enough to worry about. Hopefully your financial difficulties will pass, but the kids will be nervous about it happening in the future .

When I am around my parents, my dad tells all their business, reads their bills aloud as he opens the mail, etc. I have stayed with them as an adult jobless a few times, and it's hard looking for a job, and hearing all that stuff with your parents.

@Spooky Moo I was in a conversation about this with my sister only a week ago. I believe all children should be taught by their parents or as a school subject in secondary school like how to get a mortgage and finance and basic life lessons. We have none of that. I basically had to learn as I went along like everyone one else but found it hard even with a steady job, sorting out bills etc.

right? It's definitely and unemployment documentary, but poverty is a far stretch...especially when you have a savings that you're living on. they might be headed to poverty, but they aren't in poverty just yet.

Maybe you have a point of comparison....maybe this country?........if that is correct ....then I suggest you hop over to an underdeveloped country and live there .......in exactly the same way as the indigenous people........then you would know what poverty is. Somehow I do not think you have done that.......you are therefore welcome to correct me if I am wrong. The point here is these good families are perceiving loss.....going without ......high stress levels .......and yes suffering .......and if they consider themselves "poor ".......then they should at least allowed that feeling ......even though their poverty is "western". Make allowances for a persons psychological perception of a situation.......and it would allow you to be more kind.....and less judgmental.

If he had been dealing with those people for some years then he would have built up a good rapport with them and I think it was a good gesture to let them know he wouldn't see them again, and thanking them for all they had done. It's simply good manners after all. I hope he did find a good job eventually, he was a good man, with a lovely family.

After all the payments, there's hardly money left for food, clothes, animals etc. Inside the beautifull homes with animals is poverty, even it looks from the outside otherwise... don't judge so quickly.

It’s easier to go from nothing to nothing than something to nothing. Without people in that income class whose going to buy the stuff that employs service workers? If you on benefits long term those service jobs about all that’s out there to move you up. It’s not right or fair but it is reality.

Rachel D it's still a documentary about unemployment. I was simply commenting on the mothers complaints. A lot of people struggle with unemployment and most wouldn't have the privilege of owning a nice home or a pc for that matter.

Kayleigh Parker so that automatically allows them to moan and complain about applying for jobs? People go through a lot worse to earn and provide for themselves and their family, and they don't make some of the assumptions or complaints that women from the first family did. Everyone has to work / find work and it's not easy. It's not being judgemental at all it's called living in the real world, were privileges don't exist for everyone.

I am reading some of the comments- the people who had good jobs, and lost them, and now are feeling pinched- that is poverty to them- not to you, but to them- if you were them, you would call it poverty too- don't hate on these people, because they had a comfortable life- is it their fault that they had it like that, and now they don't?- yes, people have to consider taking a lesser job, or 2 jobs, but it is hard- to go to college work hard all those years, build a good life, and then be told you have to take less pay, or a lower position in order to work- do you understand it is about people's self worth and dignity?- I get it, do what you have to do(legally) in order to put food on the table, but why are people bitter at other people's success?- you are not going to ever go farther than you are with that attitude- don't call yourself a caring person, and then don't have any compassion on people, when they fall on hard times, whoever they are- we want people to have compassion on us- let's do the same- ok?

Couldn't agree more with you. The company I work for just put off a group of people some of them had been with us for 30 odd years.
