I first met Arien two years ago while walking around Hollywood giving out socks to homeless people. She shared candidly about the abuse homeless women experience living out on the streets. You can watch that first video here: • Arien is a homeless wo...
The first two times I connected with Arien happened organically. You can watch her second Invisible People here: • UPDATE on Arien: She i... Arien mentioned attempts to kill herself that prompted the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) outreach team to go visit her. They helped her with clothes and hygiene products and placed Arien on a housing list, but there are tens of thousands of homeless people in Los Angeles and not nearly enough housing to get people off the streets.
Invisible People facilitates an online support group for homeless people. Arien and I became friends on Facebook. My last visit in February was rearranged. Arien wanted to update her story. In this video, she talks about being raped on her 3rd day of homelessness:
• Homeless Woman's 3rd I...
I never wanted to hit the milestone of a 3rd video with the same homeless person so a 4th interview with a young homeless woman is not something to celebrate. It's disturbing that in a few years time Los Angeles could not get Arien out of homelessness.
This time of year communities is release their PIT (point in time) homeless count numbers. Many cities like Los Angeles will add some spin to the information to hopefully give an impression to the general public that some success in fighting homelessness is happening. Truth is, no matter what the PIT number is it's just a number. Only one homeless person sleeping outside is a tragedy.
Here is Arien's GoFundMe if you'd like to help support her: www.gofundme.c...

About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as RU-vid, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

@MICKEYISLOWD
@MICKEYISLOWD 4 года назад
I have tried to get help for depression many times from my doctor but he doesn't care in the slightest. I have tried many antidepressants and they don't work for me. Either I get worse side effects like 'brain zaps' and headaches or no effect whatsoever. When I complained they made me feel worse he tried to lie to me that I must continue even though I had tried them for nearly 6 months. I think he wanted me to continue so he gets more money for the script rather than me getting better then he lied and said I should try MIND which is basically talking with poorly trained health professionals who do not have any real training for mental health so they understand what they are doing. I later found out on my own that there is ketamine I could of tried at a clinic in London which costs money but I would of tried this even though it would be too expensive for me. It would be actually worth going into debt for because the treatment can actually help rewire the damaged part of my brain and then lighter doses continued there afterwards. I am so angry this was kept from me for so long when I have been feeling suicidal for so many yrs and also I have felt hopeless for very long periods also.

@millions2nette
@millions2nette 3 года назад
I think her ability to look nice, clean and apply make-up, while in her situation, works against her. If she doesn't tell you that she's homeless and depressed, nobody would know. Also, depression is a psychological diagnosis, that has to be assessed by a licensed professional. Some people just feel tired, lazy or drank to much (not saying this about her, this is what the SSI ppl could be thinking), and start saying they are "depressed". I see why they say, she's not depressed enough, though. When she talks about people should provide jobs, to help people, if you don't want them in your backyard. If she feels like she can work a job, or wants to work a job...I don't think social security will acknowledge her "illness". Hence, the "not depressed enough" answer.

Been homeless a few times myself. A lot of people that live paycheck to paycheck working low wage jobs have that risk. 1 Missed check means homelessness if you dont have friends or family to help and a lot of people take that for granted. In-fact 2 of my friends I've known since middle school both were near homeless half a dozen times and every time their parents helped out and essentially saved them. My wifes ex husband is the same deal, he lost his job and didnt get another job for 7 months and his mom let him move in. That is everywhere and people seem to expect it, like everyone just has family to bear their burdens but the people that dont end up homeless like this and somehow they are worse than those other people? get real. The thing I hate most about people is how ignorant everyone seems to be when realizing the truth just takes a tiny bit of honesty on your part, but society's response is "Why be honest when you have an opportunity to put someone down?".

I have a friend who want to believe that there’s ‘no excuse’ to be homeless, you should be saving and investing, etc. we always argue because there are a multitude of circumstances that can eat up your money and but you in a bad situation. Even worse if you have a low paying job. I was out of work for over a year. Without family I would have been on the street. I was living on my savings but savings can’t get replenished.

They are competing with high skill professionals for living space, it is stupid Like yea I am empathetic for them... but I bet a lot of them have the opportunity to get into a good situation but they don't take action and then blame the government

What kind of person needs to throw Soda at or spit on someone that is homeless ? I know that every time I see someone that is homeless and in need I give them money or a meal. I can’t close my heart and mind to the suffering of others. When I see a mother in front of me at the food store but things back because she doesn’t have enough money I offer to pay. I’m grateful that I have a good life but I think that means I should help those I can.

that's what I'm saying! Even If I don't have anything to give, I'd NEVER consider dehumanizing someone living on the streets. I'm from a city where homelessness is sort of glamorized because there's a community of togetherness, and helpfulness. BUT, it's still one of those things we can't take lightly. There are people living on the street getting things thrown on them while a billionnaire is president is literally toying with the civil/economic rights of other humans. Insane.

For most women to give up make-up and perfume is like giving up hope and not being among the living. When you stop making yourself up that's when you've given up. These people are thinking they're making a fortune panhandling for Givenchy or Dior when the reality is like under $5 and Wet-N-Wild or NYX from a CVS. Especially if they're trying to present themselves to get side jobs to get by - no one's going to hire anyone who looks like a vagrant.
@nunyabidness8656

Tahsunda You're way off. I was once homeless and drug addicted. The only reason I got off the street and the drugs is from the help of a kind stranger (now my landlord). Of course some homeless people do bad things, just like some people who have homes do bad things. Some of them work jobs and still can't afford a home. From my experience most people on the streets have mental health issues (just as I did and still do). Some homeless people don't see their kids because their care takers don't allow them to, some don't because their embarrassed of their "lifestyle", some don't because they want to spare their children from having to worry about their situation, some have their kids while on the street and some don't see them because they just don't want to. Grouping all homeless people together is as silly as grouping all "homed" people together. When a city in texas decided to allow homeless people to work cleaning up the streets for pay, these people flooded in! Many people are desperate for work but just can't find any because their homeless. Do you realize how few people would actually employ a homeless person? If someone doesn't want to give people money or needed items, they don't have to but I will continue to do so. Once I give someone money/items it's their business what they do with it! I respect your opinion but i disagree!

I would do so, but I am facing possible homelessness myself due to disability and lack of assistance. My mom just died without a will and I don't have help. I don't have a way to go back to school to be qualified for less physically demanding work and hopefully be able to have medical/dental care to help with the pain. I have little worry about someone stealing from me, because these things are temporary anyway. But I think we would need to see eye to eye when it comes to God and our lives, then it's more likely I could trust them not to think they need to steal or anything else... But instead we could even help one another in different ways.

I'm Disabled, a Veteran, and have been homeless for two years. I'm not a drug addict, just lost my housing two years ago when the apartment complex I was living at was sold to a buyer in Toronto, who promptly notified the tenants living with Section 8 or VASH assistance they had the option to move out or pay full market value rent without assistance. I found while looking for a place to move to, that most low income housing in my area was eliminated in this same fashion by greedy investors and was unavailable to find another place to live. I bought an old van on payments and was forced to start living in it. I did so for a year and was offered a tiny fiberglass trailer on payments. I found that the person I bought it from had mislead me on a clear title, and have had difficulty getting it registered and legal to tow. I have been stranded at a Recreation Area, above Kingman Arizona for seven months now trying to get repairs done to my van. It is no longer safe to drive, and definitely not suitable to tow my trailer. It has been a living hell, upto 128 degrees at times this summer, now dealing with freezing cold at night and heavy winds. Every time I try to get some repairs made, something comes up. I bought a used generator which failed in a couple weeks, had to buy another one, then my emotional support dog Archie was badly bitten and required veterinary care, my air conditioning compressor failed in my Van, I cut my knuckle to the bone and ligaments on some glass discarding some trash which resulted in an Emergency Room Visit. I have been trying to get help, and have not had much success. I was accepted for PATH Rapid Rehousing through the Catholic Charities, but have searched all over Mohave County but found I cannot afford an apartment on my disability income. I have been looking for a room for rent, but no luck. So now I'm in a panic as I was notified by the Catholic Charities Caseworker handling my information, had their computer stolen and now my personal information has been compromised. I am on a waiting list for Section 8, basically started over. I did not choose to be in this homeless situation, and have been doing my best to deal with everything I have experienced the past 2 years. I had to literally give everything I owned away when I lost my apartment EVERYTHING!, I did try and keep my many tools, but those to were lost to a "friend" who was going but keep them until I get settled, but would never respond to my calls or texts. I am absolutely sick of my life. I don't live anymore, I merely exist, and it's not much of an existence at that. I have not showered in nearly 8 months, and haven't bathed in over two years since losing my apartment. My teeth are broken, many missing, and I broke another one recently, not looking forward to the toothache that's coming. I am nearly blind in one eye and can only see clearly with glasses, but I lost one of the lenses. I have reached out to every VA organization or service center I know of for help, but am ineligible. I worked for the Air Force starting my senior year of high school, as a civilian employee and for the next decade. I also simultaneously served 6 years in the Air National Guard, and was honorably discharged, but still don't meet the requirements as I was on active duty for well over a year with Avionics Technical School, and was activated during Desert Storm, but could not deploy with my unit, as I was a 3 level technician straight out of school. I have no family for support, no friends, only a few people I have met while being homeless. I have had a fellow vet brings some water bottles and food items several months back, and just today was given a propane tank, heavy sleeping bag, and nice winter coat by Catholic charities, these were definitely a blessing and will definitely help, but I don't see how I can ever get out of my situation as my limited income doesn't suffice to handle the many needs I currently have trying to get out of my homeless situation along with handling my major dental problems, lack now of a safe vehicle, and trailer registration. Any day the area I am staying may be closed, the BLM Rangers have told me they plan to close access to this Recreation Area soon. I will be in an Emergency Situation when they do, and have no idea yet what I will do.

These stories break my heart, they truly do. Arien is an exceptionally bright, smart, together young lady. I'm surprised she has held it together for so long without having a breakdown or developing PTS syndrome from all she has experienced and witnessed on the streets of L.A. I feel so helpless, and I imagine a lot of people do. These "Invisible People" segments truly put a human face on the homeless crisis. Lately, I pass homeless people and I understand why some of them self-medicate: Life can be extremely painful, and sometimes you just want to numb the hurt. It's definitely not a solution to anyone's problems, but for the first time in my 55 years, I can now understand it. I believe homeless housing can work in many neighborhoods, so long as social services professionals are available onsite and the most responsible, stable residents are deputized to operate and manage the environment. Many of the people featured in these segments have these leadership qualities: They just need the resources to become stable and the support to develop these skills to put them into practice.

Nunya, I've considered helping homeless persons by allowing them to get off the streets and have a home base to get on their feet. I truly want to help people whom can't help themselves however, I've seen others whom did allow persons to live with them and in every case, it was a disaster for all parties involved and the homeless went right back to being homeless while the helpers refused to ever help another homeless person again. What did you do to insure a successful out come?

Why can't she go to a temp agency and try to be an office worker or go to a supermarket and try to get a job as a clerk? I don't understand how she can go on begging in the street with how mean people are. Isn't it easier to just get a job? Why wouldn't they hire her? She looks nice and is polite. If there is no help from the social services, then why not just try to work? If she has a steady income, she can maybe get a room with roommates. I feel like there must be some deeper reason this is going on.

Babu OK, you're homeless. You go get an application and start filling it out. Name: everyone has one Address: whoops! Think they'll take "third doorway past 5th and Main" as an address?
@KatyGroves
@KatyGroves 6 лет назад
She's shared in a previous interview that she worked as a security guard multiple times, but kept losing her jobs when her employers found out she was homeless. It is really hard to find work and keep work when you don't have an address! A lot of people do not want to employ the homeless by default, even if you're a great employee. It's also common for people on the street to develop learned helplessness. After awhile, they give up. Mark has talked about that on this channel before and I have experienced it having been homeless and sold before. It's a natural consequence of long-term trauma, may not have been an issue for the person before, and may not be possible to overcome without adequate professional assistance that may not be available when you are extremely poor. Edit: I see at the end that Mark mentioned learned helplessness and Arien said she has not accepted her situation. I still stand by what I said, as I imagine that it has still affected her to some degree. Even if a person doesn't completely give up, it seems unavoidable to me that homelessness would drag a person down. For most people it is one hell of a trauma.

If you get money you go to the post office and get a PO box, then you have an address. It used to cost only $15 for a year. You can also get one at FedEx i believe or Mailboxes Etc., those kind of shipping places. You need some imagination and skills. She seems smart enough though.
@KatyGroves

Babu Employers may still be suspicious if you do not have a street address and they can still find out that you are homeless through other channels.

You might get depressed for a while but then you have to look at your situation and make your best effort to pull yourself up. You can't wallow in your helplessness forever. It is part of growing up. What do you mean you were sold, were you trafficked as in human trafficking? Sometimes you have to lie and say you have a place if that is what it takes. I can't imagine someone firing a good working just because of their home.

Two year wait for Section 8 housing in my area. 10 year wait is crazy. It's like even Section 8 is telling the homeless to jump, to have the wait be 10 years. And, people should be glad that Mark got the other lady a van, and not judge him for not getting her an apartment. She now has something. It keeps her dry during rain, and it's a place to sleep, besides the side walk, and she can turn the heat on in winter, and it's her own domain. Yes, it's not an apartment, but we should be happy about the van. At least it's something. People make it a point to judge, and I want to yell at the judgmental. It's sickening and tiring that the homeless run into thousands of judgmental people, and MAYBE one or two aren't judgmental. Today, I saw a guy wearing a shirt that said, "Only God can judge me," and I wanted to tell him, "Nice shirt." Like Mark said, hopefully his next interview with Arien will be in her living room.

Theres power in numbers. Martin Luther King taught us that. The rich are very afraid of the growing number of poor around them. At any moment thousands could easy over run a single neighborhood before any police could stop them. The wealthy need to stop and think that the protections they THINK will protect them are really non existent. Look at New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. Entire communities got overtaken once the supplies and help were no longer there due to government mismanagement. I never condone violence but there is going to be a time in the near future when the have-nots are going to far out number the wealthy. And when social structures continually break down, people are just going to mob together in the thousands and take whatever they need.

If her depression keeps ongoing she should receive treatment, she is a force of nature to keep her smile during the interview. She has a beautiful smile by the way. She could be in the beauty industry, something like a hairdresser, makeup artist. Or in the healthcare industry as a personal health worker, her smile would lighten up the pains of the patients and comfort them. But first, let's take care of her.

Arien, you said on another video that previously you worked as a security guard. if you could move here to Phoenix, AZ, I really think your living situation would improve as the cost of living is much cheaper than California. Once your get your unarmed security guard card, security companies will be fighting over you to be employed with them. The class is an 8am -4pm class (easy as fuck! U show up and stay entire time, you get your guard card which expires every 2years). The last one I took gave you a 10 min break at the last 10mins. of the hour + a look lunch break from 12pm -1pm. Below is the address/phone number/email address to the Department of Public Safety and Licensing. Contact them before you move out here for certain!!! Make certain that they are able to look license you so it isn't a waste of your time/money!!! If you've been on the street in California for 4 years unable to get yourself help, chances are they probably never will help you! So, contact the office below to make certain there is nothing in your past which would disqualify you from obtaining your Arizona GuardCard. if there isn't, hitchhike, save up to buy a bus ticket and get out here to Phoenix!!! TRUST ME, ONCE YOU HAVE YOUR AZ GUARDCARD, COMPANIES WILL BE ALMOST FIGHTING OVER U TO GET YOU TO WORK FOR THEM!!! Please look into this Arien! I don't believe u will ever receive aid there in California and their homeless population is equal in size to like 4 other states in the country! Again, contact this department first to make certain you qualify to be licensed for an AZ GUARDCARD. Then, get out here to Phoenix so we can get you employed FT!!! love you Arien!!! I was homeless as an adolescent, I use to sit at the interchange and eat peoples left overs then lock myself in the bathroom to sleep a little when trains got cleaned. I'd ride the first train in the morning to the end of the line to get sleep. Then I'd have passengers wake me asking if I was getting off ( looking around I'd see the school kids ) I felt my chest hurt like it would break open and tears would flood out. It was hard, I whent through alot, I never finished school etc etc but now I have my own business and although I'm far from rich and struggle to pay rent etc I'm not a free loader and I take 0% from the government!

SMH !!! I am so tired of people saying "please set up a GoFundMe account for such and such , I really want to help them!". And then when the person DOES finally have a GoFundMe account then they get judged because they've received (in their opinion) "alot of money". As If things don't take TIME to come together SMH ! Some of you are just so ignorant, it's actually very sad !!! Many of you are saying that the $6,000 that has been donated through GoFundMe is her "way out", and you're complaining asking why is she still homeless eventhough people have donated to help her.... Number one, It's not that simplistic!!!! She lives in CALIFORNIA (As do I). Do any of you know the cost of living out here ???? Remember, to get an apartment you need to have first and last months rent. Right ! AND you also need to be able to pay your rent on time to avoid eviction ! At minimum she'll find an apartment for $1,000/month in CA ! So deposit w/first month that's already $2,000, PLUS any necessities that she'll need (such as possible down payment $$$ towards lights/gas, and personal hygiene products cost money as well) !! PLUS she'll have to PAY her rent every month thereafter !!! That's already around $2,500-$3,000 out of pocket ! Leaving her with $3,000 more or less. If her rent is $1,000 a month (which is STANDARD in CA for a 1 bedroom)! Then that leaves her with only 3 months of rent but what about other expenses like her living expenses?!? And keep in mind it's not that easy to find a job, especially if you only have minimal or not any work experience!!!! So basically she'll be homeless again within 3 months possibly ! (If unable to find a job) . Some of guys are so judgemental, and hypocritical when you have NO CLUE what any of these people are going through or HAVE went through! smh!!!!! Stop throwing stones when you live in a glass house !!!!!! SMH

Thank you. What’s interested is that every person that’s saying $6k over 9 months should have gotten her out of homelessness, if they received $10k, they would maybe pay of some debts and buy a new TV, maybe travel a bit - but their life’s would not be better in the long run. It may be better for a month or two, but that’s it - and yet they judge a homeless person.

Luvly Cee now you know people don’t think like that. It sounds too much like common sense. They think the $10,000 she raised is going to last her an entire lifetime. I wish she were here where I live. There are so many programs for the homeless here and they are always provided with job leads and people willing to employ them. I went to school and we literally had people who were actually homeless. The school got together and provided a lot of assistance for them and students put together to donate. You would be so amazed at what can happen when people pull together and can do. At the same time, those students pulled through and they were able to get immediate employment while they were in school and when they finished school. I still go back to the school because the owner is actually a pastor. He guides me sometimes when I’m going through rough times.

Awe I remember her, I was hoping and praying that she had found a home ..i don't know how she does it, she's so beautiful and so smart.. She really doesn't deserve to be out on the streets, God bless her ♥
