Your tank has a good construction, but no track auto tension. After not long use, the full-metal caterpillar may stretch and there will be problems. Better add a tensioner, like a real tank, until the work under transmission is not finished yet. I mean this thing: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Sm2i19CIL-Y.html&ytbChannel=null

idk why people are hating on this dude. i mean cmon, the amount of time spent on the tank is long. and most likely you cant even do something better or the same. "bad craftmanship" yeah pal, really "bad" also this isnt a tank factory. its a garage.

Excellent work. Machinist tip: When you have a lot of repetitive work, build a jig fixture to position the work in so you do not have to measure every single piece. One for your chop saw. One for your drill press.

Pro historical tip: if you want tracks to be more secure, you have to add small dots to every part of track as well as to every wheel add a little hole trough witch the wheels will push the dots and thus push the track as a whole. Look up tracks in tanks like: german panzer 3 or some newer tanks like Abrams and t70. Still great job and keep it up. Can't wait to see the final version.
@teeodee4924

How are the tracks going to be driven? There needs to be spokes or similar for the drive wheels to make the tracks move. Smooth wheels will just spin inside the tracks.

I wouldn't have used that particular way of connecting the track links, but in this case those slightly dome headed bolts, similar to a stove bolt, would more than likely work and stop the binding of the hex headed bolts.

@Dockhead
@Dockhead 4 года назад
yeah true, but the track and wheel system do need properly doing, as it didn't look like the wheels traveled flush within the shape of the track and them tracks need some form of cover and strengthening since the stress from wheels etc and no track tension will lead to wear which isn't repairable other than re doing it again, tracks might get exposed to rusting when they wear on the hard ground. also use locktite just as a attempt of safety of holding the bolts in as they might rattle and come lose if not torqued up, although this 'tank' isnt exactly a tank but then again he only has the hull structure made atm, a shell and engine and drive gear are going to add far more weight than the structure right now.

Good job man. Until here. But, i ve two questions: 1 - How do you intend to transmit engine powering to tracks? You don´t have theeth insite of tracks or wheels. 2 - Your project is getting heavy weight. Witch kind of engine (s) do you intend to use? Congrats for your work. Cheering for you! I don't know about an idle wheel.. I think you should have an idle wheel that's spring loaded so it keeps the track tight.... I have a feeling when you get this built the tracks are going to come off when you try to turn this thing... VERY COOL IDEA I absolutely love it.. can't wait to see it when it's done... I have a great idea but nowhere to build it so I have to just hold off for a bit.. but good luck to you, keep going...

How and where do you plan to use this, or is it just to build it? Very curious about how you plan to deal with the following things, 1) suspension 2) track tension 3) drive sprockets 4) track stiffness

Well, this is the first thing on this tank that actually works as intended, so kudos to that. And since you just use car rims, a centerguide isnt necessary, but if you dont add a drive sprocket to drive this track, you´re in for a disappointing experience. Just throwing it out there, if you dont know.
@brucemitch928
@brucemitch928 4 года назад
DarkestVampire92 Thinking the same thing but I’m guessing he’ll be welding bars onto the steel rims to catch and drive on the track plates.
@rolfnilsen6385
@rolfnilsen6385 4 года назад
Drive sprocket is absolutely needed - and probably a belt tensioning device. Since there is no centerguide and runners for them, and the outside guides are pretty low better not take too much dirt inside the tracks before turning. Thats when the tracks get thrown off. (Leopard 1 operator here)

the connecting Links are the weakpoint of the trackchain construction. Take the links weld round steel bars in there . Make solid trackchainlocks out of 3times the thinkness of your current ones with 2holes for the bars and connect the holes with a slit.. drill the Locks 90degrees in the middle and thread one side for the screws i know its much more work but it will last and wont end with some seriuos injuries. Rotating metal pieces are realy dangerous. Look at some real tanks their track construction you need to copy as best as you could for stiffness and torsion stability. A steelbar should be welded to the tracks to give them something to grip into the ground otherwise it will tent be very slippery and in combination with a thoothless drivewheel has the potential to kill you and /or someone else too.

There is no way to move the idler wheel to tension the tracks. This may be a problem
@antoninperbosc1532
@antoninperbosc1532 4 года назад
Yes all excavator and other stuff with tracks request a tension system, because when you work the tracks warmup and dilate.
@chrisknight6884
@chrisknight6884 4 года назад
I agree, the drive system is purely friction it appears, metal on metal. As soon as there is any wear, the tracks will stretch. With no means to adjust the tension, very soon you will lose drive. I am sure you will resolve it though. 👍
@antoninperbosc1532
@antoninperbosc1532 4 года назад
Agree with you about frictions in this DIY. On excataor a track is a chain, one motor gear and some followers gears. I think he must make holes in each whell and weld on the rear or on front "whell gear" a botle jack in order to tensionning the track. The inflate wheel must be replaced by whell with a groove or other solution replace by thinner whell and work by pair to act as rail who keep tooths inline.

A better idea for the bolts on the track would be carriage bolts. The domed heads would not have the friction that the hex bolts do.
@etech2xwon59
@etech2xwon59 4 года назад
I was thinking the same thing. Maybe even give them a tack weld on quadrants to keep them from moving around. Would have to grind part of the "square" under the head off to keep hole in matting piece round. I mean if he is going to do all the work he already has??? I'm sure he has already thought about it. Heck, a large dia. fine thread button head bolt would be better, but expensive. All are temporary as they will wear rapidly one would think. To get best operation IMHO a Flathead in a countersink would solve a lot of problems with wear and friction.
