I will be harvesting the very long and very heavy logs for the workshop roof. i needed to build a log arch to move them around. I puchased some box section and started welding it up. i have not tested it fully yet but it will be getting out through its paces this week when i start felling and moveing the 8.5m long roof logs.

As a boilermaker I'd say you did well mate. Just one bit of advice. If your welder is getting hot and you want to give it a rest don't just turn it off. Leave it running for 10 minutes first before turning off will help cool it down more effectively. Great work mate

Absolute genius. You rrally are the Chief O'Brien when it comes to projects, thinking on your feet, and launching into something based entirely on a rough image in your head. If I were putting a nuclear bunker team together, you would be exactly the guy to lead the rebuild in a post disaster scenario. Great work.

Good job! Kris. Don't Skid your logs with that nice winch. First put a, Tow Strap around the log's front, leaving one eye. Hook a chain to that eye and up to the upside down "Y". A lot stronger. Skid your logs up to where you can get at it, and reset the log on your Carrier with the winch and straps. Have fun!

Clever contraption. For really heavy loads you might want to consider welding gussets to the joints that are not reinforced by structural supports. Gussets take a lot of tension of the butt joints and don't interfere with the structure. Regarding your welding: I have seen much worse produced by people who make their living with welding! :-)

I'm no welder and one thing I know for sure is welds don't need to look pretty to be GOOD WELDS and all pretty welds are NOT good welds I think yours are fine great project!

Great little project! Just a tip, unless you thought of it yourself. Did you disconnect your 4x4 battery before welding as you could fry your electrics in your truck as the tow bar is bolted to the chassis obviously and your welder is chucking all that voltage through your vehicle. Great job though! Looks cool!

That’s a great looking trailer. I believe that for trailers to be road legal in the UK they also need red triangular reflectors on the rear.
@Wolfyjinny
@Wolfyjinny 5 лет назад
When lifting the logs with the front up against the upside-down V make sure the off centre weight does not put too much lift on the ball hitch, it can either pop the ball hitch or start lifting the rear of the van, in the second case it can cause snaking, loss of breaking, and loss of control of the van.

Not for nothing but if you're running that shielded metal arc welding (SMAW/ "stick") electrode properly mill scale is the least of your worries on this. The size of the base metal, ie the wall thickness of that square tube is going to be your Achilles heel. Edit: your welds look fine.

you could have something for the logs to rest on if you built in a few bars on hinges. They could be pulled out across the bottom. under the log, and clipped down on the other side if you get my drift.From one side of the frame to the other. That way the log would actually have a base to rest on. Just an idea / thought.
@SuperGrover
@SuperGrover 5 лет назад
If you raise the log, slide a couple of rails across the trailer then lower the log onto them it will be way more stable in transit.

as a retiard coded welder son, them weld's will hold up well did you know a weld 1" ling & a 5'mm thick weld with good penetration will shear at 50 tone and that is a standard tack. If you grins a slit v angle on a bit of steel box . & weld it flat at 2" full waded & driest flat . will be = to a 3mm weld & that welds will hold (200'ton) before shearing fact it will collapse before bending in the application you going to ues it for . Now it will shear. at twice the lowd, if one put a signal weld over the top of each weld. & it would dubbed to 400 ton but it will bend before it shears. in the application you are to apply it to A suitable valid weld with a slit 1mm gap will allow the weld to penitent forming a root to the weld so it ferns a weld on the insider of the steel you are welding & the resulting fill weld will fit the v that is sufficient adding a second cap weld. after depressing is Belt a brasses & is often the profred choice . for aesthetics but not unessersery it a very good job👍💖

Be v careful with no hitch weight on trailer. With the balance of a long log it will lift on the hitch and make your van unstable.

I think it's a great build, but I think you should add braces from the front of the upright down to the sides angling out from the hitch. Those heavy logs will wreak havoc on that upright weld there when they swing when you're moving, even if it's just a little bit of swinging. Better to have something over engineered than under. Anyway, that's my opinion. Thanks for sharing the video.

I always learned that a trailer should transfer as little as possible downward weight to the rear suspension of the car. That's why 2 wheel trailers have the wheels in the middle. The car is just for pulling not lifting. Although I think you'll be fine.

Kris, I'm sure you've considered this but make sure you don't overload the towing capacity of your van. Apart from being dangerous, PC Plod will hand out significant fines if your load is too heavy.

The van can tow about 2 ton no problem but this will only be loaded with logs off road. it will only ever go on road empty to get it to where i am going to move logs on forestry tracks and on my property. i wont be moving logs on the road with it.

Hi Kris, super job on your new toy. I'm no welder either but it looks really good and all this experience goes a long way. I see Dot's a dab hand with a brush, maybe you should teach her to weld? I don't know if you follow April Wilkerson on youtube but she recently made a gantry thing attachment for logging with her trailer, worth a look. If you were using this on the road would you need some kind of crossmember(s) to rest the load on? Stay safe and keep up the good work.

Interestigly enough the first ever motorised vehicle was a "charrier", a cannon carrier designed to lift and transport napoleonian type cannons the same way you lift logs with your trailer.
@jaynorthpen

For road legal do you need a safety chain (secondary coupling that loops from the vehicle frame to the trailer)? That way if it disconnects it stays with the vehicle and doesn't end up in some poor buggers living room :D
