I wanted to be able to easily lift logs onto the dump trailer so I decided to build a log arch. In this video I got to try it out for the first time and unfortunately things didn't go as planned

I love how you teach your son. That is extremely hard to do especially when you're already frustrated. Much respect to you. Also, I love your trailer and am looking into creating one myself

Hey I was sent your video as I was building one myself. Maybe a suggestion, I know I'm doing to mine, adding a removable pin on the top rail or chain stop, so when the arch comes back it doesn't slam or hit you 😂. But awesome build. Just purchased a sawmill and now I need to carry the logs. Have fun and happy holidays.

Thanks for showing all parts of the video. It’s not easy putting that out there. The mill will be that much better when it arrives.

Yeah, it’s pretty embarrassing but I thought it needed to be shown.

Hey buddy! i have made one also. i kick the wench out of gear then pull out slack past the end of the bed. then put it back in gear hook the the cable and push the a frame out. It saves on the wench, and battery, and you don`t need your remote to be longer. great job on the trailer.

Your channel is very informative. I look forward to each video you release. I've been heavy into offroading for years with my vehicle of choice being a 1975 Jeep CJ5. All of my 4 wheel drive vehicles have Warn winches, even my Ram 2500. (I retrofit the integrated power wagon winch so it has a clean look) Over the years I've seen too many winch cables snap either from overload or at a kink from respooling poorly. As you know, snapping a winch cable under load is usually a very violent and potentially deadly situation. To avoid that, I've swapped all my cables to synthetic rope. It's lighter, stronger and doesn't store energy like traditional cable does, so much safer. You might consider the swap. It's a bit pricey, but the piece of mind is worth the investment in my opinion. Plus, a snatch block placed at the arch might also help for lifting heavier logs. Again, thank you for posting such insightful content.

The way you handle those Oh "S" moments and keep your cool is awesome. Maybe weld steak pockets on the outside of the trailer so you could make removable log arch catchers. Some square tube and c channel. And good call on the winch blanket. Looks reallly good man.

squarecrow 68 the trailer has steak pockets so I will probably do something like that.

learning where to set the chain on the log to leave enough slack to remove it easily (before the arch extends past 90*) will come with practice/experience. The blanket thing is a learning thing as well. There's a lot going on and a lot to "worry" about as you're loading logs w/an arch. Be careful/safe is #1. Would suggest a chain grab from the arch to the trailer that allows you to tilt the arch toward the back 10-20* and tie it to the trailer so it's still upright. That allows you to easily disconnect the winch line and attach it to the log to finish pulling it in the front of the trailer. It sounds like more work, but once the log has started up on the trailer safely, it's a lot faster to drag it than reset the arch 2-4 times. Once log is in place, re-attach the winch to the arch and pick up the next log. Good luck with it and excellent example you're showing your son. Congrats on getting it built. They really do help a lot and save wear/tear on your winch/trailer and are very functional

Agreed, I think I need a lot more practice to get the slack needed. I do plan on pulling with the winch once I get the log on the trailer unless I need to get it up onto a row of logs already in the trailer.

Hey nice video! Just wondering why the arch needs to pivot. It seems like having it fixed in place with a snatch block would be less trouble? Since it's a dump trailer, you could just raise the dump a little to tilt the arch aft if needed.

How about at the top of your arch you put a snatch block and run your cable through it and down to log. Then on each side of arch to the trailer a chain that will only go in 45 deg angle for light logs and closer to 90 deg for heavy logs. Just a ideal, catching the arch could become a problem.

@shaweehillsworkshop4226 3 года назад
I do plan on adding a snatch block, for that and for doubling back to the winch if needed.

Get a small 18 gauge extension cord, cut and add plugs to your remote wire then you always have a way to extend your remote. And you scare me when you stand between the arch and winch, not good!!
