Homemade aluminum-air battery I - high power

Simple but powerful battery can be done using some materials from the kitchen: aluminum foil, paper for a membrane, active carbon for an air electrode, and an iron mesh for a current collector. The Al-air battery is more energy dense than a Li-ion battery.
In the chemical equation the redox potential should be -2.3 V instead of -1.66 V.
This aluminum-air battery was designed by Tavo Romann (PhD).

Then first know what harm could NaOH cause to yor children. If you don't know, then read the labels on a drain cleaner. I wouldn't let my children play with it.

wow 1.5+ volts that is the highest power homemade battery I have seen anywhere and especially to be that size a tic tac case I can only imagine what you could do with a few of them some in series to increase voltage then wire each pair in parallel to double the maH they could be very useful damn them lemon batteries you would need 20 of them to create the power you did with just one of your design...wow new subscriber earned

That's not HIGH POWER by definition in Electrical Engineering. That will struggle to charge smart phones but bar phones should be acceptable. You should have added more cells.

Hi, if these are tic tac 100 sized cells and cathodes are as good as here and electrolyte is 10% NaOH then 1A and 1V per cell - in series 8 V and 1 A (but for a minute only, then current will fall several times). With more advanced cathodes (superaccu.com) 1.1 V and 2 A per cell several hours straight. With more advanced cathode and anode (superaccu.com) 1.4 V and 2 A per cell several hours.

Overall the reaction looks like literally burning the Aluminium. Al + O2 I tried it and the Aluminium burns quickly.... Is it reversible ?

Sodium hydroxide is toxic and its high enough cause tissue damage. How to neutralize toxic and damage to human and nature/environment. is there any nature friendly chemicals exists ?

I think toxic is not correct word - it is corrosive. Can be neutralized with acetic acid. However, it is used as sewage cleaning liquid so there is not problem to flush it in toilet

i only get them up to 0.9v but i use salt water the anodes live allot longer and drive an led for months :-) i also use 3 in series and build them in jam jars

Depends on the electrolyte and purity of Al. Worst case scenario is indeed a few minutes; however, we have used some configuration full day at constant power.

My question is how long does it last before it goes dead and if you scale this up to like lets say 4 foot by 2 foot what voltage you would get how much amps it would put out and how long would it last before going dead

Depends, directly this homemade version won't last long but we have already made modifications , so that it can last for a day.

Thank you for your video! I have a question, when I tried to replicate your battery we only get a current of about 20 mA. (voltage is about 1 V) What things can I do to increase the current? I am using steel wool for the current collector which I found to work better than stainless steel mesh and probably a higher concentration of NaOH than you used.

+Z Zegers You can try adding activated carbon to the steel wool. It could be a good composite. I bought some steel wool for battery experiments but haven't tested it so far

These are half-reaction voltages. Sum these to get full voltage. However real voltage - 1.5 V is lower as efficiency is not 100%

Theoretical voltage is 2.7 V (there is a mistake in the video), practical is up to 1.5 V. Thus efficiency is less than 1.5/2.7=56%

Have you tested the mAh of these and the weight? Im curious how high the wh/kg can get. These have to be used after putting in the electrolyte right as the aluminium starts degrading from the NaOH or KOH right?

You simply make a lead acid battery from two identical pieces of lead in a Sulfuric acid electrolyte. Then repeated charging and discharging conditions one plate as positive forming PbO4 and some lead sulphate and the other as pure lead. Repeated cycling also make the electrode surfaces somewhat porous which increases capacity and power. Commercial lead acid batteries is made from a lead and lead oxide paste stamped onto a lead grid, to avoid that tedious repeated conditioning charging to get it going, but for DIY simply get some roofing lead and make a giant lead acid cell for cheaps.

6 cells average voltage 6 V, Ah depend on how proffessional are electrodes and design - could be within 0.2 and 50 Ah

I'm confused. In electrolytic processes for making hydrogen or brown gas the electrodes have to be made of stainless steel. Other metals do corrode away in no time when submerged in hydroxide solutions. Looking at this setup my assumption would be that this situation is similar. Basically what happens is that electrons are passing from one electrode to the other. Can you please explain why you think your battery would function in any different way?

getreal155 surely Al corrodes and dissolves, but in a controllable way. When electrochemical dissolution takes place it competes to and reduces the normal corrosion a lot (up to orders of magnitude).

Copper would work as air electrode, albeit at very low current densities. But with CuSO4 it would be a battery and Cu would deposit on aluminum I think

With aqueous NaOH electrolyte it is electrically not rechargeable. With AlC3-ionic liquid electrolyte, the Al.ion battery is rechargeable.

Frenchie NaCl is white powder in your kitchen. And look in WC or bathroom for NaCl solution, which is used to clean sewage pipes

there are different drain cleaners, look on the label whats inside. I found a really powerfull,cheap and simple one its a white powder(Sodium hydroxide) with some aluminium grains in it (~2-5% i guess)

2.7V is theoretical voltage, 1.5 V is practical due to nonconducting aluminum oxide layer on aluminum. This is why it is not in market, but developments are going on

The air cathodes are made of activated carbon from a water filter, which is glued onto a kitchen strainer mesh with epoxy glue. All homemade stuff.

air is a misnomer. Anything that uses carbon and aluminum is really just an aluminum carbon battery. Air isn't needed. If you pump oxygen into it, it will boost voltage from 1.4 to 1.6 but is not needed. Hydrogen peroxide does the same thing.

Only put in small amount of fluid ..thus less wet surface area. 1. Would full tic tac vessel of fluid increase output on larger wet contact area? 2. How long before it goes flat like my old wife's chest. 3. When flat, how to recharge? Thank you for nice videos.

No, because it would reduse flow of oxygen to the electrode. However, dropping new electrolyte constantly gives better results. At full power ~20 min or at low power using pure Al it lasts many hours. When it is done, open, soak cathode with water and dry. Next day, new battery can be assembled reusing the cathode.

I just watched ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ar3C5JgzhgE.html He uses alloy and carbon, and does full wetness coverage like my old wife with full tube of ky love cream ... but turns into a capacitor that needs external charging first (no fun in apocalypse). If I flood the tic tac box, then add external power, would yours act as capacitor? Sorry for silly questions. I am very old, out of love cream and almost dead.

Just connector a motor and see yourself. Adding electrolyte after each X min will increase lifetime.

@@chemicum because I have a used laptop battery, I tested using a multi meter, there is no more voltage, I mean I want to fill the lithium ion battery electrolyte, who knows after filling the electrolyte the battery can still be used again 😅

Depends on design, Al-air can give at least twice energy density than Li-.ion. The single Tic-Tac cell is able to charge a mobile phone

Dude, this is totaly wrong. This is Galvanic cell, not Metal-air battery (a type of Fuel cell). Why do you add NaOH?, you should only add NaCl to make it Metal-air battery. NaOH will react with Al to make NaAlO2. Next time do your homework before uploading videos! Al-Galvanic cell: Al + NaOH + H2O → NaAlO2 + H2 Al-air battery: Al + O2 → Al2O3

any battery is galvanic cell, including this aluminum-air battery. If using high purity aluminum and high current density, it almost does not react with hydroxide. With NaOH this battery gives 1 W power, but we also tested that with NaCl electrolyte it gives 0.01 W only.

@@Qifa80 not sure. The idea is to use hydrophobic string to tie up so oxygen can pass to cathodes. If paper is wrapped around and covers all cathode then it will wet and stops oxygen diffusion

It probably won't work, but it would be fun testing. Other oxidizers are known to work, such as KClO, H2O2, or KMnO4

It lasts 20-40 minutes if using thinnest Al foil 10-20 um thick) and nearly full power. Thicker Al plates can be used to increase the lifetime, adding additional amount of electrolyte after 30 min, boosts power and voltage.

Thats not an air battery leave out the holes leave the activated charcoal out everything else the same and you will get the same results. Its called an earth battery and works between the copper wire and aluminum

The earth battery is technically also an air battery - it is the oxygen reduction reaction that is taking place at cathode. Note that in a classical Zn/Cu element the Cu electrode is in CuSO4 solution, but there is no such thing in earth, lemon, etc. This aluminum-air battery gives nearly one amper due to high surface area of carbon, but with only current collector it would give only a few milliampers.

Indeed Al have to be replaced mechanically but the carbon cathode can be used many times. Yet it is several times more energy dense than lithium batteries. They are both 10% so the molarity of NaOH is ~2.5 M and in the mixture it is 1.3 M.

+chemicum thank you! may I know if the thickness of aluminium foil (sandpapered) affects it? will the graphite electrode 'expire'? i tried with two cells and it provides approx 2.6 to 2.8 V. it did move my motor, however the next day we tried it, the motor didnt move anymore and the current level is low...

2.6-2.8V? Two cells in series connection? Hydroxide absorbs CO2 from air and Al corrodes in NaOH - that is why it should be used up quickly.

You would get 0.85 V and a few milliampers - the latter of course depend on the surface area. Aluminium batteries work better in alkaline solution.

it does. But Al2O3 won't go back to Al. Not in aqueous system. Porous carbon gives much higher current density than smooth Cu.

Hello, I have made an air,aluminium battery but I used as electrolyte calcium hidroxide with calcium chloride, and It produced up to 2 volts in opened circuit, with the disadvantage that it gave less current though.

It may work with EMIm AlCl4 ionic liquid. However, it is extremelt moisture sensitive and chlorine (or AlCl4) evolves at one electrode. This system has been claimed indeed being reversibly rechargeable, but it is not Al-air battery and has lower energy density.

K WC The air cathode was prepared from a mesh used in the kitchen to cover pan in order to catch oil splashes. It can be found in supermarkets. The mesh was coated with a thin epoxy layer and then active carbon dust was poured onto it. Then it was held under pressure until the epoxy was hardened.

K WC You may try copper, but carbon should have a good contact with current collector. However, it also possible to build without glue, but then the case have to pressure the large carbon particles against current collector.

K WC This type of battery only does not last very long. Commercial Al-air batteries use ultrapure Al to reduce corrosion, but it is very very expensive and not available household. Thus, use with maximum power density until to the end or take the Al out if you want to stop using it.
