THANK YOU ! you saved me lots of money.we have the roof racks already just added your set up of bolts to middle of roof rack and now we can take 2x kayaks & 2 bikes on the top of pop up. I knew there had to be a way , THANKS AGAIN!!
I have done similar racks but using half of a door hinge instead of your screw eyes and a standard skewer instead of your threaded rod. I did a rack that fit inside a mini-van and another that mounted on top of a van. Works very well.
Just finished making this today. Only thing I did differently was I trimmed down the center pieces so that it fits more snuggly and doesn’t put too much pressure on the camper roof.
I am going to try a single threaded rod with washers and nuts spaced all the way across. The parts cost less than $15 and I can move the fasteners to accommodate more or less bikes.
This is an awesome idea. I watched the video and made on of these yesterday. It turned out awesome. I made one small modification to it that I think will help secure the rack better. I'm planning on using it for a 6 hour trip to Arkansas later this week. I'll let you know how it turned out.
I did this same project for my pop-up. I used a similar setup to the one you showed, for securing the front forks to a 2x6 board using 5/16" threaded rod that I cut up into sections for each bike. I then used bolts, nuts, washers and eye-bolts. Only difference is that I attached the 2x6 board to perforated metal tubing using "L" brackets. I then secured the square tubing to the frame of the pop-up at the front by the tongue. End result is the only thing touching the camper roof are the rear tires of the bikes. Great way to pack along bikes for a trip!
I was planning to build a rack off of the tongue using unistrut, but I'm thinking I might just go this route. I might buy the actual fork locks though. Great job.
Jeremy, thanks a lot for the idea and video. Sorry for my slowness, but how do you have the strap holding down the wood? Does it go all the way across the wood or are you using sturdy eye hooks or something on each end of the wood to hook the straps to?
Quick question.... did you put the front strap IN FRONT of the forks, or in BACK or them. I would think that the wind would push the bikes backward, so putting the front strap in BACK of the forks would work, but from the video it seemed like you put the strap in front of the front forks. Just curious if you check this thread anymore.
Does anyone still check comments??? Great video and I built this this weekend but I am not sure how to keep it secured to my camper. I have a strap but it doesn't seem to do the trick keeping it secure... going camping this weekend... suggestions on straps????? Or another way????
I was very nervous putting my brand new beach cruiser on this rack. ru-vid.comUgkxG6JIgwJhur8_Rg8UeQ3EmePzi_wSncL8 But after reading many reviews I decided to get this one and take a chance. When arrived it was very simple to adjust and put together. I also added spike tape over the metal hooks before securing and tightening the straps, and no scratches. I also purchased the top bar made by the same company so that my cruiser sits straight on the rack without having to turn upside down. Extra bungee cords are used to secure the front wheel from flapping and even piece of mind knowing your bike is secure. Definitely recommend...
