Homemade coaxial helicopter rotor blade close up

The first rotor blade complete except end closures. Not saying this is 100% the correct way to make a rotor blade, I have not built a rotor blade before but it is the way I have chosen and the results are to be established.
Making the rotor blades is certainly one of the more challenging aspects of building a helicopter. If you can do that successfully chances are the rest of it will be achievable. There is a huge amount of time in making the blades and the materials certainly add up.
Airfoil NACA 0012
Chord 4.75"
Blade weight 2.6kg
Rotor diameter 4.3m
Tip speed 453 mph
Centripetal force 2.7 tonnes
Blade yield strength 13.4 tonnes
Blade fatigue strength 5.2 tonnes
Rotor solidity 0.07 :1
Disc loading 1.625lbs/ft2
Rotor rpm 900 (now reduced to 750rpm)

Hello, thanks for your comment, I'm happy to share any knowledge I can, there are a few pictures on the build photo video showing the blade spars being machined on my milling machine. A milling machine and knowledge of how to use it is really what you need to make these blades, if you don't have this then there are alternatives using wooden blades for instance. I will post another video soon. Thanks

Thank you, there's a couple things I would do differently next time and I'm busy testing these blades now. It’ seems the airfoil is symmetrical and those type of profiles typically have less area of pressure travel. If so why apparent reflex in the trailing edge? Is this an illusion?
@Ben-Dixey

Hi, the profile is naca 0012 the apparent reflex I believe is a camera illusion. However it is possible the profile isn't 100% symmetrical. It's difficult to tell by eye.

I'm new so I apologize if my question is basic. That doesn't look stiff enough to support any weight as a cantilever beam. Does the centripetal acceleration keep it straight? What formulas are used for this?
@Ben-Dixey
@Ben-Dixey 2 года назад
Hi, there is over 2 metric tonnes of centripetal force on these blades, I used the formulae F=(M x V^2)R M = mass V= tangential velocity R= radius. You can then work out the coning angle by using trigonometry and the forces outward vs downwards, there's only 1.5 degrees of blade coning as there's two rotors supporting the weight. The blades have been well tested now ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7XBsydHEl1A.html&feature=share

@Ben-Dixey
@Ben-Dixey 2 года назад
Hi, I can't remember the company but I've got the receipt and can find it if necessary. I just googled bespoke milling cutters there are lots of company's in the uk to choose from like this one for instance www.samwelltooling.co.uk/bespoke-tooling/ With a 7" chord your milling cutter will be bigger and more expensive than mine but I'm sure it will be doable. If making again I would probably choose to wrap the skin entirely round the spar and have no rivets. How far are you into the Aw95 build ?

why didn't u use flush rivets, don't think they'd be strong enough? You might be able to use a flush rivet up front too if you slide something in there as a backing bar.
@Ben-Dixey
@Ben-Dixey 2 года назад
I wanted to use flush rivets on the trailing edge but couldn't find a way of achieving it on both sides. The pop rivets on the leading edge are flush and I would have used solid type rivets if I could but again no easy way to achieve it.

Hi there , can i ask buddy , after construction and glue up and riveting all done is there still a void inside the blade ? does it matter ? or should it be filled with something ? very interesting video cheers in advance 😁😁🤘🤘
@Ben-Dixey
@Ben-Dixey 2 года назад
Hi, yes there is a void inside and as long as the ends are capped it doesn't matter in my case. If the ends are open energy will be lost due to centrifugal air pumping. The other reason a void is ok in my case is because the blades are only 4.75" chord, with the material being 0.032" thick and 2024 t3 it's strong enough to hold its shape without a filler material. I could possibly go for a thinner skin material but then would need a filler of some kind.
