I made this with salvaged angle iron and 1 1/2" tubing, 2-golf cart wheels, 8- roller blade wheels, 3-26 " bicycle rims, a motor and pulley from an old piston water pump, and bits and pieces of steel.
I had hoped to be able to build it for free, but in the end I had to buy the 1/2 inch wire mesh, pop rivets and washers to attach the screen to the rims, two 5/8" pillow blocks and a 76" v-belt.
I used a 2" pulley on the motor, then a 10" pulley, then a 2 1/2" pulley to the 26" bicycle rims. I ended up with 31RPM which seems to work perfectly.
Thanks to all the others who posted videos of their homemade compost screeners. I just copied the best ideas them.

Merrick, of all of the trommels I have seen this is by far the best. You have taken a lot of ideas and have made a hybrid that is better than the rest. My hat is off to you my friend. I wish you had made some close ups of the construction. I really like your design and would like to copy it someday. Thanks again for a great design and build.

Thanks for the video. This looks like on of the best tromels I've seen on You Tube. It looks simple, but effective, and looks easy enough to build too.

If you built that yourself, your skills and talent are pretty high. Would like to have seen some up close vid of the screen and build parts. It certainly looks like it runs well and will work for a long time.

Great to see that inplix has new instructions to save my money and energy to build it.

I would love to see some close ups of the whole assembly. Looks great and not to difficult. Good job.

Looks great, man. Though, to be safer electrically, you shouldn't be turning it on and off by plugging and unplugging the cord. You can buy a one-receptacle and switch combo, or use a power-strip. Just make sure that it's rated to carry at least the name-plate amperage on your motor (small wimpy wires get hot and melt and zap if they get over-loaded). And only use a GFCI receptacle to plug into - they've saved MY life more than once! Keep up the good work.

I have built one very similar(before I even saw this video), and I'm having some trouble getting the mesh cylinder to turn smoothly. I'm using a panel of heavy mesh and bike rims . I've rebuilt the frame due to the first one being out of square. But there is still a problem with smooth operation. I've just been turning the cylinder by hand but it's not as smooth as I would like. The motor setup is different; I'm using one with a worm drive to a 2" pulley to give the reduction I need. Something must be out of square or out of round so I'm going to work on that this weekend!

Very good design. I know you said it has a few adjustments but for the first run very impressive. I may try to reproduce (i mean steal) your idea if you don't mind.

Perhaps you'd be interested in selling packages for people to assemble. I'd be interested in buying. Don't have time to source and figure out how to build. Looks like the best sifter I've seen! Please let me know. Thanks.

Usagi agreed. I am working on gathering the components and finding the metal for the frame and a decent motor is difficult. Also, who has spare bicycle wheels to make the drum?

what is the usefullness of sifting compost
@Bowcase
@Bowcase 6 лет назад
nadjib labed Something to consider is the breakdown of materials in the soil. Once cuttings, clippings, scraps, etc., is put in the soil it starts to break down. The larger the piece the slower the process. Most of the time compost is used as a direct soil amendment and is put in the seed rows just prior to planting. This way, when the compost is screened, the compost is small enough to be more readily aboarbed, or available to the plants. The larger pieces that come out the end of the trommel can be put right back into your compost pile to continue breaking down. I hope that helps.

Drilling to fast. If you have worms in compost, they will be squeezed with this fast drilling. Reduce speed and efect wolud be same.
